Crazy. I can't believe its of so much historical importance or interest that the whole lot couldn't be demolished.

Great name for a bridge and line!!! I'm not saying this line should have (without more information) but if more lines across the Penines had been kept open we wouldn't be in such a pickle today!!! 😂😂😂

It was a very useful route from Huddersfield to Bradford, avoiding Halifax, but the huge expense of maintaining the viaducts did not justify it remaining open.

0:35 At first I thought the light Ford Escort van was being a bit of a scamp, crossing the solid line, but I think it's the parked car (Vauxhall Carlton?) that's committing the offence here

There was a bulge in one of the arches more like a hump that gradually got worse over the years as if the end of the valley was slowly moving inwards, part of the parapet wall began to fall away which is why BR decided to seek permission to demolish that end of it before the arch gave way altogether. I think it was the 4th on from the road in the last photo in line with the street light the parapet wall is a bit lighter colour and arch looks out of shape.

I've been driving under this viaduct twice a day since 1984 only ten years till I retire

How did they construct this? They must have used scaffolding. It´s a testament to old construction techniques that if built in 1870 it is still standing 150+ years later. Today´s viaducts made out of reinforced concrete only have a lifespan of 60 years. OK the pointing in the brickwork may go.

Your vid’s opening question would be funnier if it read “why does the Pickle Line end in the middle of……?”

Call me out there, but I bet that the unfriendly land owner had specials rates on the line just for that family.

Interesting but what was the point of leaving 8 arches when the rest were demolished? Does the surviving part have any function other than as a monument to a former line?

I believe it was because the ground was unstable under that part of the viaduct.

They should of bolstered up the end pillar supporting arch over road , as it looks right dodgy . A collapse waiting to happen .
