Hi Travis, the seed potatoes that you've ordered from Wood Priarrie Farms are some of my fav varieties! The Caribe is a great 1st early potato, and it'll be a little sweeter in flavor. I dig a few earlies bc we're wanting some new potatoes..then allow the remainder tubers to mature. Can't wait to see how some of the veggies produce for you bc I've thought about growing them. Nicola Potatoes have a golden inside also, with a light brown outside. I’ve mentioned them in a few of my videos and had a little patch of them this year (2021). They are a low glycemic index variety and good for folks watching their carbs. (I also borrowed your expression “It’s tater time!” I hope that’s okay.) Very well-conceived cultivar selection for flavor, yield, disease resistance and plain old gardener's curiosity. We match exactly on the five determinate beefsteaks but then I go off on a couple of Sakata Roma types plus another five Italian heirloom paste varieties. Landed cost on Toronjina is almost a buck a seed so I'll stick with Sun Gold for another year. Trialing a Polish leek "Bartek" up against Tadorna this season. Wonderful program to watch. I'm very tempted to throw down a Red Snapper challenge.

Yeah the Toronjina seed cost was tough to swallow. But my curiosity got me on that one because I wanted to see how it compared to Sun Gold. Let me know how that leek trial goes.

This will be my first year growing Kellogg's Breakfast after several people have recommended that variety. So I'll throw my hat in the #bigmater ring. I'm more of a yellow, orange, pink tomato fan, so my reds are for canning (whole, diced, sauce, soup). Melons and pumpkins will be small varieties for my smaller space. Romanesco Costata is a must in the summer squash category because it did well last year and friends have requested more for this year.

I've been growing the Cornito Giallo and Rosso, both from Johnny's, for years. Both do extremely well in the heat and humidity. You can harvest green or wait until they turn orange (Giallo) or red (Rosso). I also grew Carmen and Escamillo for several years, both full size Corno di Toro. But I prefer the Cornitos because even though they supposedly have the same days-to-maturity as the full size Corno di Toro, when grown side by side the Cornitos turned color faster for me and I like to wait until they are orange/red sweet to harvest.

I buy from Wood Prairie and have always had great success with their seed potatoes. I know you will too, especially since you spoke with them and got recommendations. Since you like Yukon Gold, you should try Prairie Blush. To me they taste similar to Yukon Gold, and in fact, I think they are a Yukon Gold hybrid/variant. In my zone 9a (FL panhandle) the Prairie Blush have been more productive than Yukon Gold every time I've planted them (both fall and spring).

For anybody out there that loves mushrooms, theirs a egg plant called Casper, its a snow white egg plant, some are long shaped and some are medium sized... But if it is sliced a quarter of a inch thick, rolled in flour and fried you would swear you was eating some kind of great tasting wild mushroom, absolutely delicious for mushroom lovers... Plants where completely disease resistant here in east Tennessee, we picked the last ones right before first frost... I noticed Baker creek has those... Great show Lazy dog... I may get in on that tomato contest, I had a Virginia sweet stripey this year that weighed 46 ounces, the year before last I had two German stripeys that both weighed 55 ounces...

I was getting worried when you kept not mentioning "Bella Rosa" this year. I trying it this year for the first time. I agree about "Sun Gold" being a fabulous tasting golden cherry tomato (and their tend to ramble - but production is high as well). Our just for fun varieties this year are the oldie "Mortgage Lifter" and the yellow "Sunny Boy". Never grown them before and wanted to give it a try. We are also going with "King Arthur" for the 3rd year, I grew "Red Knight XR3" last year and it was meh for us. I would also recommend a yellow sweet banana pepper called "Pageant" if you have not tried it before. Excellent flavor. For us, Others will be left over from last year's seed order that I have left.

I’m a native Texan from the brush country where chiltepin grows wild. They really hate being in full sun and only grow well in river bottoms, under nurse trees, or on the sides of buildings. If you’ve got partial shade somewhere, do yourself a favor and plop it down there. I also love the X3R bell pepper series. I now grow Aristotle X3R exclusively because we’ve had so much trouble with BLS. I’m sure red knight will perform well too. Last thing, if you haven’t tried Rosa Bianca eggplant yet, see if you can fit a few plants. They’ll completely change how you look at eggplant flavor and texture.

The chiltepin peppers may require you to process the seeds in a saltpetre solution to simulate going through a bird's system for them to get great germination. Johnny's is always a little pricey, but it is the only place I get my cucumber seeds anymore. Loved their Tasty Jades (though they replaced it this year with something new -- Nokya). They have really good hybrid and parthenocarpic which I love because I get so many. I also got some of the Chef's Choice Pink Hybrid from 'Seeds and Such' this year.... mostly just to see my daughter's reaction to a barbie pink tomato. Last year I grew all nonhybrid tomatoes (most I got from 'MIGardener'), except my super sweet 100s. They did really poorly, so I am moving back to more hybrid ones this year (still like indeterminate the best), though the German Johnson I grew last year was my favorite tasting tomato ever --- and I don't even normally like eating tomatoes! I don't have much space so I really need to maximize the amount I get off a single plant and the hybrids do that a lot better.

Great show Lazy dog.... I have grew the orange crisp watermelon up here in east Tennessee, it is the sweetest watermelon I've ever grew, absolutely delicious, but it was so sweet that you won't eat as much as you normally do, just unbelievably sweet.... As far as the Alibaba watermelon, I've grew it also and the texture and crispness of it is amazing, probably the best textured watermelon I've ever grew... The vines are super thick but not that long... I wouldn't have another watermelon close to them, they kinda need to make their own thick spot, about 8 foot × 8 foot circle with a 3 plant hill... But now back on orange crisp, the seeds in your pack will be really tiny and flat which will produce a very tiny seedling, they take extra care and pampering to get started, so tiny and delicate at first... cucumber beetles love them... I've grew many kinds in the last 25 year and the grand prize winner out of all varieties is orange glo, it's the only large watermelon that tastes different than watermelon, its has a more tropical taste... I've grew orange glo up to 45lbs, they are absolutely amazing if their right... People that gardens know what I mean when I say right....

No root crops like carrots, radish, beets, turnips, onions? That surprises me. Wanted to let you know that I got an extra pack of seeds in my order last year, Corinto cucumber, and was shocked at the price, too! I started 4 seeds late to have an extended crop, and they were just ok in my opinion. The fruits were beautiful, they were easy to find and pick, and customers loved them, but they didn't make a large quantity compared to the pickling cukes. Planning to seed the rest of that pack at the same time as my pickling cukes this spring and do a better comparison. Here's to a great gardening season!

Question: you chose Tendersweet Orange as the pollinator for the Orange Crisp. I got my Orange Crisp from Johnny’s today and he also included a Pollinator; ACE… I think I know why you selected the Tendersweet…maybe because it also is Orange. Looks like why ACE is Johnny’s choice for a pollinator is that it produces more flowers than typical….also it looks like the ACE grows and blooms timely with the Crisp. What do you think? BTW, Johnny’s included a page from front to back on instructions about growing seedless watermelons. Nice touch for Johnny’s. Oh, and I see Johnny’s recommends using black plastic (I use landscape fabric) underneath the plants and drip tape under the plastic…especially northern regions.. That is what I have found also that keeps any weeds or grass from growing and my watermelons do much better that way.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Ace probably does make a better pollenizer, but it's also considered a "non-harvestable" watermelon. I'd rather sacrifice a little production so I could eat my pollenizer variety. All the commercial guys around grow watermelons on plastic. I just don't have a great way to install it by hand, and our weed pressure isn't so bad that we can't do without it.

I've never grown Chef's Choice Black or Grand Marshall (growing it this year for the first time), so can't comment on those. I'm not a fan of Celebrity at all, although lots of folks swear by it. As far as the others go, lately I've been leaning towards a larger tomato and more vigorous plants. So based on that criteria, I'd go Red Snapper, Roadster, Bella Rosa. Bella Rosa may edge the other two on production throughout the life of the plant, but I like the larger tomatoes that the other two produce.
