The TCG world has weirdest consumer problems I have ever heard about that don't exists in other hobbies. I mean since I was 11 years old I knew guitar stores get in the instruments a couple hundred bucks cheaper (if they are dealers) and that once you buy a guitar you lose optimistically 45% (50% or so if you're motivated) on a foreign-made instrument being resold in NOS (new-old-stock=Mint) condition. That never made me angry it literally is the cost of doing business in the instrument market. Somehow that mindset has helped me relate to just how life-microeconomics work in that when you buy something assume you're going to lose half and everything above 50% is pretty good and anything above 85% is insane. Don't buy something if you don't want it or are entering into what I like to call The Lottery Ticket paradox where you perceive against reason that most optimistic outcome when in reality the odds are infinitesimally against you and then are angry when you don't win.

I'd be careful equivocating cards to any one industry. The parallels stop pretty quickly. Plenty of things hold value over 50 or even 85%. Further, collectibles are distinguished by their propensity to increase in value over time. That's the proposition behind paying 10-20x manufacturing cost. Those margins exist for a reason. Let's not normalize getting ripped off on products with massive markups that are marketed as collectibles.

If You buy something, You Bought it, and You become the responsible party accepting all outcomes from your actions. If you haven't shopped around or are not sure (consumer confidence) then don't buy it. It is beyond stupid to get angry at a store owner for things they can't control and even dumber if you fail to do your due diligence when probable 95% (or more, Good God) questions can be answered by a single Google search. Well, it is true card collectibility is more stabilized than say a car or guitar you have to learn to be accountable for your own actions ( and that Yes, things are principally cheaper to make then the price tag). These products typically have an listed MSRP, a fluctuating market, and most importantly RISK like everything else. Let's not normalize the lack of accountability. It is like Aristophanes said, 'Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown, ignorance can be educated, and drunkenness sobered, but stupid lasts forever.'

Problem with TCG markets is it got infected and influenced by the crypto-bro attitude. Towards the end of the 2010s, people started trying to flip cards for profits on a set-to-set basis like they were day trading stocks. Then when the 2020s hit and we all got stimulus money, a bunch of morons thought they’d get rich off TCGs. The single market spiked, ballooned way past what any card should have been worth, and now for the last couple years we’ve seen a brutal market correction. The dunces who keep getting mad over stuff think they’re still going to get rich on booster boxes.

Only 2 things get me mad in tcg. Obvious price gouging of consumers such as in yugioh, where they KNOW what’s going to be meta, and even ban ways to counter it in some cases to sell. And 2: people who will talk about how skilled they are to pay the $1200 for the deck that turn 1, through interruptions, builds 3 2800+ attacks, voids 9 of your 10 play zones, and forces a macro cosmos effect on field. Like…you memorized the pattern I saw the last 3 games the other people do. Sigh* love the game but man hate some of the decisions behind it, or elitism.

so... i think i've mentioned that the interest in the next few mtg sets are going to be in limited draft and sealed play because the cards and mechanics are mostly new. last year was all reprints so players were buying boxes to get cards they didn't have before, or for people to resell more sought after cards. lgs who are trying to maintain or improve wpn rating to get better deals are going to push sealed deck and draft events because it gets people in stores to buy more product. i think a lot of lgs that have shut down should partner up with other shut down store owners and put together the capital they need to buy or lease a location and get back up and running. everything seems very positive moving forward. the amalgamation to play boosters, the flourishing of other tcgs, the popularity of other games like warhammer. the money is out there.

Manor singles are crashing because set is hyper focused on clues and mechanics that don’t work on a competitive level outside of standard. These last two sets should really help increase popularity of the fall out set. All the original ideas, popular IP and commander focus cards will be great

More math than you think. There’s deals with the print people too. Different types of print can sometimes even require different machines. This not to mention quantity of rares and such. And prices may be lower, but that could lead to a cut in margin also.
