Could it be possible that the pursuit of a pro-social purpose also happens to be the best way to generate profit over the long term? Alex Edmans will show us why there is a business and financial case for purpose, not just a moral and ethical case. Alex Edmans is Professor of Finance at London Business School. He also serves as Mercers School Memorial Professor of Business at Gresham College.
Alex has a PhD from MIT as a Fulbright Scholar, and was previously a tenured professor at Wharton and an investment banker at Morgan Stanley.
He has spoken at the World Economic Forum in Davos, testified in the UK Parliament, and given the TED talk “What to Trust in a Post-Truth World” and the TEDx talk “The Social Responsibility of Business” with a combined 2.4 million views.
Alex’s book, “Grow the Pie: How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit”, was featured in the Financial Times list of Business Books of the Year for 2020. Alex has won 23 teaching awards at Wharton and LBS, and was named Professor of the Year by Poets & Quants in 2021. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This talk is super insightful - thanks Alex! What I admire most about Alex's talk is that he doesn't rely on one-off anecdotes to substantiate his pie-growing idea. Instead, Alex does a deep dive into long-term, historical data, controlling for outliers and identifying the overarching trends. As such, it's clear that Alex doesn't simply put forward opinions but well-reasoned arguments informed by data. If the pie-growing mentality appeals to you, I recommend reading his book "Grow the Pie: How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit" - it's a gold mine of insights!

Thanks for the talk! But I have a few questions. Why are we still talking about growth in a world that has already reached tipping points due to growth? Where in this pie is the environment? I only see shareholders and society, or put differently, where are we taking the resources from to grow our society and please shareholders in a limited world? Redistribution would also be a much quicker way to make the cake grow for the majority of society. I stand with Piketty on this one.
