The Pietta ACE with a .45 Colt Conversion Cylinder
Experimenting with a conversion cylinder in my Piettta ACE revolver.
Results were (mostly) positive. Still have some tweaking that may have to be done, but for the most part I'm reasonably happy with the way it performed.
Some of the scenes in this video have more lens flare than a J.J. Abrams movie, so fair warning!

So I absolutely have to take some time to give you a compliment. You have a rare ability to not only refrain from flinching, and seem to never blink. Very great attribute to precision shooting. As for the performance of the revolver is something I have witnessed multiple times. Though I have never owned the ace itself I have customized several Remingtons over the years. My collection of 6 remingtons of various setups indicates my love and trust for this revolver. I have depended on them and was let down with them when I failed. Memories of a whitetail hunt where I found the the bullet impact in the center of a snow top stump instead of behind the white patch of a extended foreleg. The year 1977.

I think these things really come into their own with the conversion cylinders - almost like they were designed for them. I also have a .45ACP cylinder for it, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I'm sure it will work pretty well!

Hope this finds you in good health. I just got to drop you a quick note about my excitement about a completed quest. After many years of trying I have added the last desired cap n ball Remington to my collection. New in the box for years just sitting in someone's basement, a steel frame 12" model. Its gotta be on a next year deer hunt. I'm definitely going to reinvest in a chrono now, especially with the new bullets I'm trying and now 4 more inches too.

You might be able to correct the revolver's tendency to shoot left of the POA by chucking the barrel up snugly in a vise and twisting the frame just a skosh. I had to have a gunsmith do that with a Ruger Vaquero I used to own that shot left all the time. The little bit of correction that the 'smith dialed in worked wonders - brought the POA/POI into exact alignment. I'm trying to get my hands on a conversion cylinder for my Pietta 1860 Army clone. So far, no luck. Nice video. I really like the retro snubbie look of your Ace. Cheers.

Thanks again dude, I'm really loving your videos on this gun. You should be on Pietta's payroll, as you've completely sold me on buying one of these! Thank you again, your videos have been extremely helpful in helping me decide whether this is the gun for me (other than when I got one look at it and thought 'i need this in my life ASAP lol). The chronograph tests have been the most helpful I'd say, and seeing how well it works with a conversion cylinder is amazing as well. Did you have to do any fitting or timing adjustments, or did it just drop in without any issue? Lastly, the accuracy test was helpful in knowing that it shoots pretty low, so I'd need to know to aim higher than I would normally to hit what I want to. Although since I use heavier conical bullets, it might hit straight, or in some different way, so either way I'll need to test it for myself first before trying to seriously use it. Anyway, I'm extremely thankful for these videos about this gun, I really appreciate the time and effort put into making these. Thank you again for helping me make my decision to buy this beautiful revolver. I'm stuck on whether I want the smooth grips or the checkered. All my 19th century double action cartridge revolvers have checkered grips, so I might go with that, but then again I do like the smooth grips as well, and it'd be a little bit cheaper... I like your choice of getting the Pearl looking grips, but I always prefer wood or black rubber personally. Maybe one day I'll get a gun with those type of pearl/ivory looking grips, or maybe even real ivory on an antique gun, if i come into a bunch of money some day lol! Have a great morning! You're welcome! I'm glad you like the videos! I have a few conversion cylinders for different revolvers. Every one for the Colt style revolvers need some work to make them function. With the Remingtons - Pietta anyway - generally have dropped right in and work without issue.

I currently have a Pietta Colt 1860 Army with a 3" barred, fluted cylinder, and the grip from the 1870s double action 'Thunderer" revolvers, (they didn't give it a cool name like 'The Ace', they just called it the 'Snubnose version' basically lol) which I love, but when I tried to buy a conversion cylinder for it, I found out that they discontinued the Pietta Colt .44 (Army or Navy Models) due to the unreliability of the guns that they'd be put in. Their customer service rep and I had a good conversation, and she mentioned how nearly every single customer who bought one had issues and either returned it, or had to do more fitting than would be expected, or had to send in their gun with their cylinder and pay for it to be professionally mated with the gun. So based on that, they decided to discontinue them all together. I'm tot too disappointed as I mainly bought it for cap and ball usage, not cartridge usage, and I figure if I want to use cartridges, I can use paper cartridges hahaha. But I do want to have a gun that can shoot .45LC and cap and ball, so once I get this Ace from Pietta, at least I will have one that can do both. I found out Taylor's is out of stock, so I did a back order. I found some places that I could buy it now if I wanted, but not only do I not have enough money yet to do so, these other places all sell AS-IS only. I heard something about Pietta guns having some built in 1 year factory warranty or something, but I couldn't find anything about that on their website. I couldn't even find any info or listing of their new 2021 model, 'The Ace', on their website! Looks like it hasn't been updated in a year or two I'd guess lol. But I believe Taylor's has a good warranty system and isn't too pricey $348 for the checkered grip version I want to buy, and $330ish, I think $335 or so, for the smooth grip option. I'm just curious as to where you got yours if you got it online?

@@brian8152 I got mine online from Taylor's when they first came out a few months ago. That is very interesting what the customer service rep told you, and from messing around with a couple Colt conversions I'm not surprised so many have had problems with them. They certainly don't seem to work as smoothly as the ones made for the Remingtons. Not to mention, the process to remove the cylinder for loading is so much easier on the Remington than it is on the Colt. If you do end up getting one of the Aces, I'm sure you will like it. I'm having a blast with mine!

I was checking the Krist Converter website, and noticed that their .22 conversions for the 1858 can be had with only a 2" barrel. It should work with this revolver no problem. Unfortunately they are out of stock at this time, but when they are available again I think I'll pick one up!

I got one you ought to review (if you haven't already) Bond arms makes a lower budget version of their .45/.410 derringers (the Rowdy) that seems to be well reviewed. The rowdy runs only about 280 bucks. I'm going to hand load .45 bullets and BP into a .410 brass hull (fire formed from .303) to shoot in mine

Seems my Ace shoots left also, I drifted the sight left and now hit center of mass. Today I will shoot the Army model and see if it shoots better then the ace. Are you using a wad?

No, no wads. The primary reason it was shooting to the left that day was because it was late in the day and the sun was low to my left, causing a glare on the left of the front sight and making the front sight appear to be more to the right than it really was. That made me hold the front sight too far left and, thus, shoot left. I tried it out another day when the light was better and it was much more centered.

With my 8 inch barreled Uberti 1858 new model army revolver using my Howell .45 colt cartridge conversion cylinder shooting HSM .45 colt 200 grain cowboy loads I tend to hit high by up to 8 inches at about 15 yards and to the left by up to 6 inches although sometimes I hit point of aim. One of the drawbacks of conversion cylinders - a lot of times you'll find they print quite high. I don't know if Pietta puts a taller front sight on the ACE compared to the 8" revolvers, but as you can see it hits pretty close to point of aim with the conversion cylinder. But I've tried a conversion in my 8" Uberti and was getting the same results that you did - it was hitting a good 8 -10" high from that revolver. It sucks to spend that kind of money on a conversion cylinder only to find that it hits WAY off out of your revolver. After playing around with these for a little while now, I think a good guideline is that, regardless of which revolver you have, you can expect most loads out of a conversion cylinder to print 6 - 10" higher that what you get from the round ball loads from your percussion cylinder. So, if your revolver shoots about 6" low from point of aim with the cap and ball loads, it should be pretty close to pint of aim with a conversion cylinder. Conversely, if your revolver shoots point of aim/point of impact with cap and ball loads, it is almost guaranteed to shoot high by half a foot or more with a conversion cylinder.

With Remington style repros I tend to hit a few inches low and favor the left by a few inches with cap and ball loads so with cartridge conversion often I hit about 4 to 8 inches high though sometimes I hit point of aim but often I hit more to the left of point of aim but not as high

I use 2F because it is bulkier and fills the case better with lighter charges. You could probably go up a grain or two from 25 with 3F and see how well it fills the case. Black powder needs a little bit of compression for best results.

It wouldn't be my first choice as a primary self defense pistol, but if it is all you have then it will most certainly get the job done! Big, heavy, slow bullets have been stopping fights for a long time. Getting walloped by one of those big bullets usually makes a bad guy second guess his intentions!

Only issue with these are cap jams. If your first shot jams? You’re going to get rushed lol. I have yet to fire all 6 chambers without some kind of issue. But I also have the shitty brass frame. So go steel when buying.

I just purchased the ACE revolver from Pietta last night and will be getting the conversion cylinder also... I just need to pick out a good two color combination for getting the gun cerekoted... you should do it too... I already own an Uberti stainless sheriffs model but am hoping the cerekote will help with corosion like the stainless does??? Love the videos... are you gonna try to file down your sight???? I'm not going to file down the sight just yet - I'm going to play around with a few more loads and see if I can find something I really like and go from there. If I do file, I probably won't have to take too much off. It seems to be shooting pretty close to where I want it with the .45 Colt loads - just needs a little more tweaking. Cerekoting this sounds like an interesting idea. If you get it done, I'd like to see how it turns out.

This Cylinder will work in mostly any other .44 caliber Pietta 1858, but it will not work in another brand 1858, like a Uberti for instance. They will not swap out between brands - if you have a Pietta you need to get one made for the Pietta. If you have an Uberti you need to get one made for Uberti. Hope this answers your question.

The only thing about them is that, to use them most effectively, you need to cut away a little bit of the recoil shield on the revolvers frame. I'm not sure if I am brave enough to do that!

That Hornady bullet is likely .452. You need .454 bullets.

According to Hornady, these bullets are .454" diameter. Interestingly the 250gr I was using with the Schofield load are .452" and seemed to shoot better! Could be this revolver just doesn't like the Hornady bullets as much!

I'm pretty sure the reason it was hitting a bit to the left that day was because the sun was pretty low to my left, causing glare on the sight on that side and washing it out, making me think the sight was centered in the notch when it really wasn't. The one that I used here is made by Howell Arms. The Krist uses a slightly different system, in that the back plate doesn't rotate with the rest of the cylinder, and uses only a single firing pin.

Certainly, no offense taken. I've tried several different methods, and I have not seen any difference in how the gun shoots in relation to how I place my finger on the trigger. Analyzing this later, I realized that the left hits were primarily because I was shooting this late in the day, with the light low to my left which caused a glare on the left side of the front sight blade. This made it look like the front sight was centered, but I was actually holding off to the left a little bit. Shooting this on an overcast day when I could see the sights better the group was much more centered. Still slightly low, but that can be fixed by filing down the front sight a touch.

check trigger control a right hander using the 2nd joint of the finger on the trigger tends to pull a bit to the left & low, try using only the middle part of the first finger joint, feels weird at first but go thru a few cylinders this way.

It is. I think the blackpowder loads actually felt like they had a bit more recoil than the smokeless load, even though I was using a slightly heavier bullet in the smokeless. I think either one will do a number on anything you decide to shoot with it!

@@adameve8026 No. I choreographed the. 45 Schofield out of an 8" barrel with 25gr of black powder and was getting 706 fps. So with a 250gr bullet that works out to roughly 275 ft/lbs of energy. I was getting 858 fps with 30gr of black powder and a 140gr round ball, so that works out to only about 230 ft/lbs of energy. So the cartridge loads with their heavier bullets are capable of producing much more energy than a round ball load.

Have the same snapcaps. Be careful of using them too much. Every single firing pin on my 1858 Taylor’s and co conversion cylinder cracked on the top in multiple spots from dry fire practice with those after about 4 months. Luckily the pins were cheap and easy to replace but still very disappointing. I know it can’t be the ammo I shoot cause I only shoot HSM cowboy action 200 or 250 grain lead flat nose ammo so that should be rated just perfect for the gun. Between 850-900 fps

The cylinder made for the Uberti will not work in the Pietta. Too many dimensional size differences between the two.

Well, it depends. I haven't been able to get very good accuracy out of it with many of the round ball/black powder loads I've put through it. On the other hand, I've gotten pretty good accuracy out of it with cartridge conversion cylinders, both with .45 Colt and .45 ACP cylinders. This revolver works so much better with the conversion cylinders that I've pretty much dedicated this revolver to cartridge conversions.

I have planned to buy this 3.5-inch Pietta black ace with of course the conversion cylinder but the price with the cylinder is pretty much expensive (more than $ 600) so I am trying to know everything through your KZbin videos. I have a 5.5 inch Sherif model but not well concealable. @@johnzx6r

John, I did not hear the amount of Win231 powder you loaded under the lead in your 45 Colt ammo you were shooting in this Pietta Ace shooting video (I do recall you mentioning in another video that you didn’t like to give that out). I also noticed what I would call an “aberration” in your shooting that could contribute to the low and left of your aim (although I suspect that if you have watched your video you have already noticed it too). I have loaded a lot of other caliber hand-loads with Win231, but never in black powder configurations, and I feel I generally know Win231 very well). Tom KC3QAC

I don't like to mention the powder charges I use for a couple of reasons. The first is I don't want some knucklehead blowing up their revolver because they misunderstood something I said, and end up dumping far more powder in their load that what I said I used in mine. The second is that KZbin already is, shall we say, unkind to videos that show the reloading process, so I don't want them coming after me for violating their arbitrary rules. What I will say is that the load I used in this video is a starting load from the Hornady manual for their 255gr Cowboy bullet, which is the bullet I used here. So if you have the latest Hornady manual, you will see the load I used. As far as my shot placement goes, this revolver just hits low with just about everything. It is closer to point of aim with a heavier bullet, but still low. As for hitting to the left, i didn't think about it at the time, but when I was filming this it was late in the afternoon and the sun was low and to my left, which was causing a glare on the front sight and caused me to misjudge the front sight placement in the rear notch. Later outings with this revolver and loads in better light had the groups nicely centered (but still a bit low).

I bought the Taylor’s and company conversion cylinder for my 1858 ace. Has anyone had any issues with that cylinder? Should I of went with Howell?

I have a Taylor's conversion cylinder for the Uberti 1858, and it works just fine. I think the Howell's I own have been maybe slightly better finished than the Taylor's. My first Taylor's I sent back because the bluing was very splotchy and not nice at all. The second one was better, but still not as good as the Howell's I have. Maybe Taylor's just had a bad batch of bluing when mine were made. The Taylor's works perfectly, so other than the finish on the samples I had, I don't think there is much difference between the Taylors and the Howells.

Generally more recoil raises point of impact. Too much power and you stretch the frame.

I'm pretty sure the reason it was shooting a bit tot he left was because of the light. The sun was pretty low to my left, and was causing a bit of a glare on the front sight on that side. I'm really liking these things - a matched pair would be pretty cool!

I have the regular pietta 1858 are you burying the front sight all the way down in the slot of the rear sight? I was doing that at first and then I started letting the front sight match the radius of the curve of the rear sight another word besides of a site in the back forms a curve I left the top of the front sight complete the curve if that makes any sense shoots dead on now

It's not preferable since it covers the target but have you considered trying a 12 o'clock hold?

Yes, any .44 Pietta 1858 cylinder made within the last few years or so should work without issue.

Oh - it takes practice! I still have to catch myself from anticipating the shot every now and again. It's not an easy skill to master.

The shame about this one, is it looks like it's missing the safety notches of the factory cylinder that let you safely carry with 6. I suppose a machine shop could do them for a guy, but i'm surprised they left them off.

It's difficult to see in the video, but this cylinder has one extra bolt stop notch machined into it. The idea is to put the revolver on half cock, line up this extra bolt stop notch with the bolt stop, and then lower the hammer down. This will raise the bolt stop back up and will seat in the extra bolt stop notch and at this position the hammer will be between two chambers. the bolt stop will prevent the cylinder from rotating and the hammer from hitting a firing pin. This will let you carry it with all chambers loaded.

I'd say it is probably closest to the S&W "N" frame in size, but it would probably be best, if you are able, to test fit this in a holster before you buy it.

The term seems to be pretty interchangeable between low powered, lead bullet ammunition and down loading a single action revolver for carrying safely.

@John Doe The .45 Colt is a fantastic cartridge. Even loaded down a bit to be safe in these revolvers I'm sure being hit by one of those big 250gr bullets is guaranteed to ruin someone's day.

He is talking more about current lead bullet loads for Cowboy Action Shooting. When I shots those matches , in 45 Colt I loaded a 250 gr cast bullet at around 725-750 fps depending on barrel length

Still here, just having a bit of difficulty getting out to the range this time of year. These pistols seem to be an acquired taste - seems a lot of people find them a bit homely! I certainly like mine and have been having a good time messing around with it.

I called Taylor's today and they have like 30 something of the white PVC grips versions in stock, but none of the smooth grips nor checkered grips in stock. I put in a backorder for the checkered grips, as I imagine by the time I save up the bit more money I need to buy it, I will finally get contacted by them saying it's ready. I have a few other sources to get them but I feel they wouldn't have the same warranty/customer support if there's any problems at first, and when I got my Pietta 1860 snub nose, there was problems lol. The bolt (cylinder stop) would remain up on half cock, which gouged a line around the cylinder's circumference. EMF, the company I bought it from though, sent a new hammer which I installed and the issue was fixed thankfully... I spent a few bucks on a replacement bolt in case that was the issue, but it wasn't. Just today I called after having forgot for so long, about getting a new cylinder, considering mine had the bluing gouged with a white line going around the circumference of the cylinder, and they said they'd contact Pietta and see what they can do. Hopefully I can get a new one, and hopefully I can keep the old one, as it's unlikely they could even sell it (well, maybe they could at a heavy discount lol).

brian, the website shows all but the black in stock.but you called so they told you.i got a checkered a few months back.it feels nice and anchored in the hand.iv had major troubles getting parts and peices from taylors.the whole gun,no problems.yeah john,people on some forums talk about how it looks like a webly.i was going to chop down one of my NMAs when your first ace video came up.midway sells a retaining pin for it.i like them.im considering doing one in one of my stainless NMAs.midway has a ss pin.but I'm seeking a custom gun smith.no way am I going at a $500+ gun with my hacksaw and files.😐

Good video, it looks like you have the Howell Old West Conversions 1858 Remington Cylinder Pin Quick Release. Did you have to do any fitting for it to fit and work properly?

The Pietta ACE comes with that part already factory installed. I don't see any tool or file marks on it, so I assume Pietta doesn't have to do any modification to it to make it work.

Are the conversion cylinder firing pins supposed to be spring loaded or do they just sit on the round until fired and kind of free float when the cylinder is empty

They are not spring loaded. They are just free floated, and will rest against the primer of the round when the cylinder is loaded. Even though they are resting against a live primer, I think it would be an incredibly freak accident for one to go off other than being hit by the revolver hammer.

@@jonathongreyburgett2824 That depends. There are more factory ammo choices that are suitable for these conversion cylinders in .45 Colt than there are for the ,45 ACP. If you handload it isn't a big deal, but if you do not you will have more choices in factory ammo in .45 Colt. Also, the .45 ACP cylinders are only available in 5 shot, while the .45 Colt you can get in 6 shot, if that is important to you.

Wow that little pistol has a lot of recoil. I would have stuck with the smokeless powder and filled don’t the front sight.

Seems like too big of a load for such a small package. The recoil is took much and accuracy suffers. Would be better as a cowboy .38 chambered gun
