The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Great book about building a Cathedral and the Town of Kingsbridge. A wonderfully crafted group of characters who jump off the page. Hope you check it out.

You make me want to re-read this book and re-read the second one (and then read the third one)! I love so many of the characters, and yes I hate the villain. I thought the building process of the church was so interesting to read about and I loved reading about Tom Builder. I also really liked Philip's perspective about how things went in the monastery.
@Rajathon
@Rajathon 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the way Phillip attacks problems with hard work and determination makes me feel like I could accomplish anything with that attitude.

Good review. I am currently reading the book, although I've seen the tv adaption before, so I have an inkling as to what will happen. So far it's a little depressive, but honestly I shoulda known that since apparantly the author usually writes crime novels

I read it years ago before I had really become more of a reader and it made no sense that I would read this because I wasn't into historical fiction at all, Cathedrals, etc... I think the only appeal was that it was recommended and that I was craving a 1000+ page book. I was really blown away and loved it, and somehow it even made me excited and curious about architecture.. nice review

I haven’t played it but there is a board game based on this book that is pretty well liked if you wanted to check that out! Glad this still stood up for you on a re-read, I don’t read a lot of historical fiction but one of my favorites is Pachinko, that one was such a fun surprise.

It's amazing when you see something come together. When I see a system I drew in AutoCAD get installed and built at a site, I feel a huge sense of gratification. People will rely on that system for years to come. And when it does come time to upgrade it, because things wear out and break eventually, some poor soul is going to look at my drawings one day, see my name, and wonder what on earth I was thinking about when I made one design decision or another, ha.

The 973 pages is worth it. My favorite epic novel of all time. It's a universal story. Anybody can relate to any main character because it puts to light the darker aspects/thoughts that even the most "enlightened" people have. The struggle and compromise the characters go through are still relevant to date. I could go on for hours but this is all I have to say.
@Rajathon

Yeah I have read this multiple times and you can always get something new out of it. The characters feel very real.
