Pillars of the Earth is a great gateway for fantasy readers to explore historical fiction (it was for me!). So glad that you loved this book - it's a remarkable read and a top 10 of all time for me. I hope many of your viewers pick this up based on your recommendation!

This was a foundational book for me as I read it twice back in the early 90s, not long after it first came out. I have always loved Gothic cathedrals, so that was the initial selling point, but I also found myself engrossed in the story. I'm glad you loved it, Petrik!

Glad you liked it! This is how I’d rank the books. 1. World without End (I think this is my favorite over Pillars is because while the protagonists undergo huge trials and struggles I wasn’t stressed out all the time for them as I was in the first book and that made it more enjoyable for me personally) 2. Pillars of the Earth (A very close second) 3. The Evening and the Morning (I really enjoyed seeing the humble beginnings of the town and the start of everything) 4. A Column of Fire (A far cry from the first three but I still finished it and enjoyed some parts) 5. The Armor of Light (this one was actually a DNF and I lost interest after a couple of hundred pages) 5.

😁 I hope so, too! Memory, Sorrow and Thorn (a four-book trilogy) are well worth the effort. As an avid fantasy reader for around fifty years, I was there when a good number of today's "classics" were first hitting the shelves. Some were absolute life changers, for me. And I've read some time and again, over those years. Enjoy!!! 😁

I don't know why but one of the things I cannot forget about the novel is the building of bridges. LOL Every time I see an old bridge, I wonder what the foundation looks like, what the foundation at the bed of the river looks like. I was young when I read this novel, I think I need to re-read it in my current age.

This is one of my favourite books. Reading it did not feel like _reading_ it, but rather like I was _there_ when it happened and saw it happening. (I think I mentioned this in one of your earlier videos.) It's odd how fast it was to read after I had avoided it because of its length for quite a long time. (In fact, Daniel Green's positive review made me read it.) I have not yet read the sequels, but I have planned to do so after noticing that the Finnish translation of the latest volume just came out a couple of months ago.

I loved it so much I read it twice, in the 90s and few years ago. I think I actually read all of the Kingsbridge books and the second best is for sure imo World without End. It would be a masterpiece, if it wasn't for the Pillars of the Earth; because they are kinda similar, so I think it comes down to 1) which one you read first (the books can be read independently, no problem) and 2) which characters your prefer. Well, I read POTE first and I think I also prefer its characters

The Kingsbridge series is really one of the best series I've ever read. I bought the first one thinking it was fantasy but it was historical fiction, the author is really a master at making a compelling plot with characters you care about and want to see succeed. The villains are all so delightfully hateful and I love to hate them, their inevitable defeat is always so satisfying. Currently reading the armor of light.

A perfect choice to get another 5 star read for the year! This is my second favorite book of all time, only slightly edged by Kingsbridge 2 - A World Without End. I would be shocked if WWE isn't another 5 star read for you. Save that for when you feel like returning to Kingsbridge - there is no compelling reason to read it closely to Pillars.

the edge of the Century trilogy is outstanding too I am near the end of the second book. Follett is a great writer though I suspect if he was writing smaller books he may have more readers. This is one of those books everyone hypes up so much that I question my own reading experience. For me, it was just a lot of trite melodrama which felt like it was trying to manipulate me into caring about characters that were relatively generic. Yes, flawed characters, but they didn't have a lot of depth, and I just felt annoyed at the heavy-handedness of it all.
