More (or less, depending on who you are) fact: They (or at least many other countries, I'd assume Chzechia isn't a standout here) do so because Alexander Graham Bell, the owner of the cellphone, wanted "Ahoy!" to be the standard answer when answering the phone, and ideally in general. It was just his personal preference, and unfortunately in most of the world, he didn't get his way. We really do live in the darkest timeline

Another thing to mention about Pirate parties (and the Czech one particularly) is that they have very ambitious climate goals on par with Green parties, but are pro-science enough to be pro-nuclear power (unlike the Greens).

@elwinowen5469
@elwinowen5469 3 жыл бұрын
@@LuisAldamiz Nuclear is among the least environmentally destructive energy sources (better than solar at the very least). Building solar panels require certain rare metals and involve industrial processes that are extremely polluting. The dangers from nuclear energy are overblown and can be solved through safer designs (such as exist in Canada), and the storage issue is minor since the volume of waste produced is little and the strongest radioactive elements decay after a few years. In short, we need to use any way we can to lower carbon emissions. Green activists in many countries have led to nuclear power being replaced with coal or natural gas, which kill several orders of magnitude more people per energy produced than nuclear, and produce tons of carbon emissions while nuclear produces none.
@linusholmstrom876
@linusholmstrom876 3 жыл бұрын
@@LuisAldamiz As far as I understand it and please anyone who knows better correct me, it is not that we can't create enough energy with renewables it is that most of them are unstable sources. The power grid needs to be more or less perfectly balanced at all times, ie the same amount of energy that is produced has to be consumed. If there is too much energy in the grid stuff breaks, too little the lights go out. the trouble with wind and solar is that the amount of energy produced changes a lot and that change is be hard to predict. So something that is reliable and easily controllable is needed to supplement wind and solar. The only two energy sources that fulfill that requirement and are carbon neutral, are hydro and nuclear. And sadly there is far too little hydro, or its way too disruptive to the local eco system. So the only viable technology that is available NOW to make our energy production carbon neutral is nuclear. All the other options, like fusion and better battery technology are decades out.

Yes, it's sensible, but the problem is that it offends the capitalist class. You can see this with right-to-repair in the US. Hilariously high public support in a country otherwise utterly fucked by culture war politics. No politician is willing to touch it - specifically because they don't want to be the first to go on the record as supporting something considered "fringe" and getting attacked by their colleagues and donors for it. This isn't a nebulous conspiracy or anything - it's a matter of fact as to how economics structures politics. It's analogous to the "resource curse" that causes petrostates to form.

I agree and I think major reforms of copyright and patent laws are needed as the rules we have mostly seems to serve the rich elites. 10 years for both doesn't seem like a bad idea with the exception of some things that have a massive investment which could take longer than 10 years to get their money back and make a profit on it but in most cases, it's usually less than 10 years.

If you want he progress you have to fight against patent. Patent is a tool to stop the progress so that inventor (or his representations) can reap the benefits while stiffling the progress. Why after brothers Wrights invention US plane innovation plummeted while Europe's rose? Its because US inventors had to respect Wrights patients while Europe did not give a shit about it. The result was that at the start of WW1 US was still in stone age in terms of aviation compared to the Europe.

4:08 A little explanation of the context in this clip: 4:11 "Čapí Hnízdo" is the name of one of the alleged subsidy scams of Andrej Babiš (Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and Chairman of the ANO political movement). 4:12 "Prototože my jsme ti hlídací psi" translates as "Because we are the watchdogs", meaning that they are trying to make sure that there is no corruption in the Czech government, aimed mainly at the aforementioned Andrej Babiš. 4:14 "Pusťte nás na ně!" = "Let us at them!" "OKD" on the door is the name of one of the biggest financial scandals of our time. More info: (unfortunately only in Czech, but I believe the translator will help) 4:18 Lyrics of the song, in quotation marks is possible context: They blackmailed with impunity, transferred for free, then got angry that people cheated them. (He's aiming at the subsidy scams of the leader of the ANO movement) In paradise the walls open, out comes the gorilla to edit the truth and kill yours. ("Gorrila" is used in the Czech language as, for example, a simile for a powerful person who interferes a lot in things she is not supposed to interfere in) We're not a dragon, we're not a dragon, we're not a sled so let us on. (dragon here means evil dragon) Not everything was easy to translate, so I tried to explain it sometimes (for example, "saně" translates translator as sledge, but dragon is more accurate because saně is a homonym)

This is great! The issue of copyright is often overlooked, but it actually has a huge effect on our creation of art. Huge media corporations control the most culturally relevant pieces of media and instead of allowing us to create huge corroborative pieces of art we end up with the same media being repackaged and sold to us again and again in order to conserve the copyright. Sometimes companies will buy licensing rights to media and then bury it making it impossible to produce anything regarding the piece, effectively killing it. It just allows for the further consolidation of entertainment mega corps (of which Disney is the worst) allowing them to propagate their own propaganda in huge volumes with consumers unable to ignore it.

I really wouldn't say that pirates are too far left from the center. They are basically much like the other center or right-center parties, but they attach the word "digital" after everything. The right-center party would say "We will ensure more houses are being built" and the Czech Pirate Party would say "We will ensure more houses are being built by digitization of the government processes and establishing a simplified e-government website for citizens". They don't have any socialist talking points whatsoever, I consider them to be more of a center-right party. Full disclosure: I support them financially and will vote for them, because there's no viable alternative, they are the least terrible party. (But still pretty terrible).

As a Czech Young voter, I can say there is a lot of information missing about Czech Pirate Party (CPP). Their decline was caused by varios scandals regarding their members promoting censorship on internet, enormous taxation on wealthy people (new 23% tax), solving housing crisis by limiting living space to 30m2 per person and taxating anything above it and many others. CPP has shifted to the left and are no longer a center party, but left to far-left party. In Czech Republic by some newspapers they have been named as the communists of internet era. Well as I wrote somewhere else in this comment section, the other parties have similar if not greater inner struggles. But those happen outside of the public scrutiny. A lot of commentators had even said it outright in 2012-2015 that the Pirate problem isn't the struggles, but the fact that they happen publicly. The other side of that coin is that the "standard" parties make decisions for internal reason but the public doesn't know why. There is no logical reason for people like Anja Karliczek or Andy Scheuer to be ministers of anything but their assignments are part of careful balancing inside the CDU/CSU. That's good for the party and its image, but pretty horrific for the actual functioning of the state. But it its what the german voter prefers. Just look at how everyone was stoked on Annalena Baerbock even though there was 0 transparency in her Spitzenkandidatin assignment as opposed to the CDU/CSU.

Also worth mentioning is that Czechia had most Covid-related death per Capita in Europe (including Russia) under Babiš and his goverment (mostly yes men from his company). This is what was responsible for the huge upsoar of opposition parties. Why did that get reversed? Well, people simply chose to forget Covid and it's victims (some 30+ thousand). the population wants to pretend it never happened, which is why there are currently no plans on how to deal with the new mutations. And voting for Babiš is a part of trying to get the good old pre-pandemic times back. It makes 0 sense, but it works emotionally.

Can anyone else here remember when the EU parliament voted to ban software patents and the EU commission immediately went into overdrive to squash the decision? Well, if we get enough pirates in the EU parliament we could expect more than just banning software patents! And about time too.

If only the EU parliament could suggest legislation. Only the council and the commission, neither of which are elected, can do that. (And people's initiatives if they get at a million subcribers. Have you heard of any? (If you have, it was probably the one about saving the bees.)) At least the parliament is allowed to veto proposed legislation. Thanks to them, we have no software patents in Europe, and no patents on genetic code, numbers, theorems, and business models either. (Numbers can still be copyrighted though.)

Nicely explained (y), thanks! A wee insight from a Czech voter: it'd seem the main reason for the sudden and steady decline in the popularity of the PIRSTAN (Pirates & Mayors/independents) coalition is the mudslinging by the ANO party, further reinforced by President as well as other parties, namely SPD (right-wing extreme) who spread downright lies that people just buy. The reason behind the rise of the Pirates seen back in 2017 was that they'd set on a mission to fight corruption that plagues the country. The short promotional clip we've seen in this video shows a bus with pictures of different politicians known for their corruption affairs, with Babis being the most visible one as he's been accused of being in a conflict of interest (and has been investigated by EU's OLAF).

Fun fact, in the Czech Republic, the Pirate party's votes passed a law that allows the Police to seize any computer (or rather ANY digital system of ANY size) that may contain an evidence in a criminal investigation without a court approval. The owner is then required to upkeep said computer. If the owner fails to do so and something (anything) happens to the computer, the owner will be prosecuted.

Weve already done something like that in Canada. Pirating music and movies is legal, provided you don't in any way monetize it, as its considered equivalent to recording the radio or TV. If you monetize it, like say a YT video, even if YOU dont get the money, its monetized and you are in trouble. But, if its just goes on your device for your own listening or viewing, its legal here, as its equivalent to it being on the radio. Mabee you should approach it like that.

Ok but what if you managed to pirate something and add or remove something to make it different? The issue isnt just straight up piracy, the issue lies in what you can do with the content. Many would argue that creating some sort of remix from your audio recordings from a radio is enough to warrant you your own patent to that thing since you took old stuff and made something new. Yet law wont allow that for most of the cases because patent holders argue that thats making profit off of their content. THAT is the real issue. Its not that you keep it for ypurself for private use, its that you cant create & publish stuff made from already existing scraps.

I've actually studied the political structure of pirates and they were quiet egalitarian and democratic. In the Barbary States and the Caribbean where the economy was maritime-based, Pirate Captains would get to vote on policy, and in the Caribbean the crews got to vote for the Captain.

What is, from my perspective as a czech citizen, most appealing about the Pirate party in the Czech repubilc is their transparency and the amount of young enthusiastic people unspoiled by the politics of 90s, which were quite crazy and it was easy to get "dirty" back then. Other parties have been linked to scandals and are still until today backed by some shady people pushing their interests. Pirates do not carry this burden. So for me its mainly the mindset, scientific approach to solving problems and hope that they wont turn the same (corruped), as the former renowned parties.

@@aol8166 I believe he said something like he can imagine islamic culture in europe/czech republic. However, in the recent past, he altered the opinion as the unmanaged immigration and related problems is and will be the topic and a potential problem for the whole Europe. So he said something like that the immigration rules should be strict, but also reasonable. However, Czech republic is not a former colonial empire and doesnt have long lasting history of having all kinds of immigrants in the country and not solving the problems it brings, as UK or France have. So no, I am not affraid we would ever get into the same situation.
