Earlier in the film the narrator mentions that London/Lyyods Maritime Insurance Group. BASED in London was paying the ransom to the pirates. So yes, they are "funding" the pirates by paying the ransom for crew and ship. I hear what you are saying though, it could be confusing if taken out of context.

to everyone who says "you would be a pirate too if you were in their position!" ok, that may be true, but it is also true that if the somalis were in OUR position, and WE were attacking THEIR ships and threatening THEIR trade, in that case, THEY would be doing exactly what we are doing - FIGHTING BACK! so maybe we shouldn't condemn them for being pirates. but on that same note, don't condemn us for doing everything we can to stop them.

Taskforce Ranger was only a few dozen Army Rangers and other Special Forces. They had no fixed wing air support, no armor support (other than the Pakistani APCs), no artillery, and most importantly, it was Clinton's admin that half-heartedly put them there and pulled them out at the first sign of bloodshed. And even then a handful of Rangers, surrounded in a hostile city, killed thousands of Somalis with a loss of only 13 of their own.

This is an existential dilemma... A 20 year old man played no autonomous part in the area he had to grow up in. It is always easy to consider something laterally. Take a moment to enter his matrix, where one mans livelihood is another mans survival, where pundits and universities aren't around to give you any grasp on how the world works or why the hell your children are starving. You give a entropic society no hope and weapons and they'll innovate. Viva La Piratas.

I heard that the pirates are trying to stop the dumping of toxic waste off their shores. Somalia tried to go to the U.N. to stop the dumping, but as usual, it didn't stop the dumping. What are really on those ships. They may be pirates, but you can't say that the corporations that transport these materials are boy scouts. The transport and dumping of toxic waste can be very lucrative except for the people who get it in their backyard.

What we take for granted here in the US never ceases to amaze me...while these pirates are obviously fully responsible for their actions, the utterly abject poverty seen in this video can't be denied. It also seems that piracy will continue to become more prevalent until political and economical stability are returned to the region.

sweetsingeruk:Your statement implies that all piracy including the ones in Somaila where conducted on behalf of CIA. The problem is-your statement is innacurate. It is identical to the principle of the CIA that all terrorists are Al-Qaeda. You must not have presumptions without solid information to back it up,or tell someone just to google it.If you have the info, then let me know. I am willing to look it up. One last thing - What is the motive of the CIA to conduct such operation?

Somalia is a sad story. Before 1960 they were a colony of Britain and France and Italy. When the independence came the colonial power ceded the Ogaden to the Eithopia which should be part of Somalia. Because of this land dispute there was a war between the Eithopia and Somalia. Then country also has a civil war between 5 of there tribes and million are affected. also because there is no government foreign ship regularly fish and dump waste on their beach.

A pirate is a person who lives at the expense and hard work done by others. A pirate is a parasite. Piracy was illegal 1,000 years ago and is illegal in 2009. Let the countries whose ships are attacked defend themselves by shooting and killing the pirates. AN act of war needs that type of response. Kill the PIRATES in order to KILL THE PROBLEM. The world does NOT need these people. Please don't judge every somali because of these pirates.

Regardless what you think about the actions of Blackwater employees, you don't honestly believe a bunch of somalis with ak47s will be able to take out highly trained ex- spec ops soldiers like Blackwater? I hardly have any love for americans (nor their mercs), but Blackwater would absolutely slaughter the 'pirates' (and since vast majority of the Blackwater employees are ex US special ops, they are pretty battle hardened too).

The French operation cost xxx times the ransom. I can understand if they try to stop the "wrong" ship, but it makes no sense spending millions of state dollars on stopping something that cost"little for the involved"private companies. Cultural issues aside,Saudi Arabia, Muslims etc.I dont really think anyone has a real interest in making those water save unless theres money to be made in doing it. Of course,we could make a"War on Jack Sparrow",but will it be worth it?Will it save lives/money?

I give up, at 4:45 - why on Earth should America or the UN have the responsibility of sending troops and ships (and presumably spending alot of tax payers' money) to 'deal with' the somali pirates? Yet another charity case from Africa where their own irresponsible politics and arrogance seems to place the ownus on Europe or America.
