Oh dear... Needless to say I bought one a few years ago for its flower and vigorous growth but it is already larger than I anticipated.

My Dad (rip) lived in Annapolis Md planted two Bradford pear trees in his backyard and loved them ....That is until he found out that everytime a Thunder storm came through and he would loose part of the trees. At one point he actually a 12inch bolt going through the tree to keep it together ...He finally had them both taken down ...you want to upset my dad just mention Bradford pear..

The Callery Pear also spreads by root shoots (suckers) as well. The Callery Pear is commonly planted in Southern California, coast to high desert, but only blooms well in interior areas with winter chill. Here in Southern California, we also have another ornamental pear, Taiwan Flowering Pear (Pyrus kawakamii), which blooms profusely in February, is semi-winter-deciduous, still with nice orange to red fall leaves, but seems in recent years to have some type of disfiguring dieback or maybe a blight, where individual branches die back amidst other healthier ones. Interesting video!

Cut down all that trash and plant some native ornamentals. California is full of beautiful native plants.

Great video. We call it the Cudzu tree in Tennessee. Arsenal or Tardon will take them out.

Should you prune as central leader or multiple leaders when young?

No, get rid of it! It's invasive and spreads like wildfire.

Thanks for the tips, is the Manchurian pear as bad though??

Apparently these invasive trees are leading to an impaired ecosystem. That must be why they regard it as imperative to get rid of them.

Cleveland Pears are also very invasive too and are also being banned in many states because of the economical and ecological damage they do. Don't plant any ornamental pear.
