The Plague / Picking Blackberries At Red Bird Farm On The 4th Of July

Our Independence Day was eventful and restful and enjoyable all at the same time. We visited a nearby farm that was celebrating their 5th anniversary. Red Bird Farm is a u-pick blackberry and flower farm in the summer and a u-cut tree farm during the Christmas holiday.

There is nothing better than fresh picked berries. The blackberries looked awesome. My sister and niece picked Michigan blueberries and made blueberry cobbler. A tasty treat! 🫐

Hey, Richard! The blackberries were delicious. I want to pick fresh blueberries someday. I bet they’re really good. Fresh fruit is always better than store bought.

Thanks, Lisa. It was not bad. We thankfully live in the country. Our closest neighbors are a couple hundred yards away. Their fireworks were still loud, and Bear looked a bit concerned a few times, but he never freaked out. (The dessert was fantastic!)

Oh man, we did pick some for you, but they would’ve gone bad before we got them to you, so we ate half of them with the cake, and Kelly made a cobbler with the rest. 😎

What an amazing barn - why are they always red, John? Too hot for me, you're a tough breed in Oklahoma! Straight off the bush and blackberry pie! :)

Martin, I hate the heat! I prefer a nice, cool, late autumn day. But I suffer through the summer. Barns originally didn’t get painted because farmers were too poor. But they also needed to protect the wood so they made a weather treatment that included iron oxide. This caused it to stain a red rusty color. Also used was linseed oil that stained the wood a dark coral color. Farmers also found the darker barn absorbed more heat than the plain tan wood, making the barns warmer in the winter. Now it’s just traditional to paint them red. (I had to look this up because I didn’t know either. 😜)
