I'm really not sure where he got that 500 years date for smallpox, because we have evidence of it in Egyptian mummies going back 3000 years, and last I heard, geneticists were dating it around 3000 to 4000 years ago. We have records of the disease much older than 500 years. My best guess is he was getting it mixed up with measles, which is around 800 to 900 years old. I have pox romana and am verybinterested to start reading it, but that is a large error that gives me pause.

As the Roman soldiers died on the fight against the invading germanic tribes were none of the germanic soldiers afflicted with this plague?
