This man is amazing. I am a phisician and i totaly submit to is view of insulin as the root of most "chronic" disease. Just wish i had a professor like him when i was in college, istead of the AHA guidelines and so forth. I really hope his and other great researchers in this field gets known and we can see a change in the dogmatic ideas the general public and the medical community have about nutrition and disease. As always, fantastic talk, straight to the point, simple way of conveying complex ideas, a master at his craft.

What an exquisitely constructed talk. Exceptionally profound and almost anti dogmatic. To truly grasp the magnitude of concepts here one must be open minded and have focus and clarity of thought. I have watched hundreds of videos on the same subject. This is by far the best. As a 35+ years type 1 diabetic and nutritional scientist, well done for such as great speech.

Dispite my efforts to drop weight and my cholesterol... I was not able to do so. I asked my doctor what we could do to prove I was at risk of heart disease ... she had me get a coronary calcium score (ct scan) to see buildup in my arteries. My score was 0. Although we may be relatively prosperous it is quite obvious in the UK that diseases related to insulin resistance are more common in the relatively poor . Low incomes will inevitably be spent on foods that will cause insulin resistance. Often the poor are criticised for not ' cooking from scratch ' but fuel poverty is also an issue . It has been for a generation and that is before the present fuel cost crisis !

Can someone in Behavioral Health Science follow up and give a speech on how to make the psychological and behavioral changes needed to implement this incredible new insight? Addiction to sugar & quick carbs can be so difficult to break. Add to that, emotional eating and food-as-reward, and you have a set up for repeating failure. For some, like me... its not knowing what to eat, but how to survive the transition, what to replace it with, and implementing it over the long haul. (Or, am I the only one?) 🤔

In our family we understand the Word of Wisdom to describe a low-glycemic diet, with seasons when we eat fewer vegetables and more meats. We don't do our "cold/famine" high-meat seasons only in the actual winter or dry season, but we've developed a looser cycle that's still influenced by the actual seasons and seems to work.

Some say the invention of the steel mill increased the glycemic effect of bread. Also eating bread all day everyday is not normal. People in biblical times were working hard and probably eating once or twice a day. There are a lot of goat harder in the bible also so meat and dairy was surely on the menu. Also Google Nathan Bourlag. I'm not sure of the first name but I'm positive on the last name. Won the Nobel prize for crossbreeding wheat and grass together to create a species man had never eaten but shortened the wheat to allow for the application of industrial fertilizer. Bourlag ended famine in India because of this invention which was the beginning of massive population increases in India.

Just had my 90 year old rural neighbor over last night. She said they only ate what they grew or raised growing up and nothing else. Think about how prosperous even the poorest person with access to commercial industrial farming is. Our global productivity has us drowning in carbs, with little cost or effort. Consider how long you'd have to work to grow wheat to net a barrel of flour. Now it costs a couple bucks, the equivalent of just a days labour even at the poorest level globally. Let that sink in. What used to take months of labor can now buy the same amount of flour in seconds, minutes, or at the absolute "poverty" level, take a day or two. Yes, we are much more prosperous than the vast majority of every human who ever walked the Earth for tens of thousands of years.

I ordered my own fasting insulin test through Ultalabs. Insulin plus fasting glucose (you need both) cost around $50. They contract with local blood withdrawal places; Quest Diagnostics’s in my area. Or, you can order your own through Quest. You can look up “ The Blood Code” online to see how to calculate your HOMA Index from fasting insulin and glucose. Most doctors don’t have a clue about insulin.

You can burn calories and glucose but you cannot burn insulin. Sure, if we exercise enough we wouldn't need as much insulin to push the glucose. But, our modern american diet is so full of sugars and fats that it's near impossible to avoid an insulin spike. Doing that constantly and with snacks will also drive IR and all the subsequent problems. The Word of Wisdom says meat has been provided to use for use in times of "winter, famine and excess of hunger". D&C 89:13&15 If you are insulin resistant, you need to lose weight. That means you need to go through a time of excess hunger/famine. So eat more meat when you need to lose weight. Start by cutting out refined flours and anything made with them. Cut out sweets and treats, including ice cream, juices and sodas. Then use meats to help you manage your hunger. You'll find more about how to do this by reading about low-glycemic diets and intermittent fasting.

Sorry...instead of saying "if you are insulin resistant you need to lose weight" I should have said "if you are insulin resistant you need to lower your insulin levels, and one good way to do that is to lose weight." Increase fat and protein consumption, and cut back on other foods. You'll find your body adjusts well to this time of "excess hunger". You'll be aware that you're eating a lot less, but the fat and protein will make it tolerable. Just make sure to eat enough high-fiber vegetables throughout this process (like cracked wheat with butter, or baked sweet potatoes with butter), to keep feeding your gut bacteria. You need those bacteria healthy to protect the lining in your gut, which keeps you from getting auto-immune disorders. Those bacteria eat fiber, and they're essential to your health.

I agree, meat is both protein and fat. He put some emphasis on eating both more protein and fat. Help me understand why the word of wisdom talks about avoiding meat considering it is both a great source of protein and fat.

A new low carb word of wisdom?!?
@akkids6887
@akkids6887 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with Bikman that the Lord has not provided many details on specific applications of the Word of Wisdom, so there is a lot of flexibility in how you interpret it. In our family we've come to interpret it, using modern language, as a low-glycemic diet combined with intermittent fasting. That means for us: -Wheat as our primary grain, eaten whole (cracked or in bread). Other grains also, but less often. -Lots of vegetables and tubers, and fruits in season. -Lots of nuts, oils, butter and cheese, and full-fat yogurt. Together with whole wheat this gives us enough day-to-day protein. Then we add: Periods of intermittent fasting when we cut even further back on carbohydrates, and increase our consumption of meats to help manage hunger. D&C 89:12-13, 15 . We've done this for a while and it seems like our bodies were designed to do this. It seems to work. (If you need to lose a lot of weight, it makes sense to self-impose a time of "excess hunger", and eating mostly fats, plus meats and high-fiber vegetables.) At the same time we've cut out all sodas and juices. We eat white bread rarely and always as part of a meal. We stopped having desserts and eat ice cream and other treats only on special occasions. (There's nothing in the Word of Wisdom that encourages us to eat sugars or simple starches.) This all seems pretty compatible with the Word of Wisdom.

It's great that you've been able to adapt well to a low-glycemic, low-insulin diet. Take care of your gut, though. You may find that you need to feed fiber to your gut bacteria. Without fiber your gut bacteria will eat away the lining of your intestine and start to enter your bloodstream. That can lead to bloating, inflammation, and auto-immune disorders. Here's a link to some research on this: www.nytimes.com/2018/01/01/science/food-fiber-microbiome-inflammation.html Granted, in this study they didn't out all sugar, but the lack of fiber by itself seems to be the cause for the intestinal walls thinning and allowing gut bacteria to encroach. So if you find that your digestion is beginning to suffer, or you're having auto-immune or inflammation problems, consider cycling all-meat seasons with high-fiber seasons, or possibly mixing low-glycemic, high-fiber tubers and vegetables with your meats. In our family we interpret the Word of Wisdom to recommend cycling between meat + tuber seasons and high-fiber vegetable seasons, and it has worked well for us for several years.

AK Kids I’ve been following a Keto diet for 7 months and my stomach has been healed. I went to bed nauseated, with stomach pain for 20+years. I also had horrible Reflux for years. I had many tests done and ended up in the hospital with severe pain - they could not find a way to help me. I followed every they told me, I was so desperate. Within one week of starting Keto, all of my stomach problems were gone! I feel great all the time!! I have researched and found that this is a very common result. Now I ALWAYS check who funds a study. It’s very revealing.
