Insulin resistance is the root cause of why we get sick. Dr Ben Bikman explains in his book "WHY WE GET SICK" how chronic diseases can all be improved by increasing insulin sensitivity, and lowering carbohydrates in the diet. Keeping blood sugar stable/lower will improve health overall and therefore helps any other chronic health issue or symptom of poor health.
Dr Ben Bikman is a leader in the world of diabetes research and fat metabolism. He understands the energy pathways for health and performance better than most and his book is an absolute gold mine of information on how to lower inflammation and improve your health. Everything including fertility, skin issues, cancer, and heart disease is covered in his book.
This podcast with Pete Jacobs is a great source of information on metabolism, energy, sickness and health. We hope you enjoy and grab a copy online of Ben's book. It really will open your eyes to so many health issues and how to improve them, and health overall.

"A scientist reveals the groundbreaking evidence linking many major diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease, to a common root cause-insulin resistance-and shares an easy, effective plan to reverse and prevent it.
We are sick. Around the world, we struggle with diseases that were once considered rare. Cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes affect millions each year; many people are also struggling with hypertension, weight gain, fatty liver, dementia, low testosterone, menstrual irregularities and infertility, and more. We treat the symptoms, not realizing that all of these diseases and disorders have something in common.
Each of them is caused or made worse by a condition known as insulin resistance. And you might have it. Odds are you do-over half of all adults in the United States are insulin resistant, with most other countries either worse or not far behind.
In Why We Get Sick, internationally renowned scientist and pathophysiology professor Benjamin Bikman explores why insulin resistance has become so prevalent and why it matters. Unless we recognize it and take steps to reverse the trend, major chronic diseases will be even more widespread. But reversing insulin resistance is possible, and Bikman offers an evidence-based plan to stop and prevent it, with helpful food lists, meal suggestions, easy exercise principles, and more. Full of surprising research and practical advice, Why We Get Sick will help you to take control of your health."

Our family has a history of diabetes, heart attack, cancer, dementia, strokes and pancreas issues. This is across 3 generations and in both paternal and maternal blood lines multipletimes in all generations. I have been fortunate enough to not suffer with any of these ailments as yet ( 52yo) but the writing was on the wall ( joints, a little overweight, anxious, demotivated, etc) and I went low carb/ keto a year ago with great results and a new lease on life. ( lighter and healthier than I have been since about the age of 14.) After watching and listening to Dr Bikman for the last 6 months or so, I recently ordered 2 copies of the book. One for me to further understand the detail. The other to share with my family. Education is empowerment. It's never to late and Dr. B makes learning enjoyable and provides so many light bulbs moments that help everyone. Buy extra copies and leave a copy on your desk at work. Guaranteed someone will see it and ask about it and want to borrow it. Leverage the knowledge 👌 great work guys

Keto can cause insulin resistance in the long run, despite great weight loss at first. Avoid oil. Too much Oil causes fat around organs which is definition of insulin resistance. C peptide test for resistance.
@sophtayl
@sophtayl 2 ай бұрын
@@user-co5yp2jr8n where does the oil come from? Which oil are you referring to? Please explain the mechanism you are describing. Vegetable/ Seed oils are a problem. But I'm struggling to understand your reference that keto causes insulin resistance considering you aren't piking insulin and how this is oils. I'm more confused by your comments

@@sophtaylShe meant dietary fats. Fat has the highest energy density and is in the right form for storage. Over nutrition especially in the form of fats is problematic. When the adipose tissues are full, where else can the fat go? In the tongue we get sleep apnea and snoring. In the liver we get insulin resistance and fatty liver. In the pancreas we get pancreatitis and insulin secretion problems.
@sophtayl
@sophtayl Ай бұрын
@@Mr-hn2bp sounds Luke we are confounding multiple aspects. The same can be said for excess carbs and more likely as the carbs will trigger insulin spike and conversion to fat storage. Your description of dietary fat creating insulin resistance is an interesting concept which goes against what Dr Bikman has documented. You need insulin to cause fat storage. Fat ( in the absence of carbs) has a subtle effect on insulin. Excess fat will also pass through the bowel once the bile is expended. All within appropriate quantities. Noting also that energy expenditure plays a part.

loved when he mentioned urea being high towards the end. . When I started feeling horrible on carnivore.. I was a bit too lean (not enough fat on me) heck, I was underweight and was eating lots of organ meats (not alot of fat , pretty lean) and although I was cooking my meat in butter and animal fat, it probably wasn't enough. My urea was extremely high. Hmm...now my urea is normal and i am actually eating fattier cuts of meat bc I feel better eating that way. Perhaps that is why! Also loved how he mentioned about fasting. I was able to fast for 5 days when I started my weight loss journey, it was easy. Now I can only do omad bc I am too lean. And definately don't want my body to get at my muscle. I felt like a fail bc I had to go to omad from extended fasts. After listening to this, I don't. going lowcarb, helped keep my insulin low and fasting was succesful! Now I go to omad, keep low carb and will continue to be successful for life bc I am keeping my insulin LOW!

I’ve been following Ben for a long time and being a type 2 diabetic in remission for 2 years is all down to his and others research. Too many health benefits to mention but one main issue was debilitating reflux and foot pain- all now gone thanks to low carb eating with very little fructose and zero seed oils

I found through my circle of friends and my family that they would rather not worry about eating right. They would rather get sick, take pills, complain about their health and do nothing. I feel like I'm alone in caring about my health. It's not always fun to exercise and sacrifice cake, but I really care about my health. So I believe that is why there are not a lot of views. People are watching Netflix and eating Cheetos.

@@beautifulrose8619 you are not alone. I think that behavior is often due to how useless has been most advice about how to improve your health provided by the doctors. I'd bet most of those people have been on a low calories diet more than once in their life and they have been eating 5 or 6 times a day as recommend, so they lost some weight, and eventually that weight (and more) came back in spite of their effort. So there's a point in which you wonder what's the point of making sacrifices, if in the end they don't work. And you decide to do whatever pleases do, beacuse it doesn't really matter what you do, you'll be sick anyway. I know because... been there, done that. However every now and then I tried again, and failed again, which really even made me get worse (so much yoyo dieting really messed up my metabolism). That changed when I was diagnosed T2D and I was lucky enough to have a new doctor that recommended me to reduce carbohydrates (first time I ever heard about that). That allowed me to find out about fasting, keto, insulin resistance, how to deal with stress... The sources of all my health issues. I lost 68 lb in 6 months, and my health is going back to normal. So, just be patient with those people. They just heard so much BS in their lives they won't believe anything, unless they see it with their own eyes. With time, some will hopefully be more receptive.

So fasting insulin should be below 6 uIU/mL *AND* bloodcode's HOMA-IR score ( insulin (mU/l) × glucose (mg/dl) / 405 ) should be below 1? Due to differences in RBC turnover among people, I've heard A1C (6), Blood Uric Acid ( .7)? Testosterone (> 600), free-Testosterone (> 25) (Dr. Abraham Morgentaler suggests TRT should be considered if calculated-free-testosterone is less than 100pcg/ml) For example Chris Kresser suggests: Transferrin (30-40%) , ferritin levels of 80-100 ng/mL. (the usual 'Iron Saturation' test, can be used as a close proxy for Transferrin, but only if you've had your Transferrin measured at least once, and the following formula holds true: 'Iron Saturation' = ( Serum Iron / Transferrin ) *.79;

Hi, about the triglycerides and HDL, I think I can give you a couple answers I found in different sources and I finally put together. There is a thing called diabetic dyslipidemia. It is caused by insulin resistance and consists on low HDL, high triglycerides and high LDL, BUT these are not really out of the normal range but just about the extreme of each range. For a male that means HDL about 40 (sorry, i think we use different units), triglycerides about 150, and LDL about 100. When I was diagnosed T2D 6 months ago my figures were roughly those. This combination typically also means the small dense (dangerous) fraction of LDL is far too much, and you're developing atheroma. When your insulin is high, the first cells that become insulin resistant are adipocytes, then liver cells, then muscle cells. Insulin does not only impair glucose metabolism, but also lipid metabolism. Quilomicrons and VLDL and LDL lipoproteins can't deliver correctly their load to the cells, so they pass it to HDL. And HDL take it to the liver, which uses them... To produce more LDL, hence high LDL. Due to extra work HDL's life is shorter than it should, they can't be replaced fast enough, hence low HDL. About triglycerides, when there is too much glucose in the blood for too long (due to insulin resistance), the liver tries to reduce it by transforming it to fat, triglycerides, hence high TG. High TG are due to high glucose, hence damage arteries intima, and to LDL, which eventually will get under the damaged intima and will stick there, causing atheroma. This is very insidious because every parameter in the test separately and total colesterol are all within normal range, or just out of it, so there are no red flags in the lab results and it's normally missed by the doctors. I recently found a blood test I had done 3 year ago, and in it I had HDL 40 and LDL 92 (so my guess is insulin resistance was already there), and TG 110, meaning glucose was still relatively under control, which makes sense because I had fasting glucose 75

All these test are typically covered (at least partially) by insurance, although I guess you can go to any lab or clinic abd have them done (out of your pocket). They can be expensive if you go this way though. Try talking to your doctor in your next checkup, if a reasonable person, there is no reason not to order these.

@Dust Storm This is excellent. So what kind of tools do I buy to measure glucose and ketones? So the range you got was under ketogenic healing? Thank is really awesome. Thank you for this information. I've been told by doctors that I am pre diabetic, then diabetic, (I panicked and went on a keto diet). now I am back to pre diabetic. I would love to be in the normal range. I like Dr. Boz too.

How much of protein we should eat if you are medium buily lady?

It depends on how much other things your eating. It my understanding one should eat meat in the amount of the size of the palm of your hand. If your doing a keto or carnivore I'd double that.

Don't just promote apple cider vinegar (ACV). The active ingredient in ACV is acetic acid, so any vinegar will have the same benefit, even white vinegar. Should mention about essential fatty acids from algae and fatty fish.

@@pattihy location and quantity, if your 600lbs that's way to much white fat no matter what.... he does mention that how your white fat is growing will make a difference in how quickly it becomes a bad thing... whether your fat is growing by making new fat cells vs growing by overstuffing your existing cells.... thou neither way of growing is strictly good, but new cells are definitely better then overstuffed cells

@@pattihy too little fat is a problem too, like he mentions reproductive function can hault in women if they loose to much weight, like those who are anorexic.... you definitely want some white fat, just not alot.... and location matters like you said.... in and around organs is much worse than on your thighs

1:07:14 -- I drink coconut oil mixed with water each day on my ~7 hr dirt bike rides in the mountains with issue ...Other than take some CR tissue with you.. No hunger and energy levels stay AOK. I get most of my coconut oil from local farmers AND not the stored purchased clear stuff. MCT oils are gonna be *processed* to some degree. Buying ketones are also processed. F these shortcuts until they are proven 100% as good and safe OR you are going down the same road we all have been on for the last 50+ yrs looking for drugs and shortcuts to be healthy.. lol

Ben said that insulin is causing you to become insulin resistance, but that is mechanism? I think that high insulin causes cells to accumulate energy (e.g. glucose, fats), so they become resistance to insulin. Mechanism would be not insulin causes insulin resistance, but accumulation of energy substrates make cells resistance to insulin. Have any seen a study which would investigate this hypothesis?

"seeing" the exact mechanisms in progress and over long periods of time within the human body is not an easy thing to investigate... not sure what is or is not possible at that level.

A naturally occurring enzyme facilitates the entry of insulin into the fat cell. Maybe others. This enzyme works with normal levels of blood insulin but high levels inhibit it.

@@yolandelucire6547 Insulin binds to it receptors and active process in adipocytes which ends up in accumulation in fat. If adipocyte can't take anymore energy (it's full), they don't respond to insulin.
