I was already aware this video would upset some people which is why I put a disclaimer. If you are easily hurt or offended I recommend you click off this video. If you live in an area where you could ask any adult if they collect dolls and most of them do, then you are very lucky.. because that’s not most of our world. Once again, no one is denying that collectors are big and they appear to grow every year or so, but once again, you are lying to yourself if you think more adults buy dolls for themselves than the parents buying toys for their children. My apologies if this video came off as “harsh” but if you found this video offensive then this isn’t the channel for you. edit: Also I was suppose to have this video made and released a long time ago but things came up, so this video is probably to age like dog water. 2nd edit: Obviously there are other factors that come into play but the things I mentioned in this video is still apart of the other varying factors. I assumed that everyone else would have also known that there’s more to it but I was wrong for assuming people would think that. I am aware of the other things that contribute towards this whole controversy… and I must say companies aren’t just spending money left and right like that anymore like they use to (not in this economy).

I really enjoyed this video. A lot of research went into it and I can't think of another doll channel with level headed opinions, solid formatting, AND perspective on the toy industry going back more than 5 years. This video was extremely refreshing to listen to. Thank you for sharing❤ edit: I'm extremely excited about the RH soft reboot. Listening to kids who wanted Rainbow High dolls whose parents couldn't afford them in Target for the last 3 years has been depressing. Now they have a realistic option to get dolls with beautiful faces and still ok quality, albeit less detailed, clothing and accessories. I hope kids who couldn't have RH dolls because they were so expensive have a chance to have some now.

You are perfectly fine because I was getting ready to get in the comments and say that myself because some of these old heads and some of these teen collectors really be thinking that adult collectors are the prime demographic for these dolls, just because they appeal to them🥴 Just because their timeline is filled with LIKEMINDED INDIVIDUALS on a platform that is a restricted to 13+ does not erase the whole reason and people these products were made for Yeah, came out good I don’t know why you didn’t keep that stuff in the food you could just take the thing the roast…children!!!

I definitely think price was a big factor in the down fall. However, I think another thing that didn't help was the fact that RH would cycle through new characters like it was nothing. You would be introduced to a new character (doll), and then after that season's webisodes were over, you hardly saw that character again. So, I'm sure even in the kids mind, it was a disappointment to get a new character and then they were shoved to the background. It makes it pointless to care about the new character/doll.
@TheOfficialPrettyPrincess
@TheOfficialPrettyPrincess 11 ай бұрын
Yes!! That was around (series 3ish 4ish) when I stopped caring for the show like that because I realized we barely would see those characters in the show play a good role. Even Monster High was better with their addition to new characters and using them than Rainbow High and that’s saying something. SALE THE DOLL TO ME. I would have probably liked Daria more if I didn’t keep forgetting about her in the show, and when I was a kid, if you weren’t an at least SOMEWHAT reoccurring character then I wouldn’t care about the doll. edit: and the show started declining season after season, I’ve even heard a lot of Rainbow High fans stopped watching the show after Pacific Coast (so did I) and some even before that.

Yeah! Everyone gets excited when there are new dolls but then beg MGA to slow on the releases. Like which one you want??? Also, something I've noticed is that I wouldn't say it's very easy to get into rainbow high recently, but especially now. They just stop producing the older dolls! I really don't get why they would do that besides not having enough money to continue producing them. It would be understandable at the least if they stopped producing the old ones in store, and then still keep all of them online. But they are so hard to find at retail price(or even at all) online. It would be more convenient and consistent if they kept all of them in stock online, but you can only find like half of them at retail price, even on amazon. Even the official lol website only has like 1/3 of them on their website!!! Anyway, this just makes it harder and more expensive for people who are new to collecting rainbow high(at this point just forget it, because they're not going to produce any of them anymore soon).

MGA has been making dolls for a very long time now, and after the 2015 Bratz reboot they're not stupid enough to do another "for younger kids" reboot. They've launched 2 new successful doll lines in the last 5 years with OMG and RH, as well as successfully bringing Bratz back from the dead after several failed generations and reboots. They clearly have a very good pulse on the market and what's going on right now. This RH rebranding is very clearly a tactical move, its not a desperate plea for money or a desperate attempt to get kids interested, its a tactical implosion of the brand, at least in terms of catering to adult collectors. If anything its a clear move that catering to adult collectors wasn't working for a playline brand. Wether that's to benefit Bratz or not is yet to be seen, but it is insanely coincidental that the first Bratz playline reboot to happen in 9 years by 2024, happens to hit the shelves the EXACT same week they purposely implode RHs adult collectability, pushing the slime dolls to shelves and sending out PR to people.

That’s what I was stating in the video. When I kept talking about “Rainbow High is a kids brand” I mentioned how expensive the dolls tended to be for a kids brand and how (in my area at the very least) they didn’t sell well and recently I heard that was the same case for other people as well. But yeah MGA knows what they’re doing, Monster High in 2016 is a good example of what this is reminding me of.

@@TheOfficialPrettyPrincess Yeah, I completely agreed with you. As someone who lives in Europe the deluxe RH dolls like the Sleepover dolls were going for £50-75, which of course no parent is going to pay for a single doll for a child. They did seem to bring the prices down as they got wider releases to £40-50, but its still wild for one deluxe playline doll.

@soapcantelope LoL OMG were highly successful for their first few years, they're clearly waning in popularity right now, but you can't deny for a couple of years they were incredibly succesful. RH has managed to survive a lot longer than most other doll brands. If you're comparing their metrics to the success Bratz had, then of course they're not *AS* succesful as Bratz, but that doesn't mean they were a failure by any means. I personally don't think any doll line has come close to the success of Bratz, MH being the only real contender. Most other doll lines introduced by other companies in the last decade can't even last a single year. Even MGA's own Mermaze & Dream Ella didn't last more than a couple releases. So for lines like LOL OMG & RH to stick around as long as they have certainly doesn't make them failures. If you're going to compare everything to the success of Bratz then almost everything would be a failure by comparison.

Well said… Well said... Some adult collectors are in denial that RH and SH basically just take up space on Walmart and Target shelves. The major retailers have steadily been reducing orders of the newer RH and SH lines. In contrast... Bratz has proven to hit the sweet spot of balance of adult collectors and kid play line dolls. This recent RH move is a last ditch effort at survival financially of the brand in some way. Bratz is the most strategic and most practical focus going ahead for MGA. There still are likely to be high quality limited edition RH release dolls offered on MGA’s website like Mattel Creations is currently doing. Unfortunately this move is causing some adult collectors much stress and heartaches... but business is business.

Sure I’m only 13 but rainbow high was the first doll line that I actually started to consider myself a collector with. I never liked Barbies or anything that had the typical blonde hair blue eyes red lips, bright colors always stood out to me, hence why I loved L.O.L. Dolls as a little kid. Rainbow high was the first *ACTUAL* fashion doll brand I truly fell in love with, rainbow high had something that not even bratz or monster high portrayed to me. They were so good at implying what diversity and uniqueness meant, varying from darker skin tones, fair skin, all the way to vitiligo and albinism. And being one of rainbow high’s biggest supporters since day one, it’s really sad to see such a beautiful doll line slowly fade away.

But if people are feeling represented more power to everyone involved. I just take everything that comes from mga with a grain of salt, i feel like they would drop diversity at the drop of a hat if it meant more profit which is not something i feel with other brands, but definetly because they hide it better not because of some genuine virtue becausr they all are for profits afterall lol I wished u could enjoy RH as much as you because it's my dream doll series besides strawberry shortcake lol. Honestly, THIS. At first I wondered if it was a finance issue when RH and tweens were dipping at the same time, but the peculiar timing of the Always Bratz Dolls popping up just now made it clear as daylight that this was intentional. The new Bratz come with the usual MGAE "wham" we're used to, so its not a financial issue, its MGAE intentionally moving attention away from RH/tweens to focus it on Bratz. I mean, it sorta worked cuz after being kinda bummed out about the new RH dolls, seeing the new Bratz felt refreshing and it will probably generate more hype now when they are not releasing next to peak RH and co. They'll still be making money off RH, but they want to focus on Bratz now.

Tbh I would be perfectly fine with Rainbow High having more accessories and more Bratz-like articulation, if the fashions were still cute, and maybe a bit more character focused, doing some fun hairstyles, ect. I think having dolls at different price points is really important and if they wanted to make some more accessible, removing articulation and doll stands and brushes is perfectly reasonable. The only problem issue I have is that is feels like MGA is trying less overall, like you said, milking the brand for what its known for, but not really putting as much time and thoguht into creating the dolls. They're definetly not horrible dolls, there's some good there, but overall it feels very careless to even kids. Because the kids are gonna notice that Bratz dolls on shelves are just better, they aren't stupid. All Rainbow High has now is the colorful hair and fashions, and I don’t think that will be enough to outlast the competition for long. They'll probably do fine enough, but Monster High is getting good, Bratz is back, and Barbie might not be at her best but she's got massive power now Post Barbie Movie. I think Rainbow High might get swept away.

I think it’s a good thing MGA’s targeting kids & poorer collectors. There’s something smart about Mattel’s separation of catering 2 kids & adults. The production proportion is balanced 4 both audiences - cheaper & simpler 4 kids while adults get more complex. If I was a doll collector as a kid, I’d probably won’t b allowed 2 have more than 1 at a time. Though, I’d argue, Bratz is already currently predominately adult targeted, I hope this would open the company 2 releasing occasional special releases rather than overstocking store shelves.

Honestly this video gave me a needed wake up call. RH/SH brought me back into doll collecting by making detailed collector level dolls that were also playline. But in a selfish way I forgot about the fact that they are indeed just toys. Me and many collectors felt overwhelmed in 2022 and sometimes burned out. Too many dolls, too expensive, and too many lines to keep up with. If adult collectors thought the CB dolls were too expensive for the value then I can't imagine parents! Especially with what other ppl are saying about certain details which don't matter as much to kids. So many small breakable pieces, styled gelled hair and outfits would be such a frustrating thing for kids. My RH collection is still growing bc i personally think the dolls are so pretty and versatile! But realistically they're hard to play with, overpriced and not as accessible to the main demographic. As much as i will miss RH as it was, this video contextualizes a lot of the more logical reasons as to why this happened. On the surface such a well praised line by adults would last longer, but really, Bratz is MGA's most popular brand. Putting the same effort in a brand that is more affordable to keep afloat is def the move. In fact i think I wanna finally start a Bratz collection now that RH is cooling down 😅😅😅

It bugs me how much people can't really connect the dots for why Rainbow High is getting a soft reboot. The writing was on the wall. There was just too many problems with the brand and I've talked about it at length before. MGA flooded the market with Rainbow High in 2022, with eighteen 30 dollar dolls, fifteen 40 dollar dolls, twelve 22 dollar dolls, and four collector dolls. Who was ever going to buy all of that? No one apparently! It was so easy to get these dolls on massive clearance. I don't believe retailers ever made much of a profit on these dolls. The thing I noticed over time was that the lines that sold out at Walmart and Target were never the premium 40 dollar dolls. It was always Junior High that sold out. And rainbow High series 4, but Junior High with their less, stuff, clearly had the higher profit margin. Is it any shock that Junior High is the one line continuing relatively unchanged aside from the loss of articulation. There were also other things like MGA including extra embellishments on the dolls that kids would never care for. And me. Like those stupid manicures that made the hands impossible to take off. No parent or kid would like that. Or clothes being extremely difficult to use like Poppy's jacket (Another reason she's getting killed). But another thing I've noticed is that the adult collector community isn't as here for Rainbow High as we think it is. I attempted to join a bunch of doll discord servers over the past year and what I noticed in them was that people didn't really buy that many rainbow high dolls. I was one of the few with a large collection. Most people had like 15 maybe? And they were mostly from before the prices started going up or were from the more affordable lines. Adult collectors were never going to carry this brand.

this and the fact that rainbow high dealt with so much controversy from adult fans. from not being diverse enough, leaks, not liking the face shimmer, quality control etc. you had people like Zombiexcorn emailing MGA asking for a refund/ replacement everytime they found a minor defect. adult fans would complain so much and be so nitpicky. An example I can also bring into this situation is the 2004 Littlest Pet Shop produced by hasbro. I was a committed LPS collector, I only wanted to get their toys as a kid. So when I did get the chance to stop by my local toy store I would buy a few (if my parents were feeling generous). They were very popular during 2004-2012 until they dropped generation 3 pets, lps fans/serious collectors started to distance themselves from those LPS. They were so different, no bobbly head, they looked abstract, and they wanted to follow the new LPS show that came out on the hub network during the 2014. I think hasbro made a huge mistake because those LPS didn’t really sell out. Their toys starting to go on clearance even when they were still continuing with LPS. I also remember new toy lines were coming out. Hasbro made their last generation of LPS, G4 during 2014-2016. They made their LPS have bobble heads but they didn’t look like Littlest Pet Shop, just different animals. I also noticed the toys were rarely on stock in stores, their section was so much smaller. Sometimes I would see thier blind boxes in the clearance section again. Littlest Pet Shop went on hiatus after that while other toy lines like LOL surprise were getting quite popular. On 2024, basic fun and hasbro will release their new LPS with a nostalgic touch and they look like G2 pets. So I hope that works out! I feel like bratz deserves their time to shine honestly. I never liked rainbow high dolls because their eyes creep me out. My sister will be very happy about these new bratz!

This makes sense. Tbh I love it. I’m a Bratz girl. And grew up with the line. Eventually grew out of it. Went into middle school in 2007/2008. Towards the end of the line. Got into collecting in 2016. Tripped out on the lines between then. This feels like the first official relaunch of Bratz. I love the accessories. Which ironically enough, so many adults complained about the lack of them.

Unfortunately, most toy lines only last a few years… An example is Kenner’s original Littlest Pet Shop series, such a huge part of my childhood, existed probably less than 10 years, maybe only about 4-6. Rainbow High sort of capitalized on a “moment” when Rainbows and Unicorns were very “in,” and they (MGA) probably were always going to move onto something else, regardless of how popular they are. They all can’t be GI Joe and Barbie… two toy lines that have stood the test of time. Most toy lines come and go every 5 or so years, as kids tastes, (and the cultural zeitgeist) changes. Probably no one is going to want a “Poopsie” unicorn for example, 5 years from now. That’s just the way it is, though for collectors this has always been a double-edged sword: It’s sad when your favorite collection gets discontinued, but it’s fun to have a rare doll or toy that doesn’t exist anymore. ❤️

Rainbow High got be back into collecting dolls, but to me they felt like Bratz Junior if that makes sense… when Bratz and Monster High came back, I turned more of my attention (and money) to those brands. I have a lotttt of Rainbow High, but almost every doll was purchased on clearance. I’ve also felt less connection with my RH collection since getting back into Bratz, Barbie, and MH (especially since I have childhood nostalgia for those brands). I think I will keep the RH dolls that I already have, as I like them, but I probably will not buy any more RH dolls (especially with the Bratz Babyz coming back-those were my favorite dolls as a kid!)

I agree with pretty much all you've said here, I figured they were just funneling that money into Bratz. It's sad to see an era end, especially since I only became a doll collector a couple months ago (and I started with RH) but I know it's just business, and they're gonna make efforts to segregate the market to better target products. I just wish it wasn't Bratz, lol. I don't really like their faces, something about large detail-less lips with almost no nose at all just kinda unnerves me. On the bright side, I'll be able to hunt down all of the rainbow high dolls I want!

this was so JUIICYY!! i loved your intro it made me feel like i was watching a whole documentary! 2nd you are so brave for calling RH ugly genuinely 😂 there's so many reasons i couldn't enjoy them but can i just mention those god awful joints 😭 like i hate to look at any RH dolls when their legs or arms are bent and the joint is exposed... it looks like some Five Nights at Freddys shit and as you said these were expensive dolls 😭 also their bodies made it so that only extremely small/tight clothing was flattering, they looked dead shapeless in so many types of clothes i'm sorry. lastly their faces looked weird as hell from a 3/4 angle. like their chins and jaws were shaved down wayy too much. alright that's my rant i figured now was a good time to get it off my chest 😅 finally im regards to adult collectors, you are so so correct that they can act incredibly spoiled and just completely aloof. i do understand that with all of us being online in a community, it can seem like SO MANY people are involved and SO MUCH activity is happening that we MUST be a huge part of the market, but the reality is if you look a lil deeper you kinda see the same people all the time and even "big" YTubers by doll standards are tiny by mainstream standards. ALSO keep in mind most kids aren't posting about their dolls! they're playing with them. we don't see them because they aren't (usually) participating in the online community like we adults are. i am actually pretty recent into the doll community (started March '23) so maybe i'm just more sensitive to noticing these things as someone who more recently came from "outside", but i'm kind of stunned from the lack of perspective i keep seeing in YT, reddit, instagram comments from other adult collectors. i love the point you're making about how if a company tries to cater to collectors too much through their playline dolls, it can have a negative impact on the brand as parents may be less likely to buy! things like playsets, pets, and accessories are so important to children, so if we axed those like many adult collectors want, well then we'd axe the dolls as well cuz the company wouldn't make enough sales to justify keeping the brand alive!

Yes!! Thank you so much for the support and I’ve been doll collecting sense I wanna say 2020 (despite playing with dolls as a kid I don’t count those like that because they were taken from me). Someone in my comments said something along the lines of “kids aren’t the millions of followers on Rainbow High’s social media”, for one, there ARE kids online that follow Rainbow High (I know because I’ve read their comments on RH’s account and when I had a Rainbow High based Instagram most of my audience appeared to be children even though it was a small following). But even then, most kids aren’t chronically online like most of us are anyway. And then they compared Playline collectors to Integrity Toys collectors and it was delusional to even compare the two. Also YESS!!! THE DAMN PROPORTIONS AND ARTICULATION!! I think the fashions are pretty nice (although I realized I prefer a more alternative style and/or street wear fashion more than designer high class fashion) but the fact they looked like glorified baby dolls and the elbow joint couldn’t extend straight was “ugh!” And again them ugly ass faces 😭 they’re okay from the front but don’t turn them any other angle. ANS I AGREE WITH THE FASHIONS HAVING TO BE TIGHT AND EVERYTHING YOU SAID!! I could go on and on but 😭

It took me a very long time to appreciate RH. At first, I had issues with the proportions but I did not know exactly what was bugging me. I thought they had ugly legs. I did not like the obvious joints at all. I thought they were bulky too. I was not that keen on their eyes either. The branded fashion was not really my cup of tea. It was not a good start but... they grew massively on me I don't know how, especially SH. I really appreciate the ones I have. I totally disagree about them being ugly and looking good only from the front. I have taken close up pictures from different angles, profile, half profile and they look great from any angles. Surprisingly very photogenic! I think they are unsuitable for play, to undress and redress numerous times like children do (not like adults collectors do!) but this is another story!

@@darklight4251 Yeah, a lot of the things you mentioned as to why you didn’t like them t fist is the same reasons I don’t like them either. Minus our thoughts on the faces sense beauty is subjective and everyone has their own preference. (I like SH better too) I also find RH/SH hard to play with because I’m afraid to break something, which is why I’m not the biggest fan of collector dolls because (much like a child) I like to actually play with my dolls without having to worry about breaking the clothes or anything. And I also view things as a parent because I plan on having kids of my own, and I always think about “what if my kids were playing with these? Would they last?”

They're doing the same thing to RH they did with Bratz around 2009-10 when they started to slowly fall off (due to Mattel's annoying long ass lawsuits because they were sore about Bratz outselling *another fashion doll* in the market) where they started making low budget Bratz dolls with that AWFUL polypropylene hair and cheap outfits which people didn't like which led to the downfall of Bratz. As happy as I am Bratz are coming back especially after the Bratz Babyz Reproductions and Alwayz Playline dolls leaked, I do feel sad for Rainbow High fans and kids who felt the same way about them the way millions of kids and collectors including myself felt about Bratz back in the day. It is still a huge huge risk tho as there's no guarantee Bratz today would make it big with kids who grew up with Rainbow High or toys like that. Regardless fingers crossed and hope everything works out

I had my doubts when people were saying that MGA was sacrificing their brands for bratz, but after seeing the new always bratz I think you're right about this. the dolls are fully articulated, and the fashions are layered and high quality. I am curious if you think the cancelation of mermaze and dream ella had an impact on RH? you mentioned how expensive new sculpts are, and both of those lines had new body, shoe, accessory, head, etc molds. that had to have hurt MGA. do you think that could be why they nerfed both lol and rh? I absolutely agree that adult collectors today have a very overinflated view on their impact on the market. even if kids don't necessarily love dolls, think about how many people run down the doll aisle before taking their kids to a birthday party, or people who buyy gifts without a lot of specific intention! a lot of people see dolls as just a "default" or easy gift. I'm also sure tweens/young teens make up a larger demographic than adult collectors. I think most toy companies see adult collectors as the cherry on top, but not a group they need to spend more chasing after.

They're beautiful, they're creative and though I dont like all of them, the one's I do like, definitely speaks to me. As far as the black dolls in the rainbow high line up the only ones I actually really really liked was Vanessa, Coco, Robin, Sabrina, Lilac and Carmen and im currently still trying to get my hands on them but their still crazy expensive compared to the other general dolls. Looking as this recent decline in quality, I've decided to just get my hands on the specific dolls I like and then never really think about them again lol. Im not a big fan of barbie and bratz so admittedly im a little disappointed with the down fall of rainbows high but I get it.

I’m an adult collector simply because I was a collector as a child who never “outgrew” my dolls or stopped buying or collecting them. I grew up during the Mod & Superstar eras of Barbie (got my first dolls age 2) and wanted the exact same things in dolls back then as I do now- full articulation and a wide variety of well made, fashionable clothing items. I do not understand the argument of “toys need to be dumbed down to appeal to children because they don’t care about articulation or nice clothes” because that sure AF wasn’t true for me. And I preferred clothing over accessories by a wide margin. I could cobble together passable accessories on my own, but my sewing skills as a child were not good enough to make the kinds of nice clothing I could find in stores, and most kids can’t sew like I could at ALL. Kids actually DO know when they are being condescended to with toys but here’s the thing- kids generally do not have the financial power or verbal ability to communicate their unhappiness with dumbed down toys (or aren’t listened to by adults when they do), will just sigh & make do with whatever toys they are gifted with/whatever is available to choose from on store shelves, or (like happened to me once) will feel guilty about complaining about the cheapness/poor quality of a pricy toy they received as a gift or even spent their own limited funds on. I’m always curious about these “focus groups” they use for testing. Are they using kids from the same/similar class, race, economic, gender, and geographical backgrounds or are they making sure to test toys with kids from a much wider/more diverse set of circumstances? Like, kids from upper middle class backgrounds might not care as much about extra clothing because their parents can afford to buy them full doll wardrobes separately, but to a less well off kid that might be the only extra outfit their doll ever gets. And don’t forget that all these big corporations crying “inflation!” to increase their prices are also reporting *record profits*, so it’s basically BS that they keep offering us less for the same/higher price. Lastly, I can’t think of a more stupid corporate decision than to sabotage and kill of a brand that is a HUGE profit maker for the company, especially when sales are down ONLY because the company got greedy and over saturated the market with more new releases than any parent OR collector could ever realistically buy (which forces people to wait for sales/clearance instead of snatching them up right way.) Not only should they be focusing on making a brand sustainable and long lasting (ie Barbie, Hot Wheels), they should be doing it with more than one brand at a time because each one will have a somewhat different target audience (“kids” are not a monolith.)

about the price... RH here in Brazil is NUTS. They're waaaaay to expensive for any average kid to have, like I've never actually see them in my local toy store, only in the high level malls, because they're imported... so the price here is not welcoming to parents to got them! I checked amazon, and the lowest price point was R$350, i compared to US amazon and the same doll (Heather Grayson) that costs US$ 31,99 it's been sold for R$530!! That's like 110 dollars converting, so.... ik it's a problem only for us but if u guys think they're expensive sometimes lolllll And, also because of that I've never seen any child actually owning them, but I already got to see a toddler wainting a MH skulltimate secrets cleo in stores! So they need to expand their international releases, I think with this new bratz they will, because it's a popular brand here too.. and also budget dolls is great for markets like here! the MH exclusive budgets sells like crazy here! every store have them.. so idk maybe Brazil will never get a taste of RH sadly

i've always loved bratz; overjoyed about their resurgence. if we're talking fashion, they're the girls. however, i do think rainbow high dolls have improved vastly as they've produced new collections. the first lines appeared to lack creativity - came across very gimmicky with their monochrome colour schemes. yet, series four charmed me with the introduction of variation in skin-tones, the texture of fabrics, and cultural inspiration. then, shadow high piqued my interest with their outlandish, fantastical appearances, the concept and execution is done beautifully. there is so much attention to detail in their assorted face molds and makeup, and their enchanting glass eyes really set them apart.
@KatAlystsStage
@KatAlystsStage 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, hit the nail right on the head! I think I started getting disillusioned with the brand a little after you. Pacific Coast was too costly, and then Series 4 was a disaster, and that's when I stopped collecting. It's not even just the dolls, the series that went with it was a disaster, and kids deserve better in terms of entertainment. Same with quality control. About 3/4 of the time I'd buy a doll, no matter if she was on clearance or full price, she would come with defects that wouldn't be acceptable for a kid or an adult. Like, if a doll is brand new, I should not be worrying about loose wrists that immediately fall out, paint smears and stains on the body and face, or clothing that is literally falling apart because it wasn't stitched in full. Besides the price point getting more and more ridiculous, the quality control never got better. I would never hand a Rainbow High doll over to a child when some of their pieces were already broken, that's just not acceptable. Like...it makes me upset that the brand was such a mess. And it makes me double upset that people either acted like they could do no wrong or would be extremely unreasonable with their demands. Yeah, the adult collecting space is pretty entitled, especially in this space, it sucks. I don't get the complaining about the accessories from collectors. Like, do you not have fun with your displays? What, you don't wanna put your dolls at a desk and their little sewing machine for fun? I get it, the second outfit was nice, but I never used them (save for saving the shoes for customs since they fit most of G3 of MH, my guilty pleasure). At the end of the day, they're just dolls. They are for adults, and for kids, and they are artful in their own ways. But if MGA is ready to move on, they should. I don't care about Bratz a ton, gonna be honest, and the rest of their doll lines also don't do it for me. I'm happy to not give them my money, fine by me. I'm not 100% pleased with Mattel right now either, they're making some questionable decisions about their prices and quality with Monster High that don't make me happy. But at least with them, I'm not taking off my dolls' clothes to find the bodies stained most of the time. Seriously, make better fabric choices MGA, they're fashion dolls, I should be able to change their clothes without worrying about that.

I appreciated their fun fashions and have bought plenty to dress my MH collection in, and liked that they had big makeup, but I found the dolls themselves extremely unappealing and hated the lack of actual feet. I started buying RH/SH because they took all the things I most loved or wanted in dolls since I was a kid and put them together into one doll line- full articulation, incredibly detailed & fashionable clothing pieces, rainbow hair, fantasy looks. MGA has made the same stupid mistake that Mattel made with g1 Monster High- flooding the market with too many dolls, then panicking dumbing down the line in an attempt to fix the first error, instead of slowing down & better planning their future releases.

Im starting to wonder why anthro dolls like pinkie cooper fail so quickly when theyre so unique? I cant find anyone who talks about the reasons these kinds of dolls fail so its a bit of a mystery 🤔

I agreed with everything you said. I solely bought Shadow High dolls, which WERE gorgeous and top quality, but I always bought them on sale, so besides Zooey, I've never spent full price on RH. They're probably worth it, but money's tight anyway. Personally I think it's a shame to take down such a promising line for Bratz success, even as a Bratz fan myself. I wish they hadn't but here we are. All we can do is spread awareness of industry tactics and move up on about our way, cuz in the end, we're not the target demographic, ever. Unless it's repros or collectors.

This was sooo accurate- when I was little Bratz was getting expensive and my mom would get me Barbie because of the price point and parents don’t care about what’s high quality- they care about what makes their kids happy. At the end of the day that’s truly what it’s all about. 💖

I don’t think MGA was in financial distress, but I do always think MGA’s profit margins were always slimmer than they wanted. The dolls always looked more expensive than what they were charged (even if the price was high). And I imagine the Always Bratz are still much cheaper to make than the original Rainbow High series. Bratz only have one head sculpt, they don’t have to insert eye chips, and they still aren’t bringing back the second outfit. Also in my opinion, Always Bratz aren’t as nice clothing wise as OG Bratz. They used to come with multiple outfits/other pieces to use for the deluxe dolls. Sad that with the brand’s return, they aren’t bringing back that detail ;-; it was my favorite as a kid.

OK so here’s the thing I think when people fail to realize that the dolls main audience are children not collectors and I get the quality and the clothes and the fashions etc. but you gotta also realize like the audience that they’re targeting for don’t really care about stuff like that it’s like. Oh it’s cool doll. It looks cool if that makes sense. Because honestly parents and children are the main audience. These adults are complaining is crazy.

If people are buying the dolls they're allowed to complain. Also let's not pretend like children don't enjoy good quality dolls. They do. They love accessories and outfits. I've seen it so many times. RH just isn't popular anymore. It happens. All dolls have downfalls. Even Barbie had a few flop eras. Either the dolls will have a better year or they will get discontinued. RH is also a newer doll compared to it's competitors. No company is safe from criticism. It's normal for people to complain.

And your Integrity Toys comment didn’t make sense, because most Integrity Toys collectors don’t care about Playline dolls and have made that very clear. Playline dolls do not give you the same effect as an adult collector doll (specifically Integrity Toys). To compare the two is bonkers and anyone can see that. Unfortunately MGA's business model isn't really sustainable. What they do is that to generate hype they shoot themselves in the foot by producing high quality dolls they sell for cheap. Like og rainbow high dolls were what, 25$? And that included two outfits. Sure the dolls got popular and paid themselves back eventually but I imagine it's not the best business model in the long run. As you can see MGA's other big brand LOL OMG is also going downhill

My biggest disappointment with the new Rainbow High is how quickly they went back to straight hair, blue-eyed, light skin dolls. To me, it seemed as if Rainbow High was finally on its way to creating cute designer-esque fashion dolsl that showcased a variety of hair textures and skin complexions. I feel like whenever dolls have darker skin and kinky hair textures, their visual aesthetics and styles are limited to gaudy campy looks - which isn't inherently wrong but it's an issue when dolls of color always have to be the "extra" dolls instead of exploring cute kawaii, frilly, softer pastel looks. I felt like Rainbow High was creating diverse dolls with unique style and personalities. I know RH wasn't perfect when it came to diversity, but it's so upsetting seeing how their reboot that is supposed to appeal to younger audiences is forgetting about darker skinned girls with curly hair. What happened to braids and the textured hairstyles? what happened to giving dolls that are supposed to be black, afrocentric features? The slime stuff sucks but it doesn't even bother me as much as the whitewashing of the brand does. I honestly don't think people cared about Rainbow High until they started being more creative and giving us unique looks and diverse characters.

Speak on it!! Doll lines come and go. Heck most new toys that don't have big media franchises/history don't last long. And those that do, are often "rebooted" or change styles. It's an inevitable conclusion and it's even worse that they're combusting RH and OMG to promote Bratz (especially at a loss of OMG my fav doll brand). Was never fond of RH but I admit that some of the prettiest dolls I've owned are RH/SH. But even then, sometimes I have to take a step back and say to myself "who are these dolls appealing too?". They look pretty no doubt, and the quality was exceptional but they looked far too "collector" to appeal the parents of children. I took a 3D modeling course in college and taking that class made me look at dolls/toys in a more technical view than I did before. In my class, my professor mentioned that's important to make your sculpting so that it children can handle it. While he meant it so that edges wouldn't harm children, I feel like this philosophy can be applied to the entire product as well. RH/SH look amazing but they're not very child-friendly looking at them and sometimes they don't feel that way either(hair gel). Like I mentioned they look like collector dolls and parents are gonna look at them and say "This doesn't look age appropriate for my child". My professor also mentioned the 3D modelers, when creating something that's supposed to be used for the common population, they designed it so that a product wouldn't be viewed as "inhumane" and "uncalley valley" to the person especially when it came to products that re meant to help people such a robots in hospitals. There's a lot of psychology that goes into modeling to make products "friendly" as possible and I feel like that's what RH/SH didn't have. Doll collectors can appreciate it them because we had more exposure dolls, which often times takes inspiration from irl designs. But the fashion world isn't always appreciated by the general public and is ridiculed for not being "normal" or at the very least it doesn't look "fun" unlike MH g3 that has more colorful character designs. I feel like OMG was more successful because it was more "outrageous" as the brand was named whereas the RH/SH can kinda have a "uncanny" effect with their inset eyes, fashion, and makeup (this isn't to say I didn't like it, I love it but at the end of the day are parents gonna accept it?). Speaking of which it also doesn't help that back then, there wasn't a much doll brands as they are now. And with the loss of major toy stores like Toys-R-Us, there's bound to be fierce competition for shelves. And if your product is not selling, then stores aren't gonna order from that brand and clearance. Ik I'm going on a damn essay but I feel like too many people aren't really looking at it from a technical standpoint why MGA is doing the decisions it's doing. Do I agree with it? Absolutely not! RH/SH deserve a better send off but at the end of the day, companies are gonna look at it from a different perspective and if the products needs to be changed to make money, whether it's for building another line or making demographic changes they will not be hesitant to do it. Honestly watching your video has been such a fresh breath of air. I've been in the Transformers fandom and while they have their own drama, the doll community can be so dramatic for the most basic of things(y'all remember when people freaked out over Robin's slumper party hair losing millimeters in later releases in RH?)😭. It's nice to hear from a view that's not so overly charged with dramatization. It's a loss no doubt, but people need to be able to seperate their feelings over a brand when it comes to decisions said brand makes because at the end of the day, we are buying dolls meant for kids therefore the major sales come from the parents of said kids. Unless it's a doll line specifically catered doll collectors, don't be surprised over the compromising decisions they make to ensure the sales profit of a brand. There's sm such that I found myself nodding and agreeing like the accessories! Like a second outfit is nice but if we can't have that, give me a good set of accessories with the doll. I love posing my dolls with accessories because makes them sm much more interactive and stuff like this can be so appealing since they play with them with their imagination. I'm glad the new Bratz has it too and the articulation as well. Personally as much as I love OMG, I'm very excited for the Bratz comeback and I'm kinda hoping OMG slows down too because this has definitely been my wake-up call to be hella more mindful of my doll collecting not so much on money but moreso on the limited space I have. But I'm genuinely excited for the upcoming new Bratz line. They were my dolls back in the day and I'm so happy that a new generation of kids will grew up with them and I'm so curious what the brand will come up with. Maybe we can get some the show characters like the tweevils or Burdine for mass retail...uggh I can't wait seriously.

I really appreciate your analogy! I tend to overthink about a lot of things and when it comes to dolls there is not exception. I’m really into knowing about the plastics, fabrics, the construction of the doll(s) as well as the functionality of the doll(s). Someone in the comments had mentioned that they bought a couple SH dolls for the kids of their camp and those dolls were torn up so fast. Collectors are often more concerned with the visual appeal of the doll (which is understandable) without thinking much of the functionality… as a collector myself of course I admire a doll that is visually appealing to me, however, I love a doll more when I know I don’t necessarily have to worry about breaking them when or if I decide to play with them. My younger cousins and little brother love playing with Bratz dolls because they are easy to play with while being very pretty or “cool” all at the same time. As you basically mentioned too, the RH/SH are just weirdly constructed and are very strange to hold in hand. I will admit though that Bratz should improve the arm articulation for their Alwayz Bratz dolls because the limps are so flimsy and I’m kinda scared I’m going to break them 😭 they also don’t really hold poses very well in my experience.

Monster High reboot was probably somewhere in the planning since 2013. Mattel annual sales reports shows that since 2013 or so MH sales kept plummeting and 2016 reboot was the last attempt at getting a new audience, hoping for better sales. You have some good theories as to why RH articulation is taken away, but as someone in Canada it does not make sense to me. Canada usually gets RH releases pretty shortly after U.S. or even before them sometimes. Bratz on the other hand, since their 20th anniversary, maybe the first edition and rock angelz repro were stocked in Canadian toys r us, but I've have never seen them in person, amazon Canada is only place which has had bratz stocked. I remember for Bratz 2015 reboot, we got eye-catching store displays and probably every single release U.S. had, maybe except the second wave of Study Abroad. Now with people finding the Alwayz Bratz in U.S., the bratz social media has not even made a instagram post about them. I think Alwayz Bratz will be yet another average 20th anniversary release where internationally we'll only have the option to buy them on amazon which, with the amount of variants I've seen, am good honestly. Trying to go back and fourth with all these variants will be hell through online shopping. As for RH soft-reboot, I think this was probably planned somewhere in 2022 concerning low sales of shadow high s1, and then the rainbowvision dolls which were amazing for the price-point, but the price point was definitely out of a lot of parents budget as things were getting normal from covid. But now they have seem to have done really well with SH s2, RH s5, and the color and create dolls. I wish if Bratz really took RH budget, we should have gotten fabric boots and acrylic nail hand molds. It would've elevated bratz and made them so much more modern!

In the U.S. we didn’t get the second wave of Study Abroad either. At least that’s what I heard from other U.S. collectors and I’ve never seen them either. Plus the 2015 Bratz didn’t get much promotion in the U.S. The reason Bratz hasn’t talked about it yet is because I think they are going to be doing a big promotional campaign. Brands have done this before where they don’t talk about what is being released even though people already know about it… it’s very planned, and I also think Bratz is really just waiting for next year to be a fresh start instead of promoting them in late December when they aren’t even supposed to be found right now anyway. Sometimes it happens when collectors find things that aren’t supposed to be out yet. edit: Most time

They did establish their core fan base, and may appeal to those fans once again in the future. Example, Bratz had failed reboots. Yet the 2018 Dolls sparked interest again. And the social media presence with the Bratz challenge and other things. Really helped the company understand where the doll market is headed. And how they can build a newer core fan base for Bratz.

Bratz(to out shine barbie) My scene (to mimic bratz) Barbie sues bratzs, Loses Mattel makes monster high (some people say it copied bratz aside from general appearance i dont see it) Suddenly everyone wants fantasy character dolls. Mga makes novi stars (they make alot of concurrent doll brands) Mga makes brazts for little little kids in an attempt to see if mattel will copy that. Hook line and sinker, 2016 doll crash. Surprize toys become popular, Mga makes lol dolls and poopsie slime surprize. They both somehow metamorphize into competent fashion doll brands. 2018, monster high stops the gag on g2 tests market demand with 2 sets of collector dolls, pennywise and the grady twins. Wildly successful. Mattel devises a new generation of monster high. Really popular, clearly throw back brands are popular. "Unrelated" normalization of "kidults" (adults who buy toys for themselves) Bratz comes back. First as reproductions. Tests well. Now rainbow high is THE main doll brand right now with its crazy quality... too bad, its bratz time, make that shit for little kids.
