The amount of metal some special plants are able to take up from the soil would be toxic enough to an average plant to kill it several times over.

**************
To learn more about this topic, start your googling with these keywords:
- Hyperaccumulator: a plant capable of growing in metalliferous soils and to accumulate extraordinarily high amounts of heavy metals, far in excess of the levels found in the majority of species, without suffering toxic effects
- Phytoremediation: the treatment of pollutants or waste (as in contaminated soil or groundwater) by the use of green plants that remove, degrade, or stabilize the undesirable substances (such as toxic metals)
- Phytomining: the planting (and subsequent harvesting) of vegetation that will selectively concentrate specific metals from the soil into their tissues
- Euhalophytes: highly salt-tolerant plants capable of diluting salt within their succulent leaves or stems
- Active transport: the process of transferring substances against a concentration gradient into, out of, and between cells, using energy

Actually, couldn't plantbending be possible for at least 3 sorts of benders? They absorb carbon and oxygen from the air, so an airbender should be able to handle them, and they also absorb minerals from underground, so an earthbender ought to be able to pull it off as well.

@@WanderTheNomad Wait, does the state of the matter, erm, matter for benders? Like, is a water bender limited to bending liquid water, and incapable of doing anything with ice or water vapour? If not, then why would an airbender be limited to bending air in its gaseous state? (though, then again, I guess if water underwent oxydization, the oxygen atoms which were originally making up the water would make air instead, and be at the whim of airbenders instead of waterbenders, so oxygen and nitrogen would probably be impervious to airbending once they bind to other molecules than other like molecules anyway...)

but most wooden electric guitars are made of alder, basswood, and mahogany, which are common for the guitar bodies themselves. Necks are typically maple or mahogany, and fretboards are typically made from maple, rosewood, and, occasionally, ebony. None of them are the wood or sap from the Pycnandra acuminat, even so, I don't believe it's the wood that contains the metal but rather the leaves and resin. Oh I see.

This opens so many possibilities in genetic engineering: imagine plants that are engineered to absorb specific metals like silver, gold, or platinum as a way to harvest metals environmentally friendly without needing to strip mine the earth!

Yeah, the "genetic engineering is so uNAtural and bAD" mindset is just a pseudoscientific conspiracy-type of mindset that's seriously harming our ability to become more environmentally friendly. Give them about 50 - 100,000 years. Eventually, SOMEONE is going to come up with a way to eat these toxic metal plants without dying. It's like how koalas can eat toxic eucalyptus leaves despite the oils in the plant leaves being toxic enough to kill anything else that tries to eat them.

Would be interesting to test if plants like these can enrich metals in specific isotopes. A Uranium-hoarding plant that is even slightly selective about the isotopes it absorbs would be pretty useful.

My question is is could we somehow genetically modify the tree in order to make different types that take up different metals. So you’ve got a nickel absorbing tree, a copper absorbing tree, an iron absorbing tree, etc. that way, you could practically eliminate mining altogether
