It is NOT more energy efficient to just eat plants, the reason being that herbivores tend to eat plants or parts of plants that humans CANNOT digest, for example a cow can turn 10,000 calories of inedible grass into 1,000 calories if edible beef, or a pig can turn slop into pork, unless you’re feeding the animals food that humans can eat (which VERY rarely happens and only for the most expensive types of meat) the most efficient way to access calories is to feed inedible plants to animals to turn into accessible calories for humans

These are all reasons why eating (and raising) herbivores / omnivores is better than carnivores, but it's pretty much obvious that the main and sole reason for our meat origin preference is availability and lack of difficulty. Chickens, cows, pigs, they all can be domesticated pretty easily. We don't need to protect ourselves from being possibly hunted by our own preys. That's just it. And of course, at some point, people might have hunted a tiger, a lion, or a bear, just to find out that their meat just isn't as tasty. So why all the effort? It's not worth it. To me, that's the whole thing.
