Excellent video. The Platonic philosophy is the basis of all Western thought and religions. When a person experiences authentic spiritual awakening and encounters the Light directly, most of these truths are revealed, thus affirming from direct experience the truth of these principals and teachings.

Thomas Taylor is one of the most interesting scholars there is in my opinion. I have some Platonist leanings so that might be a bit biased, but his work was vital to bring Plato to the English world. Even to this day, he is widely read for his dedication and love of Platonism, and to be honest, the fact that the very few and newer translations of the Platonists are unaffordable for many. This is a really cool video I appreciate your readings of great works of philosophy and esotericism it is a nice change from people speaking about the texts and letting the texts speak for themselves.

Poor Plotinus. Maybe if he'd taken better care of his body and eaten better he wouldn't have been sick so much. Just because the body is imperfect doesn't mean it doesn't deserve care and love from its possessor (imo).

Awesome!! This is such a surprise contribution to this collaboration. How interesting, and dialectically refreshing, to see someone actually refer to Thomas Taylor, a classicist with a strong mystical bent who was subsequently shadowed by the more academic F.M. Cornford. A significant number of Taylor’s writings are available through the Prometheus Trust, for those interested.

i am a citizen of the world. i observe, learn, interact, and experience this world through my senses. i walk the path of virtue and embody my philosophy. i believe in and honor the old gods. the gods of plato, socrates, and Aristotle. the gods of Pericles, Alexander, and Leonidas. the gods who illuminate the cosmos and give purpose to all things. i do my best to live righteous and honorable. my enemies are corporeal vices and irrational impulses. my allies are virtue, stoicism, and sound judgment. i maintain my body, mind, and spirit. through exercise, studies, and prayer. i revere nature and its divine beauty. i respect all living things. i honor my ancestors and their traditions. i will always be grateful for what the fates give and take away. i am committed to the never-ending pursuit of virtue. Wisdom, Justice, Courage, Piety and temperance are my pillars. i am a defender of freedom and democracy. i remain steadfast in these beliefs. I will live my life accordingly. until my time comes to pay the ferryman, i will uphold this sacred way of life. For i am a citizen of the world.

Thank you! It is a benefit to me that you have transmitted Thomas Taylor's Platonic Creed, previously unknown to me. I have downloaded a pdf to contemplate it further. As a follower of a monist spiritual tradition developed in India ("Pratyabhijna" of the Kashmiri philosopher Utpaladeva), I am keen to study a philosophical summary such as this.

Great reading as always Mr. Atrell. I have one question, it seems that Taylor has no problem of having multiple divine entities in his cosmology, given his Christianity does Taylor see such entities as the intelligible Gods and others as simply angels or does Taylor hold that his affirmation of a totalizing divine first principle makes him some kind of ur-monotheist whose God has multiple names yet is ultimately one?

Monism isn’t monotheism (in fact, Christian doctrine explicitly rejects it), and no, the Henads aren’t the Monad, but rather emanations of it above the Nous.

I thought the video said that he was criticizing the Christian creed(s) for being inadequate, and given that this creed explicitly mentions multiple gods in a couple of places, I conclude that he wasn’t a Christian.

Reality = That which is. That which is, that is nothing in particular (actual), is by definition everything in general (potential). God = Creative Intelligence. Creative Intelligence is omnipresent. We are all It, to an unknowable/inexhaustible extent, as the facets of a Diamond are 'both' distinct from each other 'and' the Diamond itself. Love is the recognition of our shared. Being. What appears as separate and opposite, is in Reality - Continuum.

If only essentialist forms of thought like that of this (beautiful) Creed could lead to something that isn't intrinsically reactionary...
@MrPSaun

Please elaborate on why you think this.
@orfeotracio
@orfeotracio Жыл бұрын
@@MrPSaun If the Good and the Beautiful exist in essentia there are only two solutions 1. Blind acceptance of everything since everything partakes in the Good (inhuman simplistic mysticism) 2. Discrimination between what is Good and what s not, which becomes, in turn, less worthy (discriminational essentialism) Unfortunately, in the kind of "platonic" perennialism advocated by seeker of unity & co (not dr Sledge I have to say) there is no space for authentic pluralism. It's only a dangerous night filled with very seductive black cows

Talking about essences is always tricky. Thinking in terms of structure and function is better imo. Don't think of sufficient and necessary conditions. Watch the verveke video for phenomenological reading of Plato. The main contention would be that the one can be experienced but not spoken about. I agree with you if there is no contact then the concept is meaningless.

Wow. Jahm bin Safwan would delight in this creed. Transcendent this and transcendent that. Ineffable this ineffable that. Silence this silence that. Superessential and incorporeal? Almost like we reduced God (the principle of all principles) to something that doesn’t actually exist.
