Arthur C. Clarke wrote a similar story called “Technical Error” in 1950. It involved a generator in a power station. It involved a worker who was inside the workings of the pit of a turbine shaft. Unexpectedly, the current surge rose to a maximum, tried to stabilize itself, and couldn’t quite manage it. Afterwards, they found the man who seemed unharmed - at first. Every organ in his body had been reversed, and so a similar story, but nothing to do with other universes. Very similar, though. I guess mankind has now lived so long that all our stories are basically old ideas, dressed up as new. It’s amazing how many stories I come across fit that thought.

Many of this particular genre seem to go back to Wells, time travel in particular was first written about by Wells, but many others stories seem to have a base in 19th century authors.

Yes, good shout👍😉 That is why i love Sci Fi. There are possibilities for new variations on age old themes. Kurt Vonnegut put it like this in Slaughterhouse 5 [Rosewater said an interesting thing to Billy one time about a book that wasn't science fiction. He said that everything there was to know about life was in The Brothers Karazamov, by Fyodor Dostoevsky. "But that isn't enough anymore"]

Good to remind yourself exactly when this was written,many,many similar stories that came afterwards I can only think that Wells had a profound effect on this genre. Have read so many stories obviously influenced by Wells.

This is a story about what can Happen if you teach chemistry, without knowing anything about chemistry. Haha. But seriously this is Very "modern" story, considering that it is from 1896. It is About parallel universes. Wells is a truly extraordinary writer. Very Visionary.

Wells' shorts, such as this, are far more imaginative than his novels
@ecouturehandmades51663 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it was because many of his shorts were written under deadlines. Take an idea, run a quick essay on it and not flesh it out for a full novel length story. Not that this tale isn't full...

I love this story. I am a huge HP Lovecraft fan and have devoured his canon of works and searched for other like writings with much disappointment. Lovecraft is Lovecraft after all. The Crystal Egg is another 'Lovecraftian' story by HG Wells that I enjoyed.

I agree tampaseahawk. It's hard to find a satisfactory replacement for lovecraft. But there are a few stories and authors who come surprisingly close.

Like this story! Maybe the earliest attempt at describing being in a 4th dimension with a glimpse into the 'spirit world', a place of great interest to many (e.g. Arthur Conan Doyle) at the time.

Sort of like a mix of Lovecraft, Castaneda, and Tibetan book of the dead. I've had dream/hypnogogic experiences similar to this so it makes me think this may be based on real experience. Not the explosion part. Just the otherworldly part. Sometimes dreams seem like more than dreams. Either way, it's certainly real to you when it happens to you!

otter rivers Be careful with these type of experiences each time you open yourself up to one of the spirits have a little more authority over your soul this lucid state of dreaming is very dangerous

Green powder as in C.S. Lewis magicians nephew. The scene is reminiscent of an episode of the outer limits called Borderlands where one of the scientists right hand becomes another left. Even though these stories came from different imaginations it would still be cool to another and document them.
