What a sad and beautiful story, It reads like a prophecy for World War 2 or even wars to come and the future of the 20th century. Wells describes through his narrator guided missiles and warplanes, though the first plane had not even flown in 1901 when Wells penned this great story.

Wells knew of the plans for our future ,they have been unfolding for over 100 years. Transhumanism is the endgame for our technocrat, soulless rulers.

Interesting 😊. I’ve always been curious about dreams and what they mean to you. H.G. Wells is a brilliant author. A simply beautiful story

What a short story. Beautiful in Its own unique way, It is also a warning about the use of weapons of mass destruction and the inhumanity of that. have "never been tested or never used". Because of their all destroying, all consuming potential. This story is almost prophetic in Its prediction of mankind's ability to make more and more "sophisticated" deadly, nuclear weapons. This tale is one of Wells best short stories. and disturbing at the same time. Let us Hope that nuclear weapons are never deployed again. In war. Another theme is Dreams and their meaning.

In 1948 the producers of Escape (the classic radio series) bravely took on this story. They actually did a pretty good job.

I wonder if he later did a bit of re-writing on this one (as he often did). His use of "plane" or "airplanes" (I think I heard that correctly) would've been pretty unlikely in 1901 when he wrote this. Wells had previously used other words whenever he'd referred to heavier than air flying machines.

If anybody wants more of this idea of dreaming into a different time/space there is a movie called Your Name that this reminded me of

Moral? It doesn't end well, if a person shirks the duty of preserving peace in place of pleasure and the pursuit of happiness.

If ever a book was designed to be read and not listened to. Or maybe it's just the quality of the narration.

A bit of constructive criticism, if you please. A bit more acting out, variation in voice inflection and pauses etc are required. Its a bit too monotone....

Very well written. But the guy’s dream sounds like an adolescent fantasy of a man in the throes of a midlife crisis who is bored with his wife.
