Really appreciate this. I'm American, and don't know the intricacies of the game, but your explanation was very clear. I was so afraid you were going to blame Frawley. The drop goal would have made him the hero, but missing it is not what cost Leinster the game.

Excellent Analysis However this surely is not where Leinster lost the match. Turning down 4 kickable penalties when dominating both territory and possession was surely where this epic was lost All the while watching Toulouse add points from each and every penalty awarded them

On point ! Leinster made many avoidable mistakes in extra time probably because they were exhausted, chasing the score all game and putting so much effort into it.

On the French side of forensic analysis, the second try attempt, the one Larmour tackled brilliantly, has been dissected and showed a big decision error from Lebel: he could have passed to his inside, Roumat was there whithout any oppo close enough to stop him. Tunnel vision. Normally he his more clear headed. I would say that Leinster style od play is like classical music, excellent for rehearsed pieces, Toulouse style is more like Jazz, with 4 or 5 players who can improvise and the others to follow instantly.

Toulouse won 2023 Top 14 final vs La Rochelle almost at the last minute with a similar mistake by La Rochelle... Leinster could not imagine that Toulouse could have been so good in defending their line when Toulouse is mostly known for its attacking flair. Nienaber is maybe a good defence advisor but not sure who was in charge of the irish attack last Saturday. Toulouse is able to create the danger almost from nothing and Mallia and Lebel could have scored 2 beautiful tries should they have had smaller feet or shoes... It was a great game because there were 2 great teams on the ground. Congrats to both of them !

Toulouse here : from my pov, the main issue of leinster is that they did not adapt their tactic. Always the same tactic that didn't work on this game, not kicking penalties to take de lead. The difference is that Toulouse was massive in defense, and it is not usual for this team. Bur nobody has to blame leinster, if the drop goal was successful, all the commentaries I read will be opposite.

Excellent analysis clearly describing events and their consequences but not, in my opinion, the moment that Leinster lost the game. From this position Leinster looked in trouble but still in touch, knowing that Lowe would return and not yet doomed .That came in the second period after Arnold's dismissal when a scrambled lineout saw Leinster win a scrappy ball at the back and inexplicably pass it to an isolated Cian Healey. He was tackled, had no option other than to hang on hoping for support (that was too far away to help) and be penalised. The subsequent Ramos penalty put Toulouse 2 scores ahead and that, I think, was the moment that decided the match.

Discipline failing to protect the breakdown, support play lazy at least, the breakdown was fought hard by Toulouse and won most of the time, stealing the ball, Leinster tried hard but tactics not good on the day, I cant understand why the coaches did not tell them take 3 points?????? So to my province come on Munster. There is always next year hopefully lessons learnt. Love watching Munster and Leinster playing.

Larmour did this a couple of times during the game. Clearly hasn't bought into the system entirely. He wasn't necessarily wrong to shoot up, but if you are going to you need to fully commit and make the tackle on Ramos (or at least get in between the passing lines of Ramos to Chocobares)

Lama and Conan overcommit because Leinster were down to 14 players and were too worried about being stretched to recognise the attack wasn’t that threatening if they drift. Hanshaw knows it can be contained until the guys around him loose their cool pretty much for the only time in the match.

I know the Leinster haters will probably say that we are making excuses but I wasn't surprised that we lost. Our form has been patchy for most of the year and the malaise seems to have spread to the wider squad with the poor performances in South Africa and against Ulster. I think the departures of Sexton and Lancaster have had a big impact. Also when you consider that both new defense and attack coaches were away at the world cup and didn't have a proper pre-season it is hardly surprising that things have gone backward a bit, particularly the attack. However, I think next year things should be more stable and we will have a fresh infusion of new players and a more settled coaching staff things should get better.

He’s been there 7 months! He’s won two Rwc on the bounce. No coach can have such a quick impact, just look at borthwick🤣🤣🤣🤣. Lancaster was the problem, he’s not a winner. Just watch Racing over the next two seasons. Byrne isn’t a good 10, the Irish will say he is, but he isn’t. Where’s Joey now? Second choice at Munster and about to be second choice in France. 10 is a big problem for Leinster. Leinster/ireland should take “being on the legal limit “ out of their game, it’s stopping them concentrating on playing rugby. Carley was up their asses all first half and it crippled them, as happened in the quarter final last year.

Nah, your attack just got found out, you play the same fuckijg moves over and over again which is basically obstruction play but teams figured you out. Nienaber has won world cuos and never bottled..but he inherited a squad at Leinster who have players that have choked world cups after world cups, Champions cup after champions cup and they choke in tight games. Nienaber is not used to working with frauds. Against a good defence, your attack is mediocre, rehearsed backline moves wont save you against a team who can absorb pressure. Leinster dont really attack like NZ and SA that is free flowing, everything is systematic and drilled training ground moves, it wont work when you are on the backfoot. You need individual world class players who can step up anf win you a game...and your best player Gibso-Park is not thay guy😂

I find it almost insulting that most of the English speaking commentators take the angle of « why Leinster lost ». Since the competition started, Toulouse is the team with the most titles. And this season, I think Toulouse was the most impressive team in the champions cup. So i think the question should be "what made toulouse win".

That wasn't the moment Leinster lost the game though it contributed, there was an accumulation of moments. I'm not convinced if Nienaber's system suits all the Leinster players whose DNA is being an attacking team. They had so much of Lancaster's attacking ways it won't switch in a season and we don't really want it to switch to a defensive game. He hasn't been at the club for a full season yet. Jordan Larmour's and Conan's instincts told them something else in that defensive situation to what Nienaber is coaching and they are trying hard to fit this new defence into their game but at what cost? I think the team is caught in no man's land moving from a world class attacking coach who also worked defence to moving to the opposite end of the game in a world class defensive coach. I don't think its working for backs with attacking instincts.

Was the final pass forward (have seen other pics that shows this even more so)? Also was the challenge on Frawley an off ball foul or accident? It happened in front of me but everything happened so fast I don’t know. What ever way you analyse it Leinster had only 13 standing. I do agree with you that this try was the pivotal moment. It was an epic contest. (I have never seen many post match pieces for a game - a tribute to the quality of the contest and both teams).

This is an excellent analysis and it highlights the fact that the defence must not be totally rigid, but must sometimes adjust slightly to contain the attacking threat. As you say all is lost when Larmour does a complete 360 degree turn. He has contributed nothing to the defensive effort and has put his fellow defenders in an impossible position. Neinaber has to take responsibility for this. Leinster must surely have trained for scenarios like this. So the players are responsible but not necessarily to blame.

Great analysis, thank you! I can’t help to think that Leinster lost again due to an excessive confidence in their abilities to get a try from the corner. IMHO They made the same mistake again that lost them the final against La Rochelle which is to go to the corner when they get a penalty vs taking the 3 points. This final, they tried 3 times to score a try and ended up behind almost the entire match, meanwhile Toulouse takes 3 points after 3 points. It was Hugo Mola’s plan all along and it always pays off since Toulouse always scores tries at the end of a match. Pragmatism wins. Maybe having Barrett’s boot next season will be a game changer… if they take the points I bet it will! Thanks again for a great analysis. Rugby is our passion and what an amazing sport! Google for " Breakdown Laws - Dos and Don'ts " Sheahan should not pass from the ground when he was still, Kinghorn should not hold him anymore. Sheahan should leave the ball, so as soon as the ref saw him protecting the ball from Dupont's grip, even for one second = foul.

Maybe but once they decided to go to touch, they needed to get as close to the 5 yard line as possible - Byrne never made it easy for his team on that count, consistently barely making it to their 22. Good analysis. Although I think Henshaw gets off a bit easily in your summation. I agree that a more pragmatic approach saves Leinster here but as the lynchpin at 13 Henshaw would have to make the call not to rush. He clearly doesn't make that call judging by the actions of Conan and Larmour, yet he sits off himself which creates this massive disconnect. Larmour as you rightly point out makes a bad situation worse but in many respects he's made to look foolish by a situation that Henshaw is responsible for.

Leinster lost on small details, and above all it was Toulouse who won thanks to the adaptation. Leinster's forwards were stronger and Dupond had trouble sending in his usual game, so he changed registers, went into defense mode and played very simply, relying on Ntamack. Dupont didn't make the big breakthrough he's used to because the Leinster defenders took him on every time, so he adapted, and that's where Leinster's problem is that they keep playing their game over and over again even when it doesn't go their way. I think Toulouse have more rugby intelligence and can therefore adapt to their opponents' game!

Pass looks a bit forward, but hey some days you just don’t get the breaks. A Try disallowed were it could just as easily been interpreted as ripped back instead of knocked forward. A couple of offences that might on another day drawn a card in the first half, like Willis’s upright no arms tackle on Dorris, or that clumsy single handed intercept under pressure and A narrowly missed drop to win in normal time. Leinster will bounce back, great teams alway do.

Hi all. I watched so many YT reviews talking about IF Leinster has done this or IF Leinster has done that or if the drop goal was in and so....The fact can be also that Toulouse has just countered Leinster plans. We agree that with "IFS", we can remake the world. Do not get me wrong, Leinster could have won the game however Toulouse is very clinical and make the most of every mistake of the opponent. Do not forget that playing in the Top 14 means playing an European championship match every weekend. To conclude, I'd just like to highlight Stade Toulousain's performance and not just blame Leinster's performance. I follow Stade Toulousain regularly, and I have to admit that this year's team is virtually unplayable.

Ref won it for Toulouse binning Lowe so Toulouse had the space to score. Still can't see the forward pass to deny Lowes try either.

Well the yellow card lost them the game and Carley being inept. Missing shots to the head in the first half on Leinster players and not penalising a more egregious slap down by a Toulouse player. I hope I never see him officiate a game again in my life. He was a total disgrace to the game.

The play that decided the game was when the Toulouse no 16 Matt Carley chalked off the James Lowe try for a knock on which didn't happen.

Your comment is so salty that it alone exceeds the annual production of salt of Guérande. 😮

Pinged Leinster all through the first half for so many things but let Toulouse away with a Leinster player in the head lock at one point. Definitely a close game but feel the ref was biased, so did the English I was watching it with

leinster rugby aswell as irish rugby is boring as fuck to look at, and im pretty sure to play against. Im glad teams are adapting to their nonsense rugby style which is shameful. Almost not rugby at all.
