Personally, I really like the “one ending” idea because if the normal and weird route pattern continues, it will be really cool to see how they end up at the same spot. And it makes me think that whatever happens at the end will have an entirely contextual meaning/effect corresponding to the route. It’s a monkey’s paw promise, one ending could have totally different implications predicated on what happened before

My theory is about Kris rejecting the player's control regardless of how kind you try to be. In the weird route I certainly think Kris is going to reject the player's control as well. But like you said the context will ultimately be different.

Back when Undertale was new, I remember people coming to the conclusion that the player was bad by virtue of playing the game, even though Toby acknowledged that its a little hypocritical to create a game and then call someone horrible for wanting to play that game (back when he made the Earthbound Halloween hack). I don't think that the player is bad for playing. Its whomever edited the story to shove the player into Kris instead of the vessel.

Spec Ops: The Line is a good example of that. Still, if Kris tracked what choices we made, and if they matched what they wanted to say themself (like bringing Susie to the carnival, or saying No after Smapton Neo) that could be a way of discriminating between "ha ha game go brrr" players and "Look dude, if there was an autopilot button I'd let you play but if I'm not playing your world is paused forever. That reminds me of a theory that I came up with because of one of Vivat Veritas’s videos. Based on thematic parallels with Undertale, my idea was that we would probably get to leave Kris alone and take over the Vessel after a full mercy ending, and that we would somehow destroy the Vessel permanently if we ever played the weird route to completion (ruining any future mercy endings, just like completing an obliteration route in undertale).
@PlayerCarter.9 ай бұрын

I personally think that it's gonna be a Fire Emblem situation, where the text or preceding scenes describing fates of characters will differ completely, but I also want values for Communicating with Kris. That if we reload back and pick the choices that Kris wanted to pick, they would at some point greet their teeth and start cooperating with us. Highlighting choices they want, telling us when to let them do something, stuff like that. That could lead to a way less traumatic version of the ending, methinks. (Or more, if Toby implements a Betrayal method) 4:41 It is very likely that we will be destroyed down the line of that happens as well. Toby has the final cutscene planned since back in August, 2011. I would doubt that the Vessel is present. It's more likely that Susie and Kris are. Many changes happened since, so I wonder how close it will be to that dream.

I find myself thinking of the relationship between Kris, The Player, and the world of Deltarune as being akin to Plato's "Allegory of the Cave". In an interest in interacting with (and dare I say, BELONGING to), Kris' World, we interpret the sprites and Kris' (Unwilling) Observations and use those things to form an understanding of Deltarune. But this understanding is inherently flawed; Kris and all the other characters see the world of Deltarune as it truly is - they live there. We can only interpret the shadows on the wall that Kris gives us, that is as close to "Deltarune's reality" we can get. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, I wonder what'll happen when Kris gets fed up of giving us shadows?

I really hope "the player is bad" isn't where the story ends up going. It'd be banal and boring, plus it's just stupid for games to guilt the player for something the writers decided long before you even picked up the controller. I do think Deltarune is trying to make you think about such things, but I don't believe it'll try to pull that specific plot point as some kind of twist - it's practically revealed at the end of chapter 1, after all. There's something odd about how Kris behaves. They can pull the SOUL out, but only do so at very specific moments, and seem to be prepared for those moments, like the birdcage. And they keep going with opening the dark world at home even after the Snowgrave route, so the decision to do that doesn't seem to be based on an impulsive "I had so much fun with Susie, let's do that some more". It's like they know what's going to happen. Fun fact: Right at the beginning where we currently get "Your - name - is - ..." from maybe-Chara, there's some unused content of Susie saying "Kris...! Wake up! KRIS...!", which wouldn't make much sense if it was just a dream Kris was having or something, since the two hadn't become friends yet. Unless... unless there's some kind of time loop plot twist. Maybe some kind of RESET? Kris did have their own save file, after all. Personally I think Deltarune's plot is going to be something *very* different from what we are expecting. The elements of player control and reality vs fantasy are certainly going to be present, but not the big twist that made Toby determined to make a game out of that fever dream.
@PlayerCarter.9 ай бұрын
I get where you're coming from with "the player is bad" being a bad twist. Though what I think makes it good is that it sits on a fine line between the dissatisfaction of a predetermined ending and being caught off guard for your negligent actions. This is because while the ending does happen regardless to your actions (which connects well to your choices dont matter), it also happens because you're caught up in the fun of playing the game that you forget Kris is suffering every second you play it. From the way I see it, its rather sobering, giving a twist similar to what early players of Undertale felt when they were held accountable for playing it like any other rpg. Which is what I think is at least a part of what Toby Fox ultimately wants Deltarune to achieve
@GamingDragon2219 ай бұрын

Some fans are really pushing the narrative that Kris is a helpless victim, and player is a manifestation of everything that's evil. But why would anyone play the game where the best outcome is not to play? Why would anyone play the game where you HAVE to follow some script hallucinated by some fanatics, even though the game provides you with options to play how you want it?.. YOU are the character within the world of Deltarune, too, and you can't have the happy ending if YOU are unhappy. Ultimately, it is more honest to play as yourself, instead of mindlessly imitating the version of Kris that you dreamed-up and lying to everyone by doing that. Not to mention [Big Shot] is OUR power, not Kris'. Fountain can be closed with OUR power, not Kris'. GAME OVER screen clearly shows us the outcome of stopping playing: eternal darkness. MC clearly either wants or needs the SOUL, both variants shows that continuing playing is in the best interests of everyone. So no, you are not the saint by deliberately skipping Chapter 1. Kris is not free just because you haven't touched your keyboard.

You technically don't have to apologize, forgiveness can be optional with an event like the Roaring. In RPGs the horrific event almost always becomes reality and it is up to you to stop it, saving those who remain is a big enough excuse to work together. Similarly since the Player is used to seal stuff it is possible our use in sealing also seals us off from the world. Two birds with one stone effectively.
@PlayerCarter.9 ай бұрын
In a fully pacifist route Kris would only reject the player's control because they're blinded by hatred or something, likely to do with Asriel or Ralsei. While I do think bringing back the Vessel is the easiest solution and maybe even the most likely, I still think it would be an odd choice narratively to say "Kris is not a blank slate protagonist and overriding their will is bad: even if you had no choice and did everything in your power to help them." And then immediately after that, we are given a new vessel to control and told "don't worry guys, this time the vessel is 100% unfeeling and is a perfect blank slate. Don't feel any conflict over possesing this one." The questions in the Goner Maker seem to imply that the vessel is a living, breathing being distinct from the player. The "It will not hear" line is what really makes me think that. So while the vessel idea is very likely and is supported by evidence, I think that the thematic part of the story would land much better if either we don't possess the vessel at all, or the vessel is still treated as distinct from us in a way similar to Kris. If I may write speculative fan fiction, I would like to see Kris directly communicate with us and allow a sort of truce to be formed. Maybe they need us to close the Fountains and save the world, but they expect us to end the connection when the world is saved(facilitated by reaching the end credits). This could even work in a Weird Route and still be mostly the same. If we were nice, Kris might be slightly more understanding and that will give us more time to view the world through Kris before the end credits end the connection. But in the Weird Route, Kris can be much more vindictive and aggressive towards us and make the final leg of the journey much harder and give us less of an emotional connection to the world. They might need us to save everyone, but they would still hate our guts
@PlayerCarter.9 ай бұрын
It certainly is possible that the vessel is their own individual as well. Though it would likely have the same effect of it being at least better than controlling Kris, as the vessel's whole purpose, sentient or not, is to well be a vessel for the player.

Maybe small changes depending on whether you were Nice (Spared Darkners) or Rude (fought Darkners until they fled), but the Normal Route will be "The One Ending." But what about the Weird Route? The one in which the player intentionally acts in ways to break the established story? I think that the Weird Route will be shorter, as whoever is in charge of the narrative (Probably Gaster, but that's merely speculation) Will simply *stop* the game after you've so thoroughly ruined everything. This is *not* an ending, but rather the narrative punishing the player for being Determined enough to ruin everything without remorse. You don't get to see the ending. You jerk.

I very much should have covered the weird route in the video. I gave an answer in a community post if you'd like my explanation.

What if The Vessel will be the Final Boss? Or maybe it would be Kris and your the game’s Final Boss.

there's a flaw in this theory, and... well, every other theory where player possession is a big part: it runs on the assumption that player possession is actually canon. i know that a lot of theories run on assumptions, and ther'es nothing exactly wrong with that, but when you treat it as canon, there are gonna be problems. remember. it's really likely to be a core premise of deltarune, but it's not 100% likely to happen. those are two different things

Its not a flaw though, from the intro the "Player" as we call the Red Soul is quickly established to not be Kris. Even so far as with the chapter 2 bonus boss fight pushing the idea that Kris can't cut the strings because they would die. Given how things are 1:1 in their species from UT to DR this only further enforces what is established. We've all but had it directly said at this point, a major shift in this would be incredibly dangerous.

I guess you could say its head canon, but given Gaster's diegetic communication to us the player across our world (when Deltarune was announced on twitter) and the game's world (goner maker) I'm whiling to stand by it.

Deltarune actually has 2 endings as of now and I suspect that the total amount will be 7-8. The current endings are the chapter 1 ending, and chapter 2 ending. Like subscribe and share this video if gaster makes you hard

I've never read it, I just saw people remixing penumbra phantasm for Deltarune so I used it.
