I'm someone who had a pet rat as a young child, I'd carry her, walk around with her on my shoulder, she was really friendly and a great little pet for someone who couldnt have a dog for financial reasons. She was also from a pet store. But I would never, EVER, in a million years touch or attempt to pick up a rat from the subway, an alley, the forest, or anywhere ever. That's insane. They also have a generally short lifespan, even if kept as a pet. Sincerely, someone who grew up with pet rats, lived in the country, and has a soft spot for misunderstood animals. Same pretty much applies to opossums, except they are amazing for the environment (generally not aggressive, they just hiss out of fear. If they feel threatened too much, they’ll play dead).
