I feel as if he actually loves the people he is discussing even when he strongly disagrees with them. It really makes me appreciate the subject more hearing the excitement in his voice.

@38:50 and some minutes before. A very good explanation of the division of labour between Philosophy and Science regarding the nature of consciousness. Explains what Philosophy can say about consciousness and what is left for Physics/Biology/Psychology to explain. We don't have to know HOW consciousness works or exactly WHAT it is constructed of to say certain philosophical things about it. Philosophy says: 1) consciousness is not reducible to matter as we now know it. it has its own characteristics and its own method of being known and it is as real a phenomenon as external physical matter 2) the conclusions of consciousness are efficacious, they have effects on the actual behaviour of conscious entities 3) consciousness is in the human case, volitional

These atomists in BC 400 without microscopes managed to get pretty close to what we teach in chemistry class in the 21st century. Outside of nuclear fission or fusion, the idea that atoms just rearrange is pretty close.

Is this material determinism the same philosophy Danial Dennett holds?

He also says consciousness is an illusion but hasn’t been challenged with the ostensive definition.
