The word pogrom stems from the verb gromit' (громить) that means to crush (strike & destroy in one word). And there are quite a few verbs based on this stem. So pogrom means destruction. Similar to the Hebrew word usually used in this context: שמד (shmad - destruction, extermination). Thunder (grom) may be related but the verb for thunder is not gromit' but gremet' (греметь), so the connection is not simple and direct.

When you start analyzing events, you realize why so many young Jews of that time became revolutionary. Rebelled against Tsarist Envy or similar. Unfortunately for them, things did not improve even with the bolsheviks took power. The Russians always need someone to blame if the is no water in the tap. (:

I came to a dead end with my 2nd great grandfather who came from Poland/Russia (different documents say different things) with no records of his parents on any documents. I am wondering if he parents were lost in the pogroms?

I have a question can a Jewish family from Eastern Europe such as Poland, Ukraine,Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe, can possibly have a little bit of Mongolian blood due to the history of Mongolian presence being in Russia at the time of the expansion of the Mongolian horde my great grandfather said we had a little Mongolian ancestry could it be possible to make such claim?1 second ago•

Shalom Rabbi Abramson. The video was very illuminating. Thouh I'd like to know how my paternal Grt Grandparents came to make secret My name, Dannan. Sometime in the late 19th century upon their arrival in the U.K. My Maternal family found refuge in Ireland from the inquisition during the 16th century. My Paternal side is more of a mystery. Nobody seams to know anything, outside of the secrecy surrounding the hidden name which is revealed upon reaching aged 8. Ive repeated the tradition with my own offspring, with the relevency a parrott might feel. Ive drawn a blank so far. I wondered if You have any pointers for me please.
