My life's favourite memory features the Pogues, albeit indirectly. I was lost in Amsterdam and stumbled across an Irish pub. I wasn't sure about going in, it was too dark inside to see how busy it was and stuff, but a dude was standing by the door who was ridiculously friendly and welcoming and said it's a nice place, so I went in, sat in a corner of this dark as hell bar, drinking an Irish coffee while the Pogues blasted from the stereo. I've never known peace quite like it

Reminds me a little of how the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, a bunch of California longhairs, was embraced in the early '70s by a bunch of super old school country singers, because those California boys had the chops (check out "Soldier's Joy" from the first "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album. What a difference in styles . The Dubliners are lively performers, and the Pogues basically a punk band emotionless, wooden and scowling. Other than doubling the speed, I don't see the Pogues doing anything new. If I can't find an older group like the Dubliners, I listen to Newfie music which has not deteriorated like the Pogues style.
@tomjeffersonwasright22889 жыл бұрын
Been listening to them about 12 years or more. Playing double time doesn't impress me. I can pick banjo way faster than any of them do. But it is putting feeling into the music that counts, not speed. Look at the singers dead face, hands in pockets. How cool. How punk. How BORING ! ! !
@odd-runekolaster20739 жыл бұрын
tom jackson You're boring..
@TheJayman2139 жыл бұрын
tom jackson Ronnie has his hands in his pocket also. Of the two Shane was the only one to notably vary the dynamics of his singing, the only one to be seated is a Dubliner and the only one to stick his tongue out is a Pogue. If one of the groups is more lively than the other, it's the Pogues.
@helenaville59399 жыл бұрын
tom jackson It's not a competition. They are two very different bands with two very different styles. That's why this works so well. It's the meeting of opposites. It reminds me how the Irish are. No matter how far they travel from their homeland, no matter how many generations pass, and no matter what lifestyle they live, they still feel this common bond with one another that resides deep in the soul. These two very different bands, from different generations are a wonderful reminder that differences don't matter, it's what's deep in the soul that matters and that's what binds the Irish together and always will.

Shane Macgowan I honestly like the guy and he is a great musician and makes songs really good even though he's not what you would call an a good singer. But...actual rats are more attractive and that just has to be said.
