I think there will be a new "class" of TCG collectibles. There will now be "sealed predetermined packs", and I think someday, grading companies (like PSA) will partner with CT scanners (perhaps using some blockchain for verification). That will put a premium price on sealed Charizard packs, Blastoise packs, etc. But the cards people don't want as much will lose a little bit of value. The immediate market impact will be on the ulta high end products (like the $20,000 1st edition sealed packs, which I think will go down in value). In the future, we'll see Dubai millionaires have a full collection of base set sealed packs of the entire set. Imagine that...

I think it could work if the x-ray company was required to put a special non-removable sticker on the product. This would protect buyers because they would know the pack or box was scanned and request the scan data, and if the holo turned out to be a less valuable one it would drastically decrease the price of the vintage pack, still making it a gamble for the seller to scan them.
@shinygiveaways19203 ай бұрын
Would be kinda fucked up though since if you send in a pack and there is nothing in it, the sticker would ruin the value for sealed collectors.

If you buy his story that he planned on patenting the tech and not allowing anyone to use it. I think the novelty of the technology, being able to see such tiny specific detail on a CT scanner is amazing and would do absolute wonders in the medical field specifically. Using pokemon cards as just an example of one application of this tech or as a demonstration of its capabilities is enough for me, and I definitely don't think it should (or even will) become common practice for collectables
@Mert-716Ай бұрын
It's likely that someone else mentioned this but if not, the trading card companies simply need to start using anti x-ray material in their packaging. This material has been in use for a long time to prevent the post office from x-raying items that could be damaged by x-ray. It would add a bit to the cost of goods involved in manufacturing a pack, but that increase would negligible.

Im going to be honest, this is probably the most checkmate esc, situation. I dont know if trading cards can survive in the long term or even be treated as a hobby anymore to indulge in opening packs. All cards including extremely rare cards would lose some value. Not to mean a 1st edition charizard would drop to zero but it would probably lose 25% of its value. Also this would make the future of vintage card collecting provide no growth as an investment. Meaning I dont think it would be possible for vintage packs to appreciate further if this technology is utilized openly. Essentially the only openable packs would be modern/cheaper end modern. If large or even mid tier sellers across the world get access to using this technology or even outsourcing it to others then its game over for the long term of opening/investing in mid/expensive sets.

I think your point Ando on verifying if there really are the right cards in there makes sense. However if you owned a $300,000 box of cards, you would probably verify in person and maybe find out if theres a charizard in there before selling it if that makes sense. I think later down the line when someone could get a homemade one of these machines or something similar that is more accessible, the vintage collecting scene is going to change for the worse. Probably not for another 20 years or ever though.

Hello Ct scanners use xrays in like all directions to make a 3d image packs or cards will not have a discolorstion, i dont know what settings they use, but probably same exposure as flying a plane once or twice The xrays are there for microseconds, the better the detector the less time it needs to collect an image, however possibly they run it bit longer to get a stronger signal and possibly more resolution Geiger counters, dosimeters or other radiation meters will NOT detect whether a pack was scanned or not Unless there is an update to how the packs are beeing made, there is basically 0 way of telling As someone who played pokemon in my childhood i see this as an absolute loss but im also suprised the foil of the pack and other cards dont distort the image enough to fully scramble it

My thoughts on CT Scanning TCG packs as a whole: If you have sealed product and want to know what’s in it without opening it, then I guess is okay as long as you don’t have the intent on reselling it for a much higher price. Reselling these Scanned Product is not good not only for the market, but to casual collectors without knowledge of the situation. There will be people out there who will scalp for high end packs and sell the rest knowing the packs are mostly duds. It’s not just a Pokémon problem, but the TCG as a whole. People scanning their MTG Alpha Decks for a Black Lotus and if it’s not there, they just sell it for what it normally goes for. If it is there, it’s ultimately up to the owner if they want to keep it or sell for a ludicrous price. I hope it doesn’t gain traction to where it’s the norm because it takes the fun away from the whole point of Pack Openings.

The card makers want everyone to be more into collecting then gaming, so they keep printing more and more flashier cards. If it wasn’t about that, no KZbinr would ever mention the value of the cards when doing an opening. So if it’s truly just about the excitement of pulling a cool card, why even mention its price? It’s basically gambling :) Plus, I think the cost of scanning one booster is pretty high right now, but as there’s a market for it, other companies will step in, and in a few years, this could become common. That's why I prefer buying singles for kids - I know exactly what I'm getting. As for gambling, they can take that risk when they're 18. By the way, the return from boosters is around 33% in terms of value, the exact same return as scratch cards. Would you promote scratch cards to children just because there's a 1 in 500 chance of hitting ''a rare one worth 200 dollars''?
