To be honest, as unrealistic as it is, I would love to see the scene completely animated and placed on the 20th Anniversary DVD or something. I will say though: The choice to cut the song was, in my opinion, the right choice. Not only does the story flow better, but makes the Hobo a far more mysterious character. I think keeping his origins vague makes him a far more interesting character.

Makes the scene of the girl saying she was sure and the boy saying together when stopping the train more impactful. Plus, makes the conflict of believing more concrete and gives steamer and Smokey a reason to exist and transitions into the next scene with them at the light better. But I didn’t think the song fit.

I have to admit, I like the backstory of the hobo. It adds a bit more lore to the Polar Ex. Like these guys see the hobo as a ghost, yet the Polar Express is not entirely of this world. 5:27 you wouldn’t believe it, but this part actually solves quite a bit of lore on the ghost in the movie. I have heard a fair share of ghost stories from real engines, one example is when I went to visit the Reading 2100. They had a coach that was in an accident and all the windows were open, the passengers didnt survive, and every time a window would be open on the coach it would slam shut a few minoutes later. All the windows were serviced amd in really good condition too, and they slid down to open. Now you may be asking, “what does this half to do with the ghost in the movie?” Keep in mind, when he died on flat top tunnel he slipped and fell on the coach. And the conductor mentions that on his first day he slipped and didn’t fall off, perhaps that ghost pulled him up just like he does later when the main character about falls off 1225 aka the polar express. The reason I bring this up is because if you believe in stories of ghosts on trains then the reason they shut the windows on the coach is to protect the people inside the coach, so the ghost in the movie pulls people who almost fall off back up. This would also explain why he tales the main character to the engine, because if he doesn’t the main character would have also suffered the same fate on flat top tunnel. Think about that…

Over the years the Hobo (or King, rather) has become the embodiment of the eerie vibe of the Polar Express to me, what holds all of that "off" feeling together, and the fact that they added a paranormal aspect to the movie in the first place - something that wasn't a part of the original story at all - makes me way more endeared to the movie and captivated by the (literal) haunting atmosphere of The Polar Express; the Hobo feels both like an integral part of the Polar Express story (in being a metaphor for not believing - which is kind of fucked up, or being a metaphor for the Holy Spirit/Guardian Angels, and for adding the mysticism of Christmas by being a ghost in general), but he also feels separate from it all (as in, he was a severely poor man who jumped onto a train, because that's what he needed to do to get around, but then he got killed by an oncoming tunnel and now literally haunts the train, helping kids not suffer from the same fate when they somehow get on top of the roof). Also the animation of his death was really cool. It's just, when you watch the movie, there's something dark there - something that you can barely scratch the surface of, especially if you have no deleted scenes context or knowledge, and it itches at you in a wrong way in the most positive way possible, because somehow you also relate to it. It adds that dark part, a "reality" of sorts, that some other Christmas stories don't have, but quite a few that do which snags my attention more than other standard holiday stories (well, Christmas stories have always been kind of dark, but there's a quite a few without the existential realities of life (like the greed of man, the severities of being poor, or the concept of death) thrown in).

An awesome detail about this scene is that at 3:19, 3:24, and 4:09, you can see an, albeit unfinished, rendering of the flux capacitor from Back to the Future above the three dials in the upper left corner of the control hub!!!

Well, it was 2009 so the way they make 3D animation on a base level is way different today than it was then. It would probably be easier to start from scratch than try to use this base animation to make anything, unfortunately. It’s still cool to think about would it would look like as a finished animation tho🤔☺️

The guy who played Smokey & Steamer (Michael Jeter, who passed away in Mar 2003 during the making of the film) is the actor who played "Mr. Noodle's brother, Mr. Noodle" on "Elmo's World". He is also the bad guy in "Air Bud", and got eaten by a velociraptor in "Jurassic Park III". Very talented man that we lost way too soon (he was only 50). A lot of kids who watched him as Mr Noodle would not be born for years after he passed, due to them rerunning all his segments for years afterwards. (the original Mr Noodle is still alive; Jeter was "Mr Noodle's brother, Mr Noodle")

This is incredible, thank you so much for showing us this! This clears up so much of the ambiguity in the film over who the homeless fella was and why he was there. The movie probably did flow better without this scene but my god does it lend some heart and context. I loved this.

I think it would've been cool, if this scene was fully finished. I bet it would've looked pretty neat, as well as for when Smokey & Steamer tell the story of the Hobo. Well...except for this: 3:30

This is such a good movie. One year ago I made a bit of an analysis on the hobo, and even thought he song is good, what interests me the most is the secret story about the hobo. A fan recommended this video to me recently, and its always fun to look at these behind the scenes videos.
