This song makes me think of my childhood and unfortunately it led the crises of today. I was the odd man out in school and so it was music I turned to for solace. "King Of Pain" as a 7 year old was something I couldn't understand, but years later I find myself saying this is one of the great masterpieces of a long and illustrious career. Sting has such a cool and clear and haunting voice. All 3 of them are top flight musicians! Did you know as trivia Andy Summers' first band? I'm gonna give it to you: Dantalion's Chariot. He was an old pro by the time The Police formed that band was formed in 1967!!!!!! I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, Sting is the youngest of the three. He, however, began in the 70s as a jazz musician. They all had been around and that reminds me of my favorite band of them all Toto. Toto played a million sessions for some the cream of the 70s and then decided to make their own music. I'm glad they did. I'm glad that The Police found each other and now I feel it was all too brief. The fighting and all that it takes so many bands down. Saddest thing is we'll not ever have this chemistry again in the mainstream, but keep your focus on the indies they're getting closer all the time. If you like this I recommend Elbow a newer UK band with great vocals. However, like that old soul song says "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing BayBay!"

I thought no way could they equal the studio recording THEY TOPPED IT STING IS AMAZING ANDY SUMMERS AND STEWART COPELAND ARE AMAZING! Why did I hate this song half my life? I heard it at age 7 and was taken aback when I got a hard on and all kinds of other crazy things happened when I heard it. That was quite an experience and since every song they did and Sting did and will do has been very moving for me I really include him in a long thank you list when I make my first album. I'm 39 almost and despite his wonderful looks Sting was not young nor were Andy and Stu when they formed the band together. It's tragic we don't have a whole bunch of bands anymore who have such a clear and vibrant sound as in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but music is something that will never die. It will outlive us. It will survive everything and everybody. That's quite amazing to think about and why I sing and write lyrics. I have an idea for a song I'm writing where I look in the future and there's no world. It's a deep fear I have and writing the song will coerce me into exorcising that fear. Sting wrote this in an angry and dejected mood quite obviously but he wrote it with emotive vocals and a great melody.

I saw them two days before you, on 7 October 1983, in Hamburg. One of my best friends (whom I wouldn't meet for another six years) caught them the following day, 8 October, in Berlin. Another friend attended the same show in Hamburg, but we only found out many years later (we first met 1994). It's funny how this band runs like a thread through some of my most valued friendships. ;O)
