I was 20 years old when this song came out. Brings back so many memory's. The Police are pure genius with those simple chords they use that just make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I hear this music. I miss this group. Thanx for taking a look at them.

"Roxanne" is a love song for a erm, lady of the night. The piano chord in the beginning is an accident. Sting sat on the piano being tired, not realising the lid was open, hence the laughter. They decided to leave it as it can be heard. "Walking On The Moon" is one of their trademark songs and second #1 hit in the UK. Please react to that :) It brings together the key elements - deep bass, great melody, reggae influences and Andy Summer's shimmering guitar sound.

You need to react to Sting’s song Fortress Around Your Heart. It’s from his solo debut album The Dream of the Blue Turtles after The Police broke up. The song is beautiful in its metaphors and the Chorus is incredible. He even considers it the best Chorus he ever wrote. The full album is probably one of the most underrated albums for its lack of huge commercial success, but is considered by many to be his best work and one of the best albums in its genre. You can really hear and feel how talented of a writer and singer/performer he truly is.

This is a wonderful, meaningful, memorable song, made even more famous by Eddie Murphy in the movie "48 Hours" with Nick Nolte. But it's a very male song, with a young guy mansplaining to a prostitute how she should give up her independence to rely on a man just because he says he loves her - but isn't exactly offering a ring or any promises. Most prostitutes got into that situation after being betrayed by men. So there's a real male-chauvinistic edge to this song, unintended as it likely was, where yet another guy is trying to take control over her, take away the few choices she has left, because he feels he deserves it. "I loved ya since I've known ya" he says in the lyrics... but apparently not enough to offer her a better choice *before* she turned to prostitution. "Told you once I won't tell you again I won't share you with another boy" is his reasoning, his side, of what he's asking of her. She should just put all her trust in him, let him keep her, like a pet or a possession... He never promises forever, not even anything full time. In fact, all he seems to be offering is to support her - maybe her one client, but not at the going rate, of course. No mention of marriage, of building a life together, or even any promise never to betray her. He never says he'll be hers, but is clearly asking that she belong to him. Pretty gritty stuff, right? The song is carried by the rawness. That powerful reggae-style beat and the raw, emotional vocals give the song a feeling and emotion that isn't in the words. Which is why a song with pretty poor lyrics has become a modern classic.

"Red Light" means "The Red Light District" in many countries where their are areas that prostitution is legal. Hence; "You don't have to put the red light." because "red light" in general sense means stop as the reference is always the traffic light which in this case is the opposite when the man inlove with Roxanne is telling her to turn off the red light. Sting is the lead vocalist for the band Police. He also has a successful single career.

I never real listened to the words. I just knew the hooks. Now I am hearing the actual words. Great job.

Sting, the lead singer went on to have an illustrious solo career and has put out some of the best music my ears have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Check him out when you have a moment.

I actually missed seeing them when I was in high school, they were on their first tour. My buddy was going and ask me to go too and I said, "Nah, I'm not into that". WHAT A MISTAKE!!

I like how you're not afraid to admit when you were wrong about the meaning of a song. Glad to know you read the comments just to set the record straight, though of course some people didn't need to be so harsh explaining it. Also check out these Police songs: Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Message in a Bottle, I Can't Stand Losing You, Wrapped Around Your Finger, and King of Pain.
