One of my favorite Police songs to play bass along with. Simple, but driving and in the pocket.

Really nice. Check Rick Beato's interview with Stewart Copeland if you haven't already. They reference this track, and it was in large part initially composed on a little, low-function Casio mini keyboard. Of course, the other thing about this line is that Sting had to sing at the same time as playing it.

Love it! I wish Sting played it live like that. Too hard to play and sing, I guess. Spot on work!!

IMPORTANT: I don't know if anyone else knows, but live instead of starting in Am they play it Dm, leaving the chorus in G, while on the album the chorus is in D No sé si alguien mas lo sabe, pero en vivo en vez de empezar en Am ellos la tocan Dm, quedando el coro en G, mientras que en el disco el coro esta en D

BTW, awesome play and recording. I didn't expect the the Spirit to sound so warm and round. Around 1:00 first verse after the chorus, there is a missing note. In the next video, you must sing it. Great job.
@justinandsheba2 ай бұрын
Thanks. That's actually how Sting played it on the record. He pauses on the "C" at the end of the chorus, then he doesn't do the little stutter that first time in the next verse. I learned this straight from the isolated bass line.

Analysing this, The key to this one is the fact that stewart is not setting the beat, if anything the guitar is the mainstable of the beat, the added ninth chord at the start actually sounds like its an intro chord before the beat starts counting but actually you start the count on the add 9th and it adds up to 8 beats per bar, having said this the overall timing of the song can be tapped out on your lap as a very fast ska beat, although it doesnt sound that way, the reason it is so hard to count is that fact that there are two rythmic structures in play, comprising of the bass and drums interplay with each other (copeland trying to follow stings idiosyncratic bass and play to it, and the guitar which is following a straight uniform 8 beats to the bar. the reason it sounds so weird but incredible, is usually a band will play to the drummer and not (in this case) the drummer play to the bass, (which in turn is failrly freeform and not uniformly syncopated) ie not playing on the beat.

Great job! On a scale of 1-10, how difficult is that to play? I’ve seen live versions and it seemed like Sting cut down or simplified the bass part. Which I can’t understand because the best part is the bass and drums.
@justinandsheba5 ай бұрын
Thanks. Maybe it's hard to sing over the staccato picking? I don't find it particularly difficult to play the bass line.

I love this bass line, good choice and very well played! I didn´t know the story behind the synthesizer in this song, I never liked it, I prefer the live version with Andy's guitar on top.

It is not a Synth... Well it is a Synth, but a Synth pedal for Andy's Guitar. That sound is produced by Roland Guitar Synthetiser Pedal
@thewomble150910 ай бұрын
@ It's a keyboard. Sting wrote the song on a portable keyboard travelling between gigs. In the video for the song he plays an arpeggiated riff on keys.
