@@patrickluce7924 It depends on what you consider a variant... There are many, many matrix number combos. And there are different ways that the different color vinyl may have been included in different sleeves, I suppose. But there are not 96 cover variations, in terms of art layout. There's what I have here, plus one more black & white one that there's only 1 copy of, which I have, that was printed at the original press check and not sold to the public. Jay, I've owned a copy of this album since it came out, and I only just heard about this last night from an acquaintance of mine who runs a local record shop. One detail you left out, (which goes into a whole different area) is the focus on the vinyl itself of each record. I held my record (what appears to the naked eye black vinyl), up to the light and BOOM! It's actually translucent purple! I NEVER knew it before he mentioned it to me, which drew me to watching your video, in hopes that you'd have touched base on it. Now, I'm very curious as to how many different colored translucent vinyl copies exist! Maybe you mention this in your part 2 video, which I haven't watched yet. I must say, I found your video quite enjoyable and it's nice to find someone else (like myself), who has such a high span of attentiveness to detail to be able to differentiate to the "average Joe". I hope somehow I can meet you some day. Thanks so much for the "variant" education and time you've spent on this album!

Hi Jim, you certainly have touched upon one physical attribute of the synchronicity albums which I purposefully have not really gotten into. These albums were often pressed on a special type of vinyl called KC-600 audiophile vinyl. A physical attribute of the material itself, as you mentioned, is translucent,….. despite looking like it they are black when not held to the light. When held to the light, some appear more purple and the other appear more brown. In my experience, perhaps 10 to 20% of them are brown while the remaining are purple however, I do not consider these to be color vinyl. They were not marketed as such, and again this is a physical attribute of the actual KC-600 material itself that came that way from the vinyl supplier…. It is interesting and cool to discover as a little surprise, though, I totally agree with you. And although I cherish seeing the brown ones as the ones that seem to be a little bit scarcer, I do not assign greater value to them because they are brown. I don’t think anyone else is doing so, either. Here is an interesting discussion about it… forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/share-your-records-pressed-on-secret-quiex-type-vinyl-not-colored-clear-vinyl.285211/page-10

This is an invaluable video to any vinyl freak like myself. I was aware of the cover variations back when the album was first released, but I didn't think much of it. Had I cared at the time, I would've bought every version I could find. Interestingly enough, I bought my original copy in Overland Park, KS at Peaches Records. That copy was a yellow stripe on top with Stewart on the goat in the middle. I first watched this video about a year ago. Since then I've revisited it several times and about three months ago I decided to go down the rabbit hole and attempt to acquire as may variations as possible. I know I'll most likely never find the black and white copies, but I've managed to find all but three of the colored versions in three months.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with getting every single cover variant I could on this record. Of course there was no Internet at the time and I was just flying blind... I remember hearing all kinds of rumors regarding just how many cover variants there were... some were conservative, some downright whacky ("They still pump out new versions EVERY WEEK!")... In any case, I had nearly 20 copies of this record at one time in the 1980's. Some were purple vinyl, some orange/brown. Today I have exactly ONE copy left, the first copy I bought back in '83. It is NOT in audiophile shape anymore, but who cares. It's my original copy... *NOTE my first copy is the "Blender!" :)

Amazing collection and dedidation to an outstanding art product, musically and visually. Well, I'm from Serbia, former Yugoslavia, and I have that yugo record (and cassette too). This "starburst" on the cover is label with word "zlatna", which means "golden". This indicates that record was sold in no less than 100.000 copies. On discogs you can see that one of edition has labeled "platinasta", which means "platinum" and indicates that was sold in 200.000 copies. Regardless of that, there were several editions of "Synchronicity", with two variations of red stripe. At least one of edition (my record) didn't have gatefold cover, just single sleeve, and B/W picture of the band members was included as addition to the cover. It could be pinned on the wall as poster, which i did, normally :)

Your Smirnoff albums say "Get into the rhythm of quality." The sicker on the back says "A Presentation of (or "by") Smirnoff". I have the most common US vinyl, the typical US cassette, and my copy that I listen to right now is a US CD, but it is identical to the Japanese CD you show, save for the ownership info and labels along the bottom of the flip side, and there is no jewel case - it is entirely cardboard. It is blue/yellow/red with the collages starting with the clock and tubas, then Sting's face beneath the text (but only half of his face) and the skeleton, then the piano/eggs on the bottom, in the middle, with the woman missing. The Smirnoff cover for Brazil does indeed appear to be a generic one for a series of comp albums. I think you are right, that the track listings are just stickers, and that this same cover may have been used for many albums. Maybe they were perks for bar owners, like Budweiser pool table lamps and neon signs and tap handles? Perhaps the delivery drivers or regional distributors gave them away to their better customers? They do not look like commercial releases at all. I suspect they are indeed insider comps. They might even be illegal pressings, in violation of copyright. I don't see any ownership marks on those two covers - just Smirnoff ad copy. How weird. This is insane! Thanks for taking the time and having the sheer OCD to amass this collection and then making this excellent video. I never noted that my covers were not the same and that so much variation was intentionally produced for this album. It is one of my favorites, but I guess I failed to really *look* at the photos. For instance, I play tuba professionally in a symphony orchestra (for 29 years now, too) and never once noticed the tubas on the cover! I never noticed the eggs on the piano keyboard, either. Yes, indeed: I am feeling rather dim right now. HAHAHA!!!

Thank you for the translation on the Smirnoff ones! I believe them to be official based on the labels on the vinyl themselves, but they are oddball items FOR SURE and not part of my core tally of 40 different U.S. Synch covers. I made a PART 2 video! Did you see that, too? And I have found more odd foreign stuff that will (hopefully soon) have enough content to justify a 3rd installment, so "subscribe" if you like so that you get a notice when it's ready :-) OCD? Me? One of the best album cover concepts of all-time. Great work on the vid. The printers must've been like wtf crazy rock band lol Is there a way to know the rarity of each of the 38 US set variations there are? Great find on the A&M execs to get the band to sign it. Especially Sting. A Sci-Fi collector in the UK I knew rode a train in France sitting across (somehow) from Sting and his wife. He pulled out a Sci-Fi mag he just purchased with Sting in the movie Dune on the cover. He asked him to sign it. Sting said "That's not me". He replied something to the effect "Well whomever it is you resemble the bloke. Could you be so kind as to sign it." Sting and Trudy laughed so he signed it. 28:00 '4 Colour ' is also referred to in graphic design and printing as '4-Color process' or sometimes 'Full color process' meaning the 'CMYK' printing process. Cyan Magenta Yellow and Black. 'K' also meaning Keyline or Key Plate (less common) which is always the black plate. Most often used for type. Black also being used for 'Registration marks' that look like a crosshairs in a circle that appear off of the image area to align the CMYK plates. which are later cropped off. Ah it's all coming back to me. I don't want to tell you about Rapidograph pens, gauche, rubylith, rub down trnsfers and photostats lol Then came computers.

Thanks for checking out both this video and also my Part 2 continuation video in full! Glad you got some enjoyment / amusement out of them!!! In terms of the matrix numbers, yeah, I indicated at the beginning of my part one video that I don’t get into all the different matrix numbers because there would be too many stampers to account for. In that sense, Discogs lists out many more variations than there are cover versions. They are considering variations to be differences in the stamper etchings on the vinyl records, which is different than documenting the cover designs
@amusement420 Жыл бұрын
@@jaymatsueda627 yes I remember you saying that. I added it out of interest. I never paid attention to the matrix numbers in fact. My main interest is where my cover art falls into the grand scheme. Your vids take the mystery out of it big time!!! I hadn't checked the discog variants for what most have been selling for to gage which might be more common to rare' But $10-28 isn't bad. A used store would probably give me 50 cents to a dollar lol It feels 'rarer' to me since it was at the bottom your your lists and only one of two in the photo arrangement the other being black & white. I'm personally am pleased with the photo montage compared to others. Mine has carefully placed tape on the bottom of the inner paper sleeve. The LP cut thru the thin paper. Even with my hunt for all of these, I still feel that 40 variations is too small a sample size to be statistically significant, but among the color varieties, my intuition is that some of the ones with yellow or red top stripes are harder to hunt down. Also challenging is being sure SELLERS have listed their items correctly, because we don’t know if they realize that variants exist.

I think I may have a version that isn’t in your collection, the order of color stripes matches that of the UK versions: yellow, blue, red on front and blue, red, yellow on the bottom. The front cover matches one of the black/white or bronze, silver, gold versions but it has the color stripes. It is also missing “Murder by Numbers” side 2 ends with “Tea in the Sahara.” Also the band members are mixed up in each of the front color stripes i.e. yellow has Andy, Sting, Stewart, blue has Andy and Stewart, and red has pictures of Andy, Sting, Stewart. It says A&M 1983. Also there is the butterfly on the back cover. Very odd. Let me know if you want to see pictures. I’m going to rewatch your video and see if it is in there but I don’t think it is. I wanted to ask, is there any vinyl version of the Japanese cover? It’s the cover I’m the most familiar with. Also because it’s on Spotify too, unless I’m confusing that one too.
@JayMatsuedaOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Well... There's not really an EXACT vinyl version that matches the Japanese CD, because the CD removes the shadowing under the handwritten band name and album title on the top. The photos and stripe colors on the front are common to the main version of the Synchronicity album -- but it flip flops the order to use the Sting stripe in the middle. And on the back of the CD, being a wider format than a square LP, it extends the photo stripes wider than the LPs with more visible photo elements. So, it's different, and I include a copy in my full collection as a result.

do you have any info about the US pressings actually being purple vinyl? (you only see it when you hold it to the light)
@jaymatsueda6276 жыл бұрын
Nearly all U.S. pressings are the dark purple translucent vinyl... except there are also a smaller number that are brown translucent vinyl. The ones I have noticed are mostly from the Black&White-sleeved LPs. I don't know officially what the % breakdown is between purple and brown copies...

Ok I think maybe I figured it out. It is a blended US #37 that is missing “Murder by Numbers” on side 2
@JayMatsuedaOfficial Жыл бұрын
Here is my actual checklist that shows only the front covers and which are paired in groupings that show the associated back covers... It sounds like you have #37.... And "Murder by Numbers" doesn't appear on any of the vinyl records. It was only on cassette and CD. www.jaymatsueda.com/CHECKLIST--US-Synch-LP-covers.pdf

Did they make variations for the cassettes too or just on vinyl exclusively?
@jaymatsueda6274 жыл бұрын
There are a couple cassettes within this video and a handful more in the Part 2 sequel to this video... but generally the official cassettes were of a couple variations. They only went wild with that LP sleeves

Check out the Part 2 of this video for a few more tapes, plus some pirate tapes that showed up in some Asian countries where it appears that that's all they had access to, meaning that it seems doubtful that there -were- any official releases there, but somehow they got the music anyway, via pirated copies... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZzQao2MmrNgnKs

so is that Festival record multicolored vinyl one the only one like that? are there othersm
@jaymatsueda6276 жыл бұрын
Correct. There exists only that one unique multi-colored Synchronicity Festival LP (and no other LPs by The Police or any other artists with that same pattern, to anyone's current knowledge). There is also a Zenyatta splatter one made by the same guy at Festival, who has since deceased, which is a blue & purple pattern and is unique as a Zenyatta album, although there is also a "sister" LP by another artist which was created with the same blue & purple pattern at the same time by the same guy.

Why were so many variations of this album made?

But what about the 8-track versions? CRC vs. RCA music club?
@JayMatsuedaOfficial4 жыл бұрын
The CRC LP is included here as an LP with an alternate red Pantone used (pink instead of a true red). Apart from that as a variation, unless something is truly different with the layout, I used the LP as the representation of the variation first and foremost. I do have an RCA cassette which, on the black plate, includes the RCA licensing info smack dab in the middle of the cover art, which is weird as hell. That's not yet documented in either this or the PART 2 video I made showing these. But as far as I'm aware, there is no other difference in the photo layout or stripe color order or Pantones in the 8-track tape versions, so those are not included. I also don't have a way to play those (not that I am really playing the tapes, either, out of fairness), so they are overall less desirable for me...
@johnmacmillan2174 жыл бұрын
@@JayMatsuedaOfficial yeah I was only talking about tape, 8-track cartridges, and that there are two versions: an Record Club of America edition that has Murder By Numbers, and the Columbia Record and Tape Club edition that doesn't have the extra song... There's a reel to reel to get, too!Feels like you should have it in all original formats if you're gonna go that far anyway! And, get yourself an 8-track deck! LOL Cheers!
@jaymatsueda6274 жыл бұрын
Well, it was never about formats. It was about design variations, actually. So unless there is something in the cover art that’s different, then it’s out of scope for me... 😊

@@AWZeus There are some that took me longer to find than others and which seem a bit 'rarer.' Certainly, the "main" version is most common. It's difficult to ascertain relative manufacturing QTYs of the rest across such a small sample size. They sold MILLIONS, and I've got 40 domestic and probably as many foreign ones, but even 80 of the same album against millions made doesn't provide enough insight. You'd be hardpressed to command a higher price for yours, should you ever decide to sell it, versus any other copy, unless you happened to know that a buyer was looking for that one specifically.

hi Jay i need to ask u smth. is the variant with the nude girl considered rare? how many variations of the 3 colour variants (red blue yellow in any order) has the nude girl. a friend told me its not super rare but rarer than the non nudes and mentioned the gold/brass ones are rarer as well as those b and w ones. those without the photos are rarer than dinosaur fossils EDIT: just saw your video again. out of the 36 colored variants 1 has the nude gal on the front while 1 has it on the back. i will consider this to be pretty rare. 🔎
@JayMatsuedaOfficial Жыл бұрын
Hey there... The 6 commercially released Black&White ones [[[and 1 Black& White one which was never commercially released, shown in my 'PART 2' video]]] are far rarer and about 3 to 6 times more costly (depending on whether they are sealed) than the version with metallic color stripes that HAS the photos. The metallic stripes version WITHOUT photos is incredibly rare with only a 'suspected' 10 copies to have perhaps been made, but that was an approximation... and the whereabouts of only 2 copies are known today. The Black&White one which was never commercially released is only known to exist in the one copy that I have. The market would dictate the value of that B&W one or the 'No Photos' ones, but they would EASILY be several thousand dollars each, conservatively. --- As far as the layout with the nude woman on it, when you look at my checklist available via my Instagram, you'll see that it's on 2 color ones and 2 b&w ones (35, 36, 37 and 38)
@JayMatsuedaOfficial Жыл бұрын
Oh, and in my experience (although the sample size is too small to truly gauge accurately), I wouldn't say that any given color version is more rare than another, outside of the "main" version that I refer to being the most common...

Is there a Red - Blue - Yellow?

Not that I am aware of on a U.S. LP sleeve. Whenever red is the top stripe on either side, yellow is the center.
