Actually Hedvig was crowned as King of Poland (sic!) and when Jogaila was crowned, they both had the title of King of Poland and Hedvig had additionally the title of the Queen and Grand Duchess (wife of the King and Grand Duke)

Jadwiga was crowned king cuz she became a monarch not the wife of a king. Today we have for example queen elizabeth and her title- queen does not mean that she is a wife of ruler, but the monarch. I added the marks cuz it can be confusing for a person who is not keen on Polish history.

Nils Wettlin Absolutely not, the largest military power was catholic France which pretty much was allied with the Ottomans to weaken its Austrian/HRE rivals. The war against the Ottomans lasted from 1683 to 1699. From 1688 to 1697 there was at the same time as the war against the Ottomans also the Nine Years War of much of Europe against France (Louis XIV). The Ottomans were defeated time and time again during the war, there’s no way that they somehow magically could’ve conquered Europe when they were already defeated by parts of the HRE (Austria, Bavaria, Saxony and some smaller contingents from Franconia, Baden etc.) and Poland at the Battle of Vienna.

@@HistoryHouseProductions yeah, would be pretty different. Maybe some mix between Roman Empire and EU? That was basically the vision of Otton III, the only German ruler Poland got along with. But it probably was never possible. Polish history lessons basically start with in 966 Poland baptized itself so the Germans would finally stop attacking us with no reason and had to come up with some justification from now on. But there were tries, the friendship with Otton III, leasing Prussia to Teutonic Knights (yeah, that didn't end well), serving in German army during WW1 (okay, Poles served in basically every army during that war, but we served *especially* in german one), agreeing at gunpoint that East Germany doesn't have to pay us reparations for WW2 that unified Germany still uses as excuse to not do so... (and we somehow are the only country that expected to deal with it, due to potential of Germany demanding Pomerania, even if Germany surrendered uncondintionally...)

Actually there was a period of history that was even worse for the PLC economically, the great northern war at the beginning of the XVIIIth century when Swedes and Russians (typical) ransacked the country even more than during the deluge and ww2. "Szlachta" simply means "Nobility" or "Nobles"... that's all there is to it. The first nobles were knights. Then the status was simply hereditary, though in some cases noble status, complete with a new coat of arms, could be awarded for gallantry in military service or whatnot.

Just some weird voting caste from all levels of social hierarchy... which really wasn't the case 😅. It's true that some Polish nobility ended up impoverished (yet still retained their privileges), but as a general rule, they were knights at first and feudal lords/landowners later. Take it from a Polish noble, not that it means much nowadays though, haha!

Fun fact: Prussia was originally founded (or East Prussia) as a principality/duchy within the commonwealth, for mostly German nobilities (which is another 'progress' of the PL Commonwealth, racial and ethnical tolerance, which includes Catholic and Protestant Germans). And Prussia in turn led the unification of Germany, the foundation of modern Germany. So in a nutshell... There'd be no Germany without Poland XD

Basically Queen wasn’t an existing title in Poland but that doesn’t mean a woman couldn’t be the monarch. So, a female couldn’t be queen but they could be King.

05:30 is really misleading for a whole number of reasons lol... First of all the Polish army made up only about 1/3 of the relief army that fought at the Battle of Vienna. Less than 1/3 if we also include the garrison of Vienna that was also fighting against the Ottomans during the battle. The bulk of the army were Imperial Austrian and German troops (with the largest contingents from Bavaria and Saxony). Furthermore the Polish troops on the right wing arrived late for the battle, the Austrian and German troops were already fighting half a day before the Polish infantry arrived. The Polish cavalry really only entered the battle in the evening after pretty much a whole day of fighting when the Ottomans were already facing defeat (the right wing of the Ottomans was routed and the center under infantry attack from three sides). In the end even if the Ottomans would’ve conquered Vienna there’s no way that they could’ve conquered Europe. Large parts of Europe fought against France (Nine Years War 1688-1697) whilst the war against the Ottomans (1683-1699) was going on... Louis XIV was basically more of a threat than the Ottomans.

Szlachta was basically gentry. The wealth of the members differed greatly - some were equal to peasents when it came to money, some were również cher then the king. And it wasn't that hard to join that group - you could join the army and prove that you're brave enough or jist lie your way in - tbh no one cared that much

I liked how you have noted the fact that members of Szlachta were sometimes poor and sometimes rich, however they were all considered to be the nobility - szlachta is a polish word for nobility. They were not members of different classes although one could be knighted and then become a Szlachcic. The main requirement was to own land. I would also note that there was a distinction between Szlachta and Magnateria - Szlachta was basicallly composed of lesser knights and such and Maganteria of very wealthy and influential families that owned a lot of land. Correspondingly the Szlachta sat in the lower house of the Parliament (Sejm) while Maganteria was in the Senate. Although due to their wealth it is debatable if Magnateria simply controlled both

It's "funny" to me as Pole that we blame everything on Germany and Russia yet we never mention Sweden. It's as people have forgotten about everything that was devastated, looted, killed, raped u mention. And if u want to see Polish art from this time u know u have to go to Sweden's museums. SAD
