Yup, there are three basic types of power in this universe. Economic, military and political. The Atreides had a lot of political and military power, the Harkonnens had a lot of economic power. The Emporer was able to get the Harkonnens to wipe out the Atreides (almost), in a way that diminished most of their economic power.

I think the most valuable thing you've done here, is create an almost entirely spoiler-free breakdown for Dune novices. I use Dune as my central text in some of the composition courses I teach, and I find myself endlessly editing my proposed necessary summary of the Dune text/universe so that we can all approach it with equal footing within a given course. That's hard to do without spoiling certain nuances of the story while also remaining concise, but I think you've achieved both of those qualities here. Nice job, dude.

The only spoiler is at the end, saying that they need to keep Arrakis dry for the spice production. The movie and at least the fist half of the book I've read so far leave the question of why they don't terraform Arrakis to be more habitable open, at first saying it would just be too expensive. The guild doesn't even let Leto Atreides deploy weather satellites.

When talking about how manipulative the Bene Gesserit are, you need to remember that they're largely atheistic and have an entire branch, the Missionaria Protectiva, designed to deliberately manipulate WHOLE RELIGIONS to make their beliefs more favorable to the Bene Gesserit. They also have a long-term view of events measured in millennia because their leaders, the Reverend Mothers, have access to all of their ancestral memories on the female side throughout the history of humanity--meaning that a Reverend Mother knows everything that her mother, her grandmothers, their mothers and grandmothers, and so on back through time all knew.

I always found it interesting that there weren't non-guild space travelers. Interstellar travel is still possible without Navigators, but there's a 10% chance the ship will be lost in every trip. That's certainly a massive risk but human greed has never been stopped by massive risk. There are periods in human history when almost half of mercantile and exploratory ships were lost. But the profit from such undertakings was so great that people were willing to take that risk.

Another thing that should be mentioned about spice is that it is literally what makes space travel possible for the Empire. The navigators from the Spacing Guild are heavily mutated humans that are have the ability to set courses to other planets and see the potential hazards for the voyage. They’ve gotten all of this power and mutations from spice. Without the flow of spice, there would be no traveling from planet to planet.

The political system of the empire in Dune is heavily inspired by of that of the medieval Holy Roman Empire (HRE). Even the term "Landsraad" clearly has a medieval German/Dutch root, just like you'd expect from the HRE. The HRE also had a council of noble families who had their own fiefdoms with a high degree of autonomy. Their leaders had various titles like "duke", "baron", or "prince", just like in the Dune empire and they officially elected the emperor, though often this was just a rubberstamp because an imperial house was so powerful (though never powerful enough to take on all the other houses combined, again just like in Dune) it simply had their male heir of choice confirmed by the electors. The HRE didn't have the Bene Gesserit but in many the Catholic Church had a similar role. Interestingly the HRE was torn apart in the 17th century (and never really recovered) by the Thirty Years War, a religious civil war between catholics and protestants that killed a significant portion of the population. I guess that's something that stuck with Frank Herbert in history class.
@Niniene

And, of course, the Bene Gesserit were based upon the Jesuits (hence the similar name). They didn't exist in the HRE, but substitute the Dominicans (or any other order) and...
@davidwuhrer6704
@davidwuhrer6704 2 жыл бұрын
There are similarities, and differences. House Corrino rules through military power. The emperor of the HRE was never a great military power, and both elected by a small subset nobles (not a Landsrat) who had inherited that privilege, and also invested by the Catholic pope. The emperor was not always the male progeny of the previous emperor, in part because not all emperors had male progeny. And, unlike kings, the emperor could not invest and divest nobles under his jurisdiction at will. The emperor and the pope jointly invested the bishops of the empire, but only the pope could divest them again. The HRE was disbanded by Napoleon Bonaparte in the 18th century. (Purely by military might; he was not a member, let alone the emperor, of the HRE.) The Thirty Year War was the most terrible war Europe had ever seen, and inevitably part of the HRE was part of that war. It did not tear apart the empire though. Members of the empire had been at war with each other before and afterwards as well.
@gulliverdeboer5836
@gulliverdeboer5836 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidwuhrer6704 House Corrino didn't rule through military means: it's literally said that the combined military power of the Landsraad would overpower House Corrino, just like in the HRE. The Ottonian and Habsburg dynasties definitely had powerful armies of their own. I'm unsure why you think the Landsraad is anything other than a small group of select nobles.

The only other big detail that's worth mentioning (but barely addressed in the books) is that the Great Houses provide a substantial check on the Emperor's power by having independent access to nuclear weapons. They've banned them among themselves, but towards the end of _Dune_ it's heavily implied that if the Landsraad became aware of the crimes the Imperial House committed against Atreides, they would likely waive their prohibition of nuclear warfare in order to sink Corrino.

Additionally Paul is confused as to what his visions/dreams were about: a life for a new life…until faced with that situation. Then in that instance he sees that it’s not his life to be lost, but rather his death/rebirth after taking a life (a person dies to some degree when taking life, but can be reborn when the act is out of honor). Immediately after, all of the Fremen make a point to touch Paul as he walks by…not necessarily out of compassion but to them something more significant. They were validating him and his decision: ‘we now see you’ ‘we now recognize you as a person who has significant honor’ And you are who we hoped you would be.

That scene flagrantly deviates from the book, in that the fight takes place in the open and also not in underwear. It doesn't make as much sense, but it is more dramatic this way. I find Jessica's answer to Stilgar's inquiry unsatisfying. It makes sense, but the audience might not realise that her answer is not the actual reason why Paul fights the way he fights.

Paul is validated 3 times in the movie. His test with the Reverend Mother confirmed that he is not a mere instinct based man and has deeper thoughts than expected of men. His near-death with the Hunter Seeker showed that he was not the careless fool he was earlier and then when meeting the Fremen he is accepted as one who exists within their circle.

I always had the impression that Caladan was the ancestral home of the Atreides(es?), and their “ownership” of it was deeper than simply being assigned to it by the Imperium… same with the Harkonnens on Geidi Prime. @graceskerp
@graceskerp 2 жыл бұрын
@@dawn-blade Sorry for the delay. I didn't read Song of Ice and Fire nor follow GoT that closely, so any contrast/compare will be superficial. Firstly, unlike Westeros the noble houses in the Dune universe don't play a large role in the story. They certainly do fight among themselves, but they wisely make no play for imperial power. The Emperor's Sardaukars make sure they behave themselves. The most ambitious and dangerous is House Harkonnen. Another compare: Dune is filled with characters who have their own agendas and goals. Finally Dune has an important fringe group which everyone ignores or dismisses until they show up at the front door. They're led by a charismatic individual who succeed in kicking in the door, but with dire results for both himself and the empire. Getting into the series: OK, start with the book. It's a dense read, certainly not a weekend or beach book, but it is worth the effort. Films: Lynch's fundamental problem is the story can not be told in one feature film, just too much background and characters. If you can find it, there's the SyFy's version. It has its problems, doubtful casting choices and the budget definitely shows in the special effects and sets. However, it's far more faithful to the narrative than Lynch's. Finally, check Quinn's Ideas and Nerd Cookies TY videos. They both do excellent analyses of all things Dune.
