Before the spice was found, they were into psychedelics, which is kind of interesting since many ancient cultures and even animals do this. I had mushrooms a long time ago. Quite strange, and a bad idea to do that every week, but there's certainly more inside. I remember I was disgusted by tobacco while I was a quite addicted smoker, and I lost all sense of modern society. Like, money is a joke and MTV was mental insanity.

Millennia, more like. According to the Dune Encyclopedia (the only Dune fiction that was actually approved by Frank Herbert, not the bullshit his son wrote), the Bene Gesserit were an old order well before the Butlerian Jihad. The Jihad happened when an AI medical machine decided that Bene Gesserit sister Jehane Butler's fetus was defective and aborted the about-to-be-born baby. Jehane Butler's fetus was a girl - who would have been named Sarah, and who would have been the mother of the Kwisatz Haderach. This happens over 10,000 years BEFORE the events of the "Dune" novel.

I dunno. I see that I am in the minority here but I thought the portrayal was too surfacy. I think she should be perfect nearly all the time and find much more subtle ways to expose the doubts inside. Her training should make her extremely hard to read. She's emoting all over the place in this movie. That might work for someone just viewing the movie but if you've read the book, the conflict is jarring.

@@bradleynoneofyourbizz5341 The movie is absolutely littered with moments like that, and honestly it was necessary to make the film succeed. Does anybody realize that this movie/story is an allegory for what's _actually happening_ in reality? Bene Gesserit are a stand-in for the secret occult orders that have always secretly controlled our world, and they describe their agenda perfectly in the movie. Look at our world and everything going on. It's telling the same story. They gave the world all of their religions to serve their greater plan for the world. It's mind-boggling to me that I never see anyone point this out. The timing of the movie was also interesting.

Saw the movie today with my wife, who never saw Lynch’s erosion, or read the books or saw the tv series and yet, she was able to follow the plot perfectly. I think Vileneuve did a fantastic job with the plot. By the way, my wife loved it.
@BlackEpyon

Also saw it today. Lynch's version is important if you want to understand the references and art style of the Westwood Dune games, but otherwise it's a B-movie. Vileneuve's version omitted a few details, but stayed pretty true to the book otherwise. It wasn't quite how I expected it to go, but I wasn't at all disappointed. I can't comment on how well it works for people who weren't into the novels, but the action sequences were awesome, and you could really get a sense of the sheer scale of things. Definitely picking up a copy once it comes out on video.

I was very glad to see that the new movie does include the Missionaria Protectiva, though they never call it that. It's the seeding of cultures with myths and superstitions by the Bene Gesserit, that they can exploit should one of them be trapped there. The previous two adaptations suggest that Paul really is the prophesied "Messiah", but that's a lie. The Bene Gesserit set up the situation where Paul can make himself out to be the Messiah they've been hoping for, for his, and his family's, benefit. They created both the prophesy and the means to fulfill it.

The genetic memories thing is especially interesting as the number of matrilineal or patrilineal ancestors an individual has goes up linearly with generations, whilst the number of ancestors overall a person has goes up exponentially e.g. everyone reading this has 1 matrilineal great-great-grandmother, but 32 great-great-grandparents in general. So having access to memories from ancestors of both sexes (Assuming you could access your fathers, mothers father...etc.) would represent much more knowledge - millions or billions of people, compared to thousands.

From Chapterhouse Dune....."She (Darwi Odrade) could feel the bond tugging at her and recognized it with the fine edge of her Bene Gesserit abilities. Love, damnable love, weakening love....she understood what had happened to the Lady Jessica and the other Bene Gesserit failures. This feeling was love! And look at the troubles this hidden force had caused the Bene Gesserit over the millennia. The Lady Jessica and her love for her Duke had been only one example among countless others. Love clouded reason. It diverted the Sisters from their duties. Love could be tolerated only where it caused no immediate and obvious disruptions or where it served the larger purposes of the Bene Gesserit. Otherwise it was to be avoided." It almost stirs a pang of sympathy for the Bene Gesserit who come to realize this. At least it does with me.

I always thought that because the Bene Gesserit spent so many generations planting superstitions and religions across the universe that they started to believe in their own made superstitions. And I think they're also overconfident in how much they actually gain from their Other Memory. Because they can only recall as much of each past life up to the moment of conception, so they're only getting a small part of the actual knowledge and experience of each past life.

I like your voice, your view, and your way of sharing a cool story. So I subscribed. It is enjoyable, but elementary dear Quinn. Take no offence, I'm glad you're helping peeps understand. I'm Old School: found Dune decades ago, have read all 6 books and figured them out on my own. That's why I was very happy when Herbert's son (a top writer on his own, before joining with another top author) picked up his Father's Universe. They wrote books filling in gaps, extending knowledge of history, then a while after Frank's death, found in his papers the table of contents for the 7th book. There was so much he joked it would take over 1,000 pages in a book to write, which was too much. So he and his friend finished his father's series, answering all the lingering questions - in book 7 and 8. There are now something around 19 Dune books. And all of them are worth reading.

The absolute hubris of the Bene Gesserit to dare such a thing is also part of what dooms humanity. And they do engage in serious reforms when Paul’s son takes over and by Heretics it’s a very different organization.

I figured out who the voice was in Paul's head when he was seeing possible futures: Grandma Gaius Helen. She was suggesting that he submit to death and make way for the Kwizatz Hadderach.

Mohiam is NOT Paul's grandmother, Tanidia Nerus is/was. The "retcon" that Mohiam used the name of Nerus for the breeding records is just Brian "the hack" Herbert's shameless attempt to justify his sloppy storytelling. I refuse to accept that excuse as canon, and anyone with respect for Frank's work should too.
@compub3ar
@compub3ar 2 жыл бұрын
@@theeffete3396 The Dune Encyclopedia suggests otherwise. While we will probably never know if Frank Herbert actually left notes confirming, we do know that he endorsed the Encyclopedia before his death and the 'Nerus-Mohaim Controversy' is in there. Narratively it's a beautiful twist and I lean towards the Grandma Gaius side. And hey, I'm no great fan of Brian Herbert and that other guy either but your contempt and spite seems to be disproportionate. You alright?

I don’t think the goal of the BG was direct control. They were trying to improve the system of government. Create a better “chained leviathan”. But the KH golden path wasn’t the narrow corridor they were looking for.

Little did anyone know the Kwisatz Haderach wasn't actually Paul. He and his sister Alia were more like the experimental stepping stone and precursors to the actual Kwisatz Haderach which was Paul's son Leto II. So in essence the Bene Gesserit weren't off when they assumed the Kwisatz Haderach was just one generation away within the Atreides bloodline.

It was funny how I learned about dune. It started with seeing a figure of the Baron from the 80s movie, with no context. Then I learned about the Giger art for it while watching how they made alien. Still no context to the story. And then one of the families from a homeschool group had it, but I never picked it up. Then like 8 years later, I saw a review of the og movie and it finally all came together

This is slightly off-topic, but perhaps you might consider a video about the influence of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom novels on Frank Herbert? By now it's all but a cliche to point out the influence of Herbert on George Lucas, but I see Herbert's opus as being in turn rather deeply derivative of Burroughs. The desert planet, the use among a high-tech society of primitive weaponry like swords and knives (which Herbert as least come up with an explanation for, via personal Holztmann shields), the ornithopter-like flying machines used on Barsoom, even the myserious, almost messianic character of John Carter....these all strike me as having influenced Herbert deeply, especially since a young boy of his generation would have almost certainly been familiar with Burroughs' work. It's also worth pointing out that in the early drafts of Herbert's work, the planet involved was not a desert planet in another star system, but instead revolved around the terraforming of Mars, i.e. Barsoom.

Not "control." Ultimately, the Bene Gesserit wants what every mother wants: for her children to survive, prosper, and to see her grandchildren. Only the BG have epanded this to the entire human race. They want humans to survive -- come what may. And to do that they need to see ahead as well as behind. In a sense, Leto was the BG's ultimate success. He "saw" that prescience would become a trap for humans somewhere in the future. So he lived on till no-ships were invented, and random mutations produced Siona -- who could evade prescience.

Quite the contrary. One of THE central motifs of the dune franchise is the futility of the human drive to control chaos. The Bene Gesserit are perhaps the Prime embodiment of this idea. In order to control, one must exist outside of the system being operated upon, not within it. The Sisterhood was moving according to a higher order that it was neither aware nor in control of. It was always, even into the later books, a component of the system it sought to control. This connects to another theme of the books that Quinn actually discusses regularly: when a species reaches a certain size, it ceases to function as a concentration of individuals and begins to function as one vast organism. Herbert explicitlya states over and over that the gaoal was control, and he built a unique manifestation of that drive into literally every single faction and party in the universe. He also explicitly states that the Bene Gesserit were victim to this myopia. Even if there is a maternal element, tht element is subordinate to the hubris of seeking to control chaos.

I think the BG are just winging it, like since they can't see the future they are just enacting countless plans and projects in hopes that one succeeds. They see the goal of the Kwisatz Haderach but cannot see every path that will lead to its creation, and so they need control. They were right tho, the KH will save humanity, and their plan going to shit due to Jessica actually saved everybody, but if the BG ever 100% succeeded then we are all doomed. They do love humanity, but their plan is like 50/50 we all live or we all die.
@theeffete3396
@theeffete3396 2 жыл бұрын
@hecate235 True... but "control" is still an apt term for the process the Sisterhood chose to take. Their Kwisatz Haderach ("the Shortening of The Way") was intended to create their desired future sooner by bridging Time. They alone wanted to decide the future of humanity... and likely cause it's extinction in the process. Would a BG-controlled KH see the necessity of the Golden Path? Would the BG allow it?
