I think it does technically qualify as a polonaise but it is not a great piece to demonstrate a polonaise with as it is very much on the border of classification. Still a great piece of music though.

Hi, I am from Poland and I must say that we Adore Chopin and polonaises ( Polonezy): Polonez one 5 traditional polish dances and we dance it during a special period called studniówka. It is a celebration party100 days before matura exams in high school , when you are 18. We dance Wojciech Kilar polonaise or "pożegnanie ojczyzny" . It is a very special time and it is very long tradition

Yeah, I think this is somewhat lost in the video: polonaise is a DANCE, and a court dance at that. It would be nice if the video included a short clip or two of the basic figures (couples in line walking the "long step, two short steps" combination) to get a feel of what it is like. Chopin's polonaises are transformative, they are not really meant to be danced to anymore (which was a theme in his work, he also often took folk motives like mazurka and run with it to create something much elavated and complex). If you want a modern version of a polonaise composed as a dance check abovemnetioned Wojciech Kilar's polonaise written for the Pan Tadeusz movie (which was an adaptation of the Polish national epic poem).

Every Polish prom (studniówka - a huge dancing party 100 days before the final exams in the high school) starts with students dancing a polonaise in couples, it's a tradition. That's how I noticed a lot of instrumental music has similar form (because students like to choose nonobvious songs for that opening dance). For example you can easily dance polonaise to Jean Michel Jarre "Conquest of Paradise" :) In Poland the most famous polonaise is probably "Polonez Ogińskiego": kzbin.info/www/bejne/eovHmoxnpbmUiJY There's also of course "Heroic Polonez" by Chopin.

I was told a while ago by one of my piano teachers that songs have lyrics, therefore a Classical Piece or Classical Composition can't be called "Song". Great video though!

Actually, he has a polish name: Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin. "Frédéric" just appeard when he moved to France with his family.

His father was Frenchman teaching in Poland, his mother was Polish. First half his life Chopin spent in Poland.

It is not a case of genes, it is a case of music. Chopin's music is 100 % taken from Polish folk music and hearts. That is why it makes him Polish composer and he was also Polish patriot. It must be also said that those era Poland does not existed on a map. Country was divided in 3 pieces among Prussia, Russia and Austria for 123 years.

It is a beautiful elegant and proud Polish national dance that comes from the Polish nobility and aristocracy. Every ball in noble Poland began with this dance. The communists and the Bolsheviks stole Poland not only the eastern lands, but also a lot of Polish national haritage.

Why do many people pronounce BACH with K sound... ? in English language H sound exists (unlike French)... please do not hesitate to use that :) on the other hand if you (those pronounce in that way) you say "well it is a german word and I am not a German, so I pronounce that according to English language" .... then please pronounce that like BACK... not with open A sound... thanks...
