I bought a used 97 Firebird in 2004. It had 104,000 miles. It now has 250,000 miles and still runs great! The secret to making the 4l60e transmission last is to never drive in overdrive around town and service it every 30,000 miles. They are easy to drop the pan on and put a filter in.

Back when I was driving my 1952 Studebaker Champion, I removed the cooling fan. This gave me more horsepower and better gas mileage. Cooling was fine all year long in Pennsylvania, unless I was in city traffic. I've considered trading it for something newer, but as you pointed out it's hard to find something as much fun without spending a ton more money, and with it's high miles I wouldn't get much for it, even though it's a manual and a convertible. I'd almost rather find another one like it with low miles than spend the money for something less than 5 years old. And considering a new Camaro similarly equipped would run about $45000, I have a hard time justifying replacing mine.

I miss my 99 Formula Firebird.. (made in Canada) best car I ever owned. Dealership fked it up on purpose when taking it in for free oil change. They knew I pay for whatever until I said no to the $3900 transmission fix that I knew they fked up. The dealership mechanics got caught and some did jail time. Owner 8 years in prison for 2 million stolen money. Autopia of Escondido CA. Loved that car! Vroom!

My Lucy is a 2002 Pontiac Firebird with the V-6 in it. She's a base model. She is just shy of 144,000 miles. Oil/filter every 3,000 miles, tires rotated every 6,000 miles, just recently replaced the transmission filter/fluid, had to put in a catalytic convertor (in Southeastern AZ in the desert, we do not have to have emissions. :) Do a tune up every year, or when needed. She drives like a dream.

@Mike5833 жыл бұрын
I remember that well. I watched a video where they took an Explorer to a controlled area. They attached an explosive device to a steer tire. At a designated speed they blew the tire out. The driver knew what he was doing,& brought it to a safe stop! I think the others were over correcting, which caused them to lose control,resulting in them flipping!

Had a 1970 GTOs 455 with 4bbl QuadraJets, gas was under a dollar. Anyway, if I floor it. It create a big cloud of smoke all the way to like 50mph, and the fuel gauge would visibly move. But it required constant plugs, points and tuning. I would work on it every weekend to keep it running correctly. My Neighbors hate me. Later had a similar Firebird like the one you mention, while engine was reliable , the interior was always falling apart, and body had dozen of noises and plenty of water leaks when it rained. May be mine was built in US.

Original owner died and i bought it off the owners wife for 5k. Had 73k miles in it. Kept it in his house. Now 80. Almost prime condition. Small rip in leather seat and crack in body panel underneath the drivers side door. Everything works except the cd player. Curious how much a car like this would go for with everything fixed.
