PM64, TTYD, and SPM are a perfect trilogy. I don't care what anyone says. Sure, SPM's gameplay was different, but, for what it was doing, it actually did it quite well and I'd argue that, both in terms of gameplay and story, it was basically the proto-indie RPG (Undertale has a lot of SPM energy). Now, for PM64 and TTYD, I'd say there's a bit of a trade-off. PM64 has better level design, navigation, and boss fights, but TTYD has the better story and an overall better battle system. IMO, the ultimate Paper Mario game would be one that combines PM64's level design and movement options (getting rid of the dash was a mistake), TTYD's battle mechanics and characterization, and SPM's variety and storytelling into a tightly amazing package. Unfortunately, at this rate, we're probably going to get that when pigs fly.

I've been seeing more and more new channels pop up with great video essay content like this. You knocked it out of the park. you couldn't have made your point better, plus you were entertaining. I'm not going to go on but I could if I wanted to. Where I think you should be concerned is that your content is on par quality wise with everyone else's. Not everyone can do the things you do, but the people that can while they may be nice are ""technically"" competition. It's great to have something you're known for, it could be simple like the visual distinction of the Scott the Woz border, or something more complex like illustrated visuals for your B roll. I believe the best way for you to make it far on this platform is to have your viewers view you as "That guy who makes really good video essays and (BLANK)" I'm just spit balling here but I've always wanted to see a creator like you speak like that one deadly premonition character in the good part of that game, I don't know his name because i never played the game and I never will and I refuse to do more research than I already have, and I'm assuming you've never played it either. So Tl;dr Deadly premonition sucks farts but there's some bits where the MC guy talks to you as if you're his buddy in the passenger seat of his car. If you need an example try to look up that, but make sure not to subject yourself to too much of that game, for your own sake. not even worth playing for the bit. If you cant tell already I kinda wanna get into this whole content creation thing too someday soon, pretty well spent the last 5 years glued to KZbin video essays (Long story but I'd guesstimate I've sat through 3000 hours of video essays combined, i'm not even sure how it happened it just did). Not to say i'm the messiah of video essays and my word should be taken as gospel but I've seen great channels like yours putter out due to lack of traction, and i'd really hate to see that happen to you man. If you like making content as much as I think you do, keep making it. you're doing everything right right now, at least to me. I'm certain you have what it takes to make it far. we are in at the beginning of a KZbinr boom, and for you to have this much passion for your work at like, pocket change subscribers is incredible, i'm proud of you. Thanks! I appreciate the advice, but personally, while I do think having some level of branding is important. Be that your style of comedy, editing, or thumbnails. Ultimately I think KZbin is all about finding your niche and making the best videos you can in that category. In this case, the niche I’m going for is the guy who covers the history of video game series via bad skits. Hopefully, this video isn’t the best I have to offer. Hopefully, I can keep refining my content and style further. It would be kind of sad if I peaked on my first video. But for now, I’m just going to keep making the best content I can in this style, and not worry about using some cheap gimmicks to gain traction. I’m going to keep making video’s that I think are good and that I would want to watch, and hopefully, other people will too.

First of all, incredible video! Your humor was really good and you delivered the info in a fun and interesting way. Now I'd like to talk about Miyamoto!! Yay!! So ya know how Tanabe became a Producer starting with Super Paper Mario? You know whose place he took? Miyamoto. Miyamoto was a Producer on PM64 and TTYD. And ya know Miyamoto's "Only use mainline characters" quote? Check out this quote someone showed me the other day. It's a quote from Ryota Kawade during a developer interview for Paper Mario 64: "Since our first priority was to protect the atmosphere and setting of the Mario universe, we decided to only use characters from the mainline Mario games...I think that with Mario, sticking to the “main road” is the best. Plus, it would feel weird to have heavy themes like “betrayal” in the overall cozy, heartwarming atmosphere of the Mario world." ... Huh... that sounds a lot like what Miyamoto said about Sticker Star. One of the things I love most about TTYD is that, despite being so insane, wacky, and weird, it still feels like a Mario game. It fits into Mario's world incredibly well... And then you have Super Paper Mario, which while still a cool game, barely feels like Mario at all. Aside from some of Bowser's minions, nothing really feels Mario-y. You've got this insane prophetic plot with betrayals and brainwashing and all this wacky stuff. I think it's cool that it happened at all, but it definitely went a bit too far. I don't blame Tanabe specifically, but he once said in an interview that Toads are the "only friendly Mario species" (completely ignoring penguins, piantas, nokis, certain koopa troopas, bumpties, etc). The Paper Mario dev team definitely respected Miyamoto's wishes a bit too much, and that led to a lot of problems. The IP team may seem like a big problem from an outside point of view, but there's always been an IP team. The IP team may be stricter nowadays, but if you look at all the spin-offs around and since Sticker Star, they don't seem to have any of the same restrictions. My theory is that the dev team is just afraid to push against the dev team. Normally if something is rejected, you'd try to work around it until its accepted. But maybe the dev team just moves on when something isn't accepted. The PM64 quote I shared earlier implies that new characters like Clefts and Duplighosts fit into the mainline world of Mario just fine. It was probably a big goal of theirs to make sure the new species fit well into the Mario world. I do think there are restrictions on Toads, but they're definitely not as strict as the PM games make them out to be. Especially if the remake of Bowser's Inside Story was able to keep important Toad designs intact, including female and child toads, which are apparently forbidden. Regarding the gameplay of Sticker Star, I think it was doomed from the start. You can see that they were already using Stickers in the beta footage. I think it was really just partners, unique characters/species, and presentation that was changed. But who really knows? I like Sticker Star but it's an incredibly flawed game. The Paper Mario series really needs to step away from the weird battle gimmicks, because they're very alienating. They appeal to very niche groups of people and even then, they're riddled with poor design choices. Origami King actually has the WORST battle system of the modern games imo (except for during Boss battles, those are awesome). But it's still my favorite game of the 3. I'm holding out hope that they'll remake PM64 or TTYD, and that that will lead to a return of the classic battle system in the modern games. Maybe they'll loosen up on restrictions when the IP team allows them to keep most designs from those games the same. The world, level design, and atmosphere of the modern games is just fantastic though, so at least we'll keep getting that, if all else fails.

You bring up some good points, but like I said in the video, unfortunately, we will probably never know who's at fault, and personally, I don't really think you can stake the blame on a single person. Sticker Star did have stickers in the original demo, but in an interview with the developers on Iwata Asks, the devs said that the stickers were originally a very minor aspect of the game. It wasn't until Miyamoto's criticism that they decided to go "all out with stickers." If you're interested in reading through some of the interviews (because they are quite entertaining). I cited all the sources I used in my research in the description.

@Collosal Yeah, I forgot that the stickers didn't have as big of a focus. It's really a shame because you CAN do interesting stuff with Stickers, they just botched the execution to the point where barely anyone can enjoy it. I would've made it more like the original PM battle system, but have stickers act as items/badges. And make Thing stickers able to be used infinitely using a "Sticker Power" meter. And the catch would be that you have limited space for Thing stickers and have to choose which ones you want to be active in Battle. There are infinite ways they could've handled sticker gameplay and they just handled it so poorly. And the fact that Color Splash has a lot of the same issues is just baffling to me, because they had so much time to fix it. Really hope Paper Mario makes its way out of the pit of bad gimmicks soon.

I agree, but unfortunately, Miyamoto and Tanabe both share the same idea of new games in a series needing some new innovation (gimmick), so it's unlikely that will happen any time soon.

As an old Paper Mario fan, it's truly painful to see the classic Paper Mario may never come back. I'm, somewhat, glad the newer games have a place in the fandom, but I have no interest in the new games. And while Paper Mario has spiritual successes, like Bug Fable, it' s just not the same to me. I want these adventures with Mario characters, which it looks like we may never get again.

This is a really great video (deserves more views too)! Also very well edited, and I enjoyed most of the jokes/skits. KZbin recommended this one to me so hopefully that's a sign of things to come. As for Paper Mario, I can't completely say what I think of the series since I haven't played anything past Super. I heard from a friend that Origami King was decent enough, but the ones between that I personally have no interest in, nor does anyone else I know. I honestly do think part of the series decline for a while was primarily Miyamoto, since he's had a history of being somewhat intrusive and overbearing with Mario in particular. Hopefully things will improve for Paper Mario going forward though.

Personally Super Paper Mario is absolutely the last classic game in my book. I don't define classic PM by only its gameplay, but its tone, character, worldbuilding, storytelling etc. I don't see two classic games, one middle child and three modern games, I see three classic and three modern. For whatever reason i just can't stand the white outline aesthetic they have on all paper characters, starting with sticker star, it makes mario more like a sticker and not like paper by making the er-hem "switch" from black to white just like that. What's even more confusing and frustrating is that Paper mario is a spinoff, a side game I think it can use a little bit of story mr. Miamoto. Mario 64 and all the other mainline games virtually don't have/need story for them to work. All we ever wanted was more of the same with a new spin on mechanics and abilities and it would've sold just as much if not better. At the end of the day it was both parties responsible for why paper mario is the way it is, but Mr. Miamoto has final say, so I have a hunch he had a bigger piece to this mess, I'm just saying.
