Joel: I’m gonna suffer a lot throughout this Also Joel: it’s gonna be great, it’s gonna be fun!

i think what makes rf kuang's writing style so compelling is that she is very aware and educated on the things that she wanted to discuss in the story. she took the time to read and study so many resources to fully understand each element she wanted to incorporate in the books. and i believe that when you understand something very well, you can explain it easily in your own way and make others want to listen to what you have to say.

I read the burning god over the space of two days as we were driving back from our staycation holiday. I finished it about an hour away from home and then proceeded to stare out of the window for the rest of the journey as I literally couldn't bring myself to do anything else after.

I agree with how much history is westernized and how much they leave out. Im from the US and when I tell you our history curriculum is a joke...its a goddamn joke. As an African-American I am still learning about black peoples role in building this country and the suffering experienced and still being experienced. Even other cultures are barely or not touched on at all. I know nothing of Imperial China or Japan and I had to do my own research on Egyptian mythology and the African empires. Theres so much to learn and not enough they teach kids in school! And all for the sake of making colonizers look like the good guys.
@createdbychanel89604 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the only time I learned about other cultures was in a World History Honors class that the parents at my school tried to get taken off of the course list because it was "propaganda'. Why did they find it to be propgranda? Because it talked about Isla,, how it was made, and what it actually is so they got upset that instead of them being portrayed as crazy people they were portrayed as a peaceful religion and society that helped build the world as we know it.

As a Latin American majoring in History, I totally agree about what you said on how westernalized our History is, like even here in Brazil we learn more about Europe than our own country. Also as someone who is mainly studying Persian History I can say that the system makes it very hard for anyone who doesn't want to study the "main stream" History, like my teacher literaly sent me an e-mail warning me about the difficulties I was going to face studying non Western History (He also studies Persia). And this reading vlog just made me more exited to read this trilogy. Hope it comes to Brazil soon. Sorry if there is any mistakes English is not my first language and I'm dyslexic

When you said you were gunna read the characters guide at the back of the Dragon Republic, I started panicking. Cos I did that with a book once and it basically spoiled the book I was about to read, cos it was at the back so I guess they assumed I'd read the guide AFTER reading the book.

Hi Joel, I read the entire Poppy War trilogy after watching this video. This trilogy was so satisfying to read, especially as it deconstructs imperialism, generational trauma, and racism in a satisfying way. Kitay's glowup in the Dragon Republic was awesome, and like you I suffered through the Burning God. I recommend the trilogy to anyone who reads this comment. Kuang is a phenomenal writer and these books will break your heart in the best way possible.

(or maybe its because we've been colonized in the past??) yeah i went on a bit of tangent 😂✌️

The more videos I watch from you the more I'm positive you'd like my current read actually 😂😂 Obasan by Joy Kogawa. The writing is wonderful and musical in such a weighty way, it touches on a ton of really intense subjects and gets into the government workings of the time a bit, at least from where I'm currently at just having ended chapter 12 but like.... Yeah I feel as though you'd enjoy it a good deal and I would 10000% recommend this to anyone that can handle it, as long as you look up trigger warnings for it first because there's definitely a decent deal of that in there xD Anyway shutting up now lmfao I could talk about this book for ages but I don't wanna spoil it for you, or anyone else for that matter because seriously THIS HECKIN BOOK.
