Weird observation here: A lot of the major female writers, directors and technical people coming up in the Japanese animation industry right now-Sayo Yamamoto, Eunyoung Choi, Rie Matsumoto, Mari Okada and so forth-would have been coming of age or at the very least growing up in that period, or first breaking into animation in the case of some of the older guard. I wonder what impact that had on them.

I'm glad you put in the time to research this topic. It was a worth-while video! I have a couple of book suggestions that I think can help you form some conclusions about the popularity of the beautiful fighting girl characters of the 90s. These were on the syllabus of a college class I took on the culture of anime: Saito Tamaki's "Beautiful Fighting Girl" and Ian Condry's "The Soul of Anime." Both are just about $20, but since they're technically textbooks, you might be able to torrent them somewhere. Anyway, enjoy!

I notice you make a very common mistake regarding the term "strong female character". It doesn't mean a female character that is literally strong or powerful and able to defeat her enemies. It's talking about a strong character i.e a well-developed and nuanced character. This mistake is pretty common and, almost paradoxically, it actually limits writers. They hear people asking for "strong female characters" and just make characters that are badasses. Nothing wrong with women being badasses obviously, but there's more to being a good character than being physically strong. Though to be fair that's a very common problem with men as well. Many writers are more interested in making "cool" badasses than putting any nuance in there.

Wasn't '91 the last year of Japan's bubble economy? I took an anime class this past year where we focused heavily on women in manga and anime, and the professor focused heavily on the presentation of women post bubble collapse, namely stuff like Sailor Moon and Rayearth. He lectured a lot on how the economic collapse lead to a disrupted society, and how a disrupted society yields a disrupted "text." We watched stuff like Bubble Gum Crisis and even some much earlier stuff like Cutie Honey.

I remember discovering this trend through opposite means. After watching Black Lagoon and really liking the character of Revy I basically tried to find anime that were specifically about action girls. This did lead me to watch a few late 80s and early 90s OVAs. Usually to my dissapointment since as you say the characters and stories weren't really that well fleshed out. But I still think this trend did somehow tranfer into later time periods. I mean we had characters like Motoko (who is a lot more fleshed out in the adaptations than in the manga imo), Koko from Jormungand, Utena besides Utena herself had Juri, every Gainax show had one or more strong female characters. After Gunbuster with Noriko we had Misato (best girl) and Asuka in Eva (sure, they have their deep traumas on top, but every character has and I'd say that just adds to them), Haruko, Nono (neither of those end up with a guy), Yoko and Pandy & Stocking or in newer shows the characters in Kill la Kill and Kyousougiga. We also had female characters that weren't exactly fighters but were strong in terms of how wise and skilled they were like Yuuko from xxxHolic, Kino from Kino's Journey (who actually does fight my bad) Watashi from Jinrui or Erin. The author of Erin also had another adaptation of her book Seirei no Moribito which featured a strong female character who was also percieved as rather wise and mature. Abe and Ueda made some shows with almost pure female casts that weren't even sexualized at all like Lain, Haibane Renmei and Niea_7. I think the trend just became part of anime instead of dying out. I mean we have a show like Casshern Sins where the guys are badass but the girls just as well. Every now and then we do have a show like this and I'd now since for me strong, sexy, ass-kicking or personality-wise strong women characters are like what cute girls are to others probably. This also makes me think that it could have been just because men found those girls attractive and they kind of cut on to that trend, since I know I find those characters attractive as well (albeit lots of the early 90s ones you mentioned were too much on the cute instead of on the sexy side, plus the designs were often rather generic). So I wouldn't be suprised if that was a big reason.

I mean, not much has changed. The east culture values patriarchy more than the west, it also has a rooted culture on deeming women and children as second class citizens. This is because the majority of the leaders and people with power in the east are really old. Talking about complete generations apart from the modern Asian individual who more often than not, holds a more liberal view than their older counterpart.

I wonder if it was creators less following the market and more just doing their own thing, like every Miyazaki film has a strong main girl and it isn't about thinking it'll sell, it's just the kind of story he wants to tell. The light novel daughteru stuff we get nowadays is purely for the audience. Makes me think it's an inflating budget thing, it's harder to take risks and give artists leeway.
@FirstFallSnow8 жыл бұрын
Well yeah, this kind of shit is why people in and out of Japan thinking that otakus are horrible creeps. Even if today it's gotten better but you can't get rid of that, and let's face it, online nerd culture is still pretty skeevy, it's just called trolling now. It's getting better though. And by the way, STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER DOESN'T MEAN LITERALLY STRONG IT MEANS WELL WRITTEN, REALISTIC FEMALE CHARACTERS.
@Jepze1588 жыл бұрын
But i like my woman as dominating
@basition8 жыл бұрын
never understood that phrase, most characters are poorly written and realized, man and woman alike. Where you see a good male character is likely where you see a good female character.
@tomeboaventura90548 жыл бұрын
Then say GOOD or WELL WRITTEN FEMALE CHARACTER instead of STRONK!
@nomukun11388 жыл бұрын
No it does mean strong. Not necessarily muscled, but powerful and able to accomplish stuff. It means not passive and powerless. There are strong female characters who are written both poorly and unrealistically. And online nerds are not all skeevy trolls. Don't project.
@FirstFallSnow8 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't. A strong character is a believable, realistic person who has a place within the narrative and a weak character is either unbelievable or is superfluous. It's the most basic rule of writing, characters need to be real and bring something to the table. A kick ass accomplished woman is great and all, but if she could get cut from the story without affecting the ending then all she did was waste time. If she doesn't act like a person or her motivations don't make sense then the story suffers. Male, female, robot, alien; it doesn't matter. The problem is there is a lack of female characters in most mainstream media, and the ones that are there are token (you know, 5 male leads and then the one female) or are just meaningless. I didn't say all nerds online were trolls. I just said there are a lot of them there. And everywhere. It's the internet.

Geez, this has been on my 'Watch Later' for 8 years already? Interesting observation. Like you said in the video, though, it's early '90s so a bunch of these are adaptations of earlier manga or whatever. I think that's the big hint to where this came from: the delinquent girls, or sukeban as they're often called, became a big in Japanese culture in the '70s and '80s, so in the early '90s we still got 'leftovers' of women kicking a lot of ass.
@Haruhater8 жыл бұрын
Does Digi just not watch classic anime in general? Women and girls being lead characters and being positive role models without needing the support of any male was one of the most unique and appealing hallmarks of anime and manga since the medium's inception! Anime used to have more brand new independent aspirational female lead characters produced in a year than ALL of western art produced in a DECADE. It's only now that anime started pandering to the absolute bottom of the barrel of japanese society around the turn of the decade due to economic reasons that we are living in this anime dark age where almost every series that isn't aimed squarely at kids or women (and sometimes even those, shit's insane) is aimed at developmentally stunted manchildren who at worst despize women in order to rationalise their own inadequacies and at best are mortally terrified of any woman with her own seperate wants, needs, desires, expectations, or just general competence in anything or a backbone. Whereas in previous years a female character would not be celebrated unless she was absolutely out of the league of the audience watching it. Shit is depressing.
@tomoj92058 жыл бұрын
Roger Ebert actually commented on this phenomenon in his review of Ghost in the Shell. I've always remembered it because "girls kicking ass" is pretty much one of the main reasons I watch anime personally, and I find the explanation he quotes interesting. www.rogerebert.com/reviews/ghost-in-the-shell-1996 "The movie uses the film noir visuals that are common in anime, and it hares that peculiar tendency of all adult animation to give us women who are(a) strong protagonists at the center of the story, and (b) nevertheless almost continuously nude. An article about anime in a recent issue of Film Quarterly suggests that to be a “salary man'' in modern Japan is so exhausting and dehumanizing that many men (who form the largest part of the animation audience)project both freedom and power onto women, and identify with them as fictional characters. That would help explain another recent Japanese phenomenon, the fad among (straight) teenage boys of dressing like girls."

I wonder if we'll ever see an anime that staunchly opposes the idea of pandering to the base male otaku audience? I certainly don't wish for that to become the norm, because I like shows that pander to me! But I still think that would be interesting to see. There are certainly shows that expand beyond that simple gimmick, but even the best examples still seem to lean on it in order to garner favor for their more serious themes and topics. On an unrelated and already played-to-death note; I gotta talk about that bait and switch thumbnail. Seeing this video with past and present digi made me realize why I miss the pre-caveman era.
