in the UK it seems to be a lot more posh than here in the netherlands. dont worry we get enough posh ones too, but we also get complete oposites. we wear suits, we wear ties, but they are def not the posh kinds. Think large beer stains, seams torn at the arms, missing buttons, split pants, and jackets that have likely never been cleaned let alone been to a dry cleaner (a lot of the student rowing clubs dont even allow you to wash them, so its not uncommon for them to have mold in them0. just to get the idea, searth "Varsity Netherlands," the oldest rowing (and sports in general) competition in the netherlands. you will find photos of a few rowers, men and women in nothing but their underwear and ties ready to swim towards their clubs winning boat, fields of stapeded and thrown beer cups, people throwing lumps of grass and clay, and on top of all of that you will spot a few fighting in our own style of wrestling. Quite a few in that crowd are posh kids let loose, but there are plenty who are just regular kids. if you send a kid from the henley to there i think they would get an heart attack.

To be fair, the OTHER thing cox'es do is try to psych out the other nearby rowers - in particular, your opposition's 2 stern rowers, who generally set the rhythm of the rowing for the entire boat. Or at least, that's what our coxswain offered to while we were rowing in the Pacific Coast Rowing Championship. (Spoiler: we declined, and we lost, but it was OK because all 3 boats in our group qualified for nationals....and none of us went, as it was too expensive to send the Freshman teams back to the East Coast.) (EDIT - although perhaps that's where the "no swearing" rule the guy was talking about comes from - it's there to keep the coxwains from engaging in psychological warfare with other boats.) Ah, yes: Freshman lightweight 8 rowing: aka "wow, you guys managed to fill out an entire team!"
