the Posies are one of the best, most influential and critical bands in the development of melodic indie/power pop. They were over-shadowed by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, etc and the grunge scene - not surprising and perfectly understandable at the time as it was a paradigm shift in pop music and they are all legit artists in their own right. But the Posies music has stood the test of time and has a classic quality that will never be lost. Tight riffs & melodies, wonderful harmonies with great rhythmic variation and soaring, poignant vocals. Their competence, quality and contribution has been proven by being part of the re-formed Big Star, R.E.M. and many, many other high quality projects. Their legacy is growing. Quality and passion stand the test of time.

It’s awesome how Auer and Stringfellow have paid homage to Alex Chilton and Big Star. Their tribute performance at Ardent studios is truly remarkable.

I have been spreading the word about the Posies since they started performing with Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens in early 90s.

Every few months I come back to this post / video to remind myself what made me fall in love with them. They were in their prime right here. Classic lineup, classic song. GREAT performance. My favorite part is Jon's laugh at the end.... He knew it was pretty damn good, too.

Jon Auer had the "unfortunate" problem of NOT sounding like Kurt, Eddie, or Layne (Staley) which is what the recording folks wanted at that time...Such a pity because I think that the Posies are an amazing band (awesome live and Mr. Auer is mind-boggingly scary on guitar!) and deserved much more than they received....But, fear not--they're still out there and as good as ever!

I agree that that's what the record label wanted, but i do not believe that that discredits Kurt, Eddie or Layne as legitimately fantastic vocalists. Tons of other bands at that time that i know of were absolutely fantastic got overlooked due to the major label craze with PJ, Nirvana and AiC type sounds. Truly, Dinosaur Jr., the afformentioned Posies, and i guess i can throw in bands that aren't really grungey but deserve a mention, such as Janes Addiction and Infectious Grooves.

I always thought the same, they're voices and melodies were just a little too pretty for people at the time. Not grunge enough I guess. I saw them many times in the 90s Fucking awesome show every time.

Listening in ‘93. Saw them in Wales in ‘93 with Superchunk and Teenage Fanclub. Don’t think Jon had the best time but to his right in the crowd there were about twenty of us pogoing like mad and singing. I’m still listening now. I’d still pogo if I saw you live too. Maybe not as long like.

This is hands down the greatest band to never "make it big". They deserve to be huge, but at the same time I love that I can talk music with people and sell the awesomeness of The Posies.

While I agree that the Posies should’ve become big time ballers, my picks for that title in the ‘90s would be Catherine Wheel, Luscious Jackson, and Plexi, followed by Swervedriver, Curve, Failure, This Picture, Digable Planets, Quicksand, the Posies, Velocity Girl, the Veldt, Nudeswirl, and Acetone.

this is a highly personal song to me. the meaning i take from it, its about childhood and family. the lies, the things the people who "love you" never tell you, hurt so much more than the truth. but you rise from the pain and become something new. you burn and shine.

What a shame they never really got their due or made it bigger. Frosting On the Beater is still an amazing album all these decades later. 13 year old me discovered the cassette and 40 year old me is still jamming and loving it.

the POSIES had equally the talent of the commercially-acclaimed Seattle acts of the 90s. truth be told, I own many more Posies records than Nirvana :D - most of us die-hard music fans appreciate the stuff that isn't constantly on the air-waves. Frosting on the Beater remains one of the top albums of the 90s in my mind.

Why wasn't this band bigger? If it wasn't for KZbin I wouldn't have even heard of this band. I nvr. heard them on MTV or the radio, either, (even though now I see clips of them on 120 min. and such). They're like Dinosaur Jr. (not as great, mind you), but still a very solid band which should've gotten more recognition and thanks to the Web, they are...better late than nvr., I suppose.

Known facts: Jon has said it was a musical response to a family secret that had at last been revealed to him. Personal suspicion: the secret was Native American ancestry that, for some reason, somebody was ashamed of and kept secret-which was actually a bigger shock to Jon than not being “white and ordinary,” and the only truly shameful thing going on.

In terms of vocals? Yes. Hell yes. J Mascis gets annoying after a while. Guitar work, I'd still have to give it to Dinosaur Jr. this one song is absolutely incredible (blows away most of Dinosaur Jr's stuff), but most of The Posies stuff is based on nice pop songwriting and great hooks. So which band is better? Hard to say. Dinosaur Jr. sure as hell had a greater impact on music though, which is a shame, because music could use more bands like The Posies.
