Two things: 1 - 'populism' is defined as putting ordinary people's rights above those of the wealthy, the powerful, the elite. However, it seems to me that this definition has become obsolete in common usage. Don't we now use the term to refer to the assertion of the rights of uninformed people over those of informed people? 2 - until the discipline of critical thinking supersedes (by gaining more respect) the following of beliefs, we are doomed. If something stands up to scrutiny, then fine, but it it does not, then rethink. The amount of people who passionately believe things with negligible or no critical research into the subject is truly alarming. It seems to me to be the main theme that informs the most destructive behaviours we are witnessing today.

Hell even up to like 2015 there was still a tiny sliver of hope. Things were getting bad of course, we knew it. But it wasn't *hopeless* like it is today... A decade ago I could afford to have my own apartment near the downtown of a major city. Drove a used car in good shape. Had solid emergency savings, and I could pretty much afford to whatever I wanted downtown at anytime. Catch a show? No problem. Festivals? Hell yeah! Watching a movie for the 2nd time at a nice movie theater? Yessir. I make WAY more nowadays and the most I can afford in that area now is a single bedroom! I now rent a bedroom in a different state. I can afford my room, car, and the bare essentials. That's it. Things were getting worse but I genuinely hoped the 2020s we would turn things around.

I wish average people would think that far. Usually they have much simpler ideas: "What's the price of gasoline?", "How often can I afford to fly into vacation?", "How can I maximise my income and minimise work hours?", stuff along these lines. These simple ideas are the reason why populism works.

Not a chance. All the key insights into the human condition are many thousands of years old and have been covered by anything from the biggest ideological and religious movements, to our most influential thinkers. Not one of them have been applied in any lasting way but always morphed into something ugly, usually with breakneck speed. We'll wrestle with these things for as long as we exist, but much more than anything; we are what we are. A simple primate that primarily responds to stimuli that align with our most base instincts. Do not confuse our impressive ability to make tools and analyse reality with a fundamental change of our species.

Their entire political culture depends on achieving internal coherence through externalizing frustrations on an arbitrarily chosen enemy. Russian culture doesn't have any ethical values to hold on to--just the glorification of the state. You can't make your personal equilibrium dependent on what others do. Cultures tend to be very resilient, in spite of wars, in spite of regime changes, And in spite of economic downfalls, culture persists. I don't think we're looking at a total collapse of society as we know it, but the more ideas like this spread the more that can be done to change the status quo for the better. It's not some binary idea of either it's too late or it's not - the status quo *is* changing, so what are we going to do about it? I resist the idea that there is some "essential truth" out there that the public are just too stupid to perceive. However, I have no problem believing that most people are focused with getting on with their own lives, and don't have the time or energy to cultivate a super sophisticated political worldview. My assessment is that the leadership class just aren't doing their job. Whatever you can say about the ordinary punter on the street, it's the elites' JOB to be on top of this. "You had one job!" Leadership isn't about securing privilege for your faction. It's about maintaining the viability of the system you oversee. And our leadership just aren't doing it. You can't blame some random slob on the street for that. I kind of think the elites overinterpreted the significance of Liberalism. It's not about popular participation in leadership. It's about leadership on behalf of the people. Liberal elites think they can go around behaving like ordinary street people, as if their privilege didn't also come with some very specific responsibilities.

The world has reached a crisis of huge proportions due to competition of groups versus cooperation. What I call ultra-capitalism and an attitude of exceptionalism within the USA and elitism is shared by other nations as well and not only does it cause migration and poverty throughout the world but it sparks wars. Rather than reinforcing nationalism we should be earnestly forging cooperation on pollution, energy, and food/water security. This means selflessness, not selfishness. This means more socialism and less capitalism. This means more honesty and transparency and this will require dramatically improved or updated democracy.

Democracy is a form of governance that works when people have a stake in their society and want to have a stake in their society. Too often as it looks nowadays many people are content with pawning their stake in society off to autocrats for shiny trinkets, trading freedom for a gilded cage. It must be comforting, not needing to think for themselves. Or as the quote goes, ignorance is bliss.

Thank you, Vlad. Of all your talks this one is (IMO) by far the best and, on a personal level, the most helpful: It places the last 30+ crazy years into a kind of flow-of-history context that, at last, starts to make some sense of the rapidly accellerating mess. It's strangely reassuring as a result, even though nothing has changed except perspective. What I'd really like now, if you can arrange it, is access to the history books that will be written about these times 200 years from now. A big ask I know, but...

As a US Republican turned proud and vocal democrat during the Trump-era, how do you see the US 2024 election unfolding? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to hear your take... In a polarized landscape, where people get their news from separate ecosystems, where people distrust the headlines and facts that don't conform to their own internal narrative, and are radicalized by social media algorithms, how does a democracy in crisis reinvigorate itself? how do we re-affirm democratic norms and values when others are eager to set a torch to traditional institutions?

As an Australian with Southeast Asian heritage I feel this fragmentation and the pull from the side of the western/US/ European side and the very un-colonised side of my family in Thailand. Many of the younger generation of this elite have studied in the west, returned, and have come to want a new model of Thai society that cannot yet occur, if ever, if the proposed model is an imitation or mimicry of neo-liberalism (i.e a republic). Your analysis does help me to see why there is still such resistance to change in that country.

TRT was a complex alliance between egalitarian modernisers (including some October people) and people who just wanted an ongoing unequal society in which they would get a bigger share of the pie. Move Forward might have a platform that is more capable of producing change for the better. But it will need to have some kind of accommodation with the monarchy.

Yes, I think that is my point@@MrToradragon and by becoming more western, what stabilising aspects of a society might be lost, what gained? Unfortunately for some of my family, they are unable to continue to discuss these issues in a rational and calm way and seem at a stalemate.

@MrToradragon Жыл бұрын
@@KhunAdam I am afraid that I don't have enough information about Thailand and it's political system and society to say what could be lost and what could be gained. But from the history of Europe and it's transition to republics after WWI and to smaller extent after WWII it seems like societies in republic are bit less stable and more willing to establish authoritarian or even totalitarian regimes (or maybe it happened as it is perhaps much easier under republic). So stability of society could be at stake, groups that would want to take full control of the state could emerge in revolution, separatist movements could gain momentum. Or somebody could abuse this situation to became dictator, that had happened in Europe after WWI and WWII. Another danger is that while elites could already be ready for republic, most of the country still would not be and then it could run into problems that I talk about in first paragraph. Another problem is that unlike in monarchy where head od state changes every few decades, in republics head of state changes every few year, so there is almost constantly opened contest for succession which can deeply divide population as we have seen recently in the USA. In monarchies you don't pic who will be the next king or queen, it is set so population will not be that much divided. Especially if king/queen is not involved in everyday politics. Another, rather minor, issue could be that society, even thou it will became republic, will remain mentally stuck in monarchy. That for example happened in Czechoslovakia, the transition from monarchy to republic was exceptionally smooth and seen at the time as temporary measure before it will be decided by assembly whether the country will be monarchy, republic or whatever, but then they somehow in euphoria forgot to address this issue at all and they had elected president by acclamation and so. So the country remained republic, but without true republicans (not the party), and significant amount of rituals and traditions connected before with emperors and kings were just transferred to president. And it remained so to till these days as people still see president as some sort of monarch, maybe it is not helping that the presidential office is in Prague Castle which was seat of kings, maybe it is not helping that Inauguration seems almost like miniature coronation and is held in same hall that the coronations were. Now west toady has some issues that are causing problems and we still have not resolved them, I would say that while we make progress in some fields we are regressing in other. But in general if political system would, regardless of head of state, became more like western democracies, it would lead, most likely, to increase of personal freedoms, rule of law, most likely, it could reduce involvement of state in personal lives (now that is something I think we are struggling with now), in theory it should provide grater opportunities. On the other hand poorly executed, i.e. too rapid transition or shock therapy, could lead to messy situation and rise of oligarchy. That would not be good for country and it's people. Another problem with "westernization" is that by blind adoption of western trends country and society could easily lose it's essence. As well it is necessary to bear in mind that western systems are rooted in Christian traditions and philosophy that mixes old Greek and Roman philosophy, with Christianity and enlightenment as well as some other old traditions, while Thailand is predominantly Buddhist country and some things and concepts that could work in western world, or even to be more specific in protestant countries, will most likely not work in Buddhist country like Thailand.
