@@VladVexler as for Mark Galeotti, as a historian he should know that about 85 years ago people like Hitler and Gobels were talking similar stories like him : Russia is a house of cards and nobody likes Stalin and it will be easy pray for the Germans . That story ended with the Red Army entering Berlin and with Hitler and Gobels committing suicide in their bunker . Probably this time the Russians will end up in London. I will like to see what Mr. Galotti says when the aRussians are in front of his house ! Naratives and wishful thinking don’t win wars. Mr. Galeotti as a “ great historian “ should know that too .

Hey, thanks a lot for the guest! Galeotti's moderate optimism has cheered me up a ton. Especially that what Vlad calls "democratic decline" Mark calls "a crisis of democracies". It's not that it just sounds better, it's that a crisis implies there's a way out😅, or even better a development. Also it's good to see that Vlad himself was cheerful and energetic throughout the conversation. Looking forward for the war gamification video.

You're probably right, he must have been, I used "good to see" figuratively, as I usually listen, not watch, so my conclusion was based on the sound of their voices, that gave me the impression that both speakers were exited and happy to have this conversation and I missed all the possibile visual clues of exhaustion towards the end of it.

I am with Vlad on this one. 1) Putin doesn't look at the Baltic states as part of the West but as part of Russia's domain that temporarily got away. 2) He most definitely wants to take them out of NATO. 3) There is also very little doubt in my mind that he is eager to challenge article 5. Certainly not via Ukraine-like full scale invasion but some small incursion to "defend" "oppresses"majority Russian town/village - just enough to violate their territorial integrity but small enough to tempt Trump-like figures in the West to let it go and thus destroy NATO cohesion. Why wouldn't he? He can see Western leaders are spineless, divided and easily intimidated via nuclear threats.
@larsrons79372 ай бұрын
1, 2, 3, I agree with you on all parts. If Mark means "don't want to take on (open war with) the _full force_ of NATO" I agree with him. But I'm sure he very much want to challenge Article 5 in any way he can, as long as he thinks he can get away with it (f.ex. if USA won't reacti and rest of NATO countries are 'split'). If he can, he will. He knows he can't fight a united NATO, but he might be able to fight a smaller part of NATO. I believe the threat is real.

To me, trying to understand the Russian state from an existential perspective feels like peeling and eating a raw onion so it was a pleasure to watch two experts discuss it with such comfort. The "weaponisation of inconvenience" is also an interesting idea, will be interesting to see how that plays out in practice.
