Hey gang! As I mentioned in this video, I've featured the five pentatonic fingerings/positions several times before on the LNL channel, so I DID NOT feature them verbatim again in this video (we've already done that before and more than once), so if you need that information - be sure to do a channel search on the channel for "pentatonic" and you'll find the other lessons that tackle the basics and other lessons/ideas surrounding this scale. This lesson is more for players that already have the basic shapes under their fingers, so if you still need to learn those shapes, there are plenty of other lessons on the channel that will help. Good luck and don't be afraid to use the search feature on the channel to help you find what you're looking for. \m/ ROCK ON \m/

Learning the 5 positions and being able to float through them ala Eric Johnson/Joe Bonamassa and Richie Kotzen is probably one of the best skills you can learn imo. Doing that in Major/Minor and Dominant (ala Jeff Beck) becomes even more useful when you start adding colorful notes like the blues scales but also the diatonic stuff (ala Guthrie) an you can modify that for more exotic scales (ala Marty Friedman's newer style runs)

Your best lesson yet. Thanks David. Your tone is excellent. You got my foot tapping without a drum track. The lava lamp is a nice bonus.

Great Late Night Lesson "As Always"!!!! I personally admire your playing ability and think you do a GREAT job at getting the point of the lesson across clearly. Some people on here need to realize you are giving the building blocks of how to get where you are, and that doesn't mean if they play the 5 positions....Its gonna sound like the way you play it 😂 I mean HONESTLY "KZbin instructional vids are simply a roadmap of direction. But if you don't know how to drive you are going to have a hard time getting there!!!! As you know, Things take time and lots of practice to get to play as fluid as you do. There is one true fact about learning how to play and that is knowing what to play is teachable. But having the ability cannot be given away. That's what takes the most work of all. The smooth and quick picking fast finger movement and plain and simply Killer Chops. Really the techniques seem endless. We focus soo much on the fret hand and where to go to play something. The picking hand falls way behind in development imo. Anyhow ✌️ Sorry for the Novel but it had to be said. Look forward to more videos...

Hey what's up. This was such an eye opener when I learned back in the 1900s 😅. I base my whole style of playing of these 5 positions, I know and love learning other scales but I always come back to this. Cool lesson and great review. I hope a viewer here gets the same experience, doors will fly open once this is under your belt

I recall a time many moons ago when I relied heavily on one minor pentatonic box position to get through a solo. There were a few other scales here and there, but my default position was mostly that one particular box. Because of that, most of my solos were short, simple, landed mostly on the roots and 5ths, and long improvisational jams were rare. That's why it's so important to expand your knowledge of the fretboard and break out of that dreaded box! You will have more tools available to you and will be able to take your solos into new, fresh and previously uncharted territories.

I remember learning the G major scales all the way up the neck and my teacher at the time just had me increasing the Metronome and I got to where I could play them really clean and fast and I was like OK so now what do I do with them and he said they just connect at some point and I was like gee thanks! Thank you for this lesson. I’m excited to work on it. My teacher was actually really good, but some things I think he had arrived at in his own kind of way, and could not explain to me in a way that made sense to my beginner mind.

Love your tone. When I learned to play leads (50+ years ago) there was no internet (or home computers or cell phones for that matter). Just ears and records. Johnny Winter And Live was my bible. It did not take me long to figure out major and minor pentatonics (of course, it was not until years later I learned that was the name - I just thought of it as the "the good notes". The "bluesy good notes" and the "country good notes"). And Johnny seamlessly switched back and forth between them constantly, like a "call and response" sort of thing. I never learned about the "boxes" or "positions" until years later either. I somehow got it in my head that "the right way to play" was to find ways to keep all notes 2 frets apart. Which meant moving up and down the neck as you move from string to string. So I ended up learning scales patterns that spanned 3 or 4 "positions or boxes" at a time. I do know the "positions" today, but I tend not to play that way - I kind of like the "whole neck" approach.

Paul McCartney & David Gilmour know how to switch from major tonal center to Minor tonal center = Change of Mood technique used in classical. Angus Young often switches between major pentatonic to minor pentatonic. The Guitar Solo for Comfortable Numb switches from key of D major to relative B minor Key = Change of Mood = Change of Tonal Center. The Beatles song When I'm 64 the first section is in a Major key then the second section is in the RELATIVE Minor Key = change of mood = change of Tonal Center. David Gilmour often does this in his guitar solos changing the TONAL Center like in the guitar solo TIME there are two sections, Comfortable Numb first solo has two sections, etc This is mastery of how to use the pentatonic scale to know how to use the pentatonic scale to change its mood. Most guitarists play pentatonic boxes but don't know how to play "ADAPTIVE Pentatonic boxes" Adaptive meaning: including other chord tones, tonal centers like MODES, or non-diatonic notes that aren't in the pentatonic boxes that are playing with the chord changes. In order to play with the chord changes you have to play "adaptive pentatonic boxes" most guitarist omit the adaptive part.

Great lesson! Thanks for posting , another thing that helped me was learning the Am Penetonic on each individual string going up the neck. This really helped me visualize the entire fretboard and get out of the box.

That was probably the best lesson I’ve ever seen on the pentatonic scales. The key is to get comfortable with each of the 5 positions and then create licks and motifs and connect them. One technique you demonstrated, that Eric Johnson often uses, is extending positions using his pinky. Thanks for this lesson and please keep them coming 😊

Great lesson, Dave! Your viewers will get heads and shoulders above most just by knowing shape 5, 1 and 2! Licks for days! I remember a guitar player magazine back in the 90s with an article from Jon Finn, in his first years teaching at Berklee. He shared his geometric theory on the pentatonic shapes. It blew my mind as a young player. He breaks the pentatonic into string sets of two. So, the high E and B string would be a set. Keep it up, bro!

Have never understood why the pentatonic scale was created .. just the major scale minus 2 and 4, right? 3 and 7 stay put, either straight or flatted for a minor or blues progression. Thank you David for all your episodes!

The 5 Dominant Pentatonic position/shapes would also be extra cool. It's so useful and not many players know it or how cool it is over a IV chord. Especially over the "Santanas Secret Chord Progression" (aka; Dorian), and other little nifty spots the Major and minor Pentatonic doesn't fit as well. As always, great lesson David!🥰😊

@knightfall93945 ай бұрын
You’re literally watching a lesson (emphasis on that word) video and you’re bitching about talking, i hope you realize that lesson content isnt always gonna be scale diagrams and shapes, if you actually pay attention and dont have the attention span of a mouth breathing simpleton you’d learn something valuable. He tells you what notes make up that scale at 2:58, thats a great starting point for someone and is valuable info, i would really hope you know the notes on your fretboard and can go from there and connect the dots. what he gets into at 3:04 is even more good info and the diagram he shows at 4:24 is extremely helpful if you arent completely stupid
