I was in the US Military. My partner was a Civilian Medic and Biologist who worked in Warzones. We watched Violet Evergarden last year, and cried through it, watching the whole thing. Because it very accurately described the feeling of trying to regain your humanity after seeing the worst of it. The feeling of being unable to breathe because of the overwhelming feeling of guilt and shame and terror that comes when you finally feel safe enough to. I'm sitting at work crying because of the loss of empathy, the loss of humanity that this means for the world. I am so sorry.

I haven't seen the things you and your brother have, but I cried through every episode as well. I grew up totally detached from my feelings because of the circumstances I was in. Watching Violet Evergarden was exactly like watching myself struggle through years of trying to connect with myself again. The fact that one show could touch such incredibly different audiences speaks volumes.

This anime, thanks to Kyoani, made do that final step into true maturity. My well wishes are with all effected by this tragedy. When I was living with my mom for a summer I was jobless, hopeless, and depressed. My whole life was collapsing, my friends were miles away, and I drank and drank constantly to try and squeeze some joy out of waking up and doing anything. I had no future, no plan, and no want to be anything more than a miserable, depressed child. I watched Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid expecting it to be a dumb sleazy jerk-off festival that I'd just whack it to and then move on, and found myself taken by a cute, honest and genuine show about someone from another world struggling to find worth in humanity, and the family they were able to create. I'm not hesitant to say that it saved me from myself because of the honest, real joy I felt when I watched it. Thank you, KyoAni. Thank you so much.

Right now I'm living my dream by spending an exchange semester in Kyoto and already went to Uji just to see the building, were my favourite animes have been made. KyoAni has given me so much throughout my childhood, youth and my weird in-between-youth-and-adult-life. I'm still a weeb, but I'm so much closer now and when this happened, I was sitting in class. I had just finished my last exam and starting sobbing when I looked at the japanese news. To me this is so close and it felt so much more real than I can even tell. We talked about it in class and I think it hit everyone so hard, my professors were shocked and coming from a safe country into a very safe country made it even worse for me. I'm so sorry for all those, who have lost a family member, friend, coworker, rolemodel and just someone to admire. And with all my heart, all of these people will get better soon and not be pressured back into their everyday life. It's not much, but I sent over as much love as possible. Thank you Kyoto Animation.

Kyoani, how could I even begin to repay you. One of my few, and closest friends is alive because of the impact Clannad had on him. I was able to recognize and overcome both my depression and social anxiety because A Silent Voice touched me in a way that allowed me to seek help. There is nothing in this world I wouldn't throw away to retain the lessons and love that the works of your studio have brought into my life. I, truly, am happy in life, and it is because of your works, and the works that were inspired directly from your works. My heart aches in a way that is very familiar to me, accept this time it is not for myself, but for another. For the studio that gave me my light. For the creators whose imagination brought that light into existence. Nurtured it. Cared for it. And who may have lost their life in that blaze. My heart aches. From the very bottom of my aching heart, Kyoani, thank you. You're quite literally, the light in a sometimes very dark world.

I had insomnia and so even though this happened around 10 a.m. in Japan I was still awake here on the east coast of the US. I saw the first news reports when there was only three deaths announced. I was in shock more worried than angry and as the death toll grew my anger grew with it. it's rare for me to shed a tear as it takes something truly sad or profound to get that kind of reaction out of me. it's rare for me to be enraged as it takes something truly Wicked and unfair to provoke that emotion from me. that night I cried and was enraged wanting nothing more than 5 minutes alone with the one responsible. I've never wanted the ability to teleport and time travel so much. I just wanted to be standing at the door to give him a proper greeting when he walked up. sure I'd be in jail right now but the news would have read of only one fatality and that building and all those talented wonderful people would still be safe. I feel for the families friends coworkers and loved ones of the victims I'm not even that big of a fan of their work specifically I'm familiar with it but they're normal Fair doesn't suit my usual tastes in anime the only work of theirs I had seen prior to this was full Metal Panic but I've been watching a bunch more since this tragedy as it's the only way I can show support it's tragedies like this that remind you to hold your loved ones close and makes you realize how fragile life is and reminds you to celebrate it and hopefully prevent you from taking it for granted

I have to say, Geoff this might be your best video. I've had my disagreements with you, but I can tell this video was made from the heart. It is amazing how a medium like this can bring us all together. People from different walks of life. Some may call it cartoons, but for me anime is a beautiful art form that can very much enrich a person's life and tell important messages about the world, people and culture. Or just be fun. So thank you Geoff for making this video. In a time of dread, it is stuff like this that remind me why humanity can be amazing.

i dont think he synced it that bad. he was showing a scene of two characters hugging and having a little tender moment while saying 'anime has brought a lot of good into the world.' if he meant that to go with the line before, his editing must be pretty bad and i give him more credit than that. And doing that doesn't mean he wasn't serious about the topic but that he looked past the SAO hate to include it in a serious talk about the genre and community as a whole

What makes me so angry about the attack is that it happened to one of the studios that treated its employees better than most. It was the source of getting my feelings. I was obsessed with it and still not regret it, because it has saved my life. Like you, I'd be dead without anime. Little did I knew, anime followed and lead my way as a child already. I didn't know the concept of anime back then, but I have seen pokemon, digimon, dragonball, naruto and quite a few ghibli movies. The fact that it is an anime studio or not is not even the most important part. I've been brought to near tears, by both yours and Gigguk's videos on the topic. And this has caused a sort of conflict within me. When school shootings happen in the United States, I don't give it a thought. At the country festival in vegas, as terrible as it was, it didn't affect me. Even though they happened in my country. But when an animation studio, in a world away goes up in flames, and innocent lives of artists are lost in the process, I freeze and can't quite comprehend what occurred. I'm not saying that any one tragedy is necessarily worse than another, other than the obvious metric being number of lives lost/affected, but the conflict arises when I've become numb to tragedies happening closer to home, almost in my own back yard. I'm not sure what I'm trying to get out of posting this, but I'm curious if there are others going through the same thing as I am. Anime has been in my life since I was young, and my uncle was able to foster a deeper love of it in me, spending weekends binge watching VHS tapes he bought at the flea market of Outlaw Star, Flame of Recca, Cowboy Bebop and Ninja Scroll. And I think that's my explanation there. The biggest factor of my life, that's been with me since I can remember, can be taken away so easily. That these innocent people, who's lives were taken away doing the thing that they love doing, were so easily snuffed out. Maybe I'm not quite getting across what I want to say, but thank you Geoff for being able to put into words, what others like me may not be able too. Thank you anime community, and your ability to stand together and help support the staff, and studio in need. And thank you KyoAni, for your dedication to your employees, and passion of the art.

Given Kyoani's propensity telling down to earth and/or tragic tales, I think it would be beautiful if the survivors made animated works about their experiences or about those they lost. I would pay double the reasonable price for such a work if it went to help everyone involved

I feel like a cheesy person right now but I just had to put it out there. Also about Kyoto Animation, it made me really happy knowing that we raised above $2M in less than a week for Kyoto's loss. i've already cried about this many times. and now again i'm in tears. i too struggle with the desire to see this monster mutilated publicly and also too not giving into that emotion and feeding into that monster. this is one of the worst tragedies in my life. I was deadened to 9/11 as an american but I was young, and it hurt but it was some loss of life i didn't feel much of a connection with. It was a terrible tragedy but it was just like people dying of starvation, and lately the rise of school shootings again have deadened my emotions to them as they happen so often and I grew up hearing about columbine and such so the gravity never felt real. I've loved anime for the majority of my life and this studio has been incredibly important to me as i've grown up. I don't know if I could every fully explain my connection to anime and it's creators but this attack, this needless loss of life of those so ethereal and yet still so important to me, has felt devastating.

A year after the disaster that no one never expected to happen. Last year at this day, 39 highly talented and kind hearted people died after an arson attack. Further 34 were injured including the suspect. 39 people who made us laugh, cry, smile and excite, gave us something we needed in our most darkest hours, who we dont even know by name. Who created many gorgeous animes that even after a few years of being released are still being talked about. Animes that have changed our perspective in life or made us accept who we really are. Saying I'm sad or tremendously depressed after hearing the news is an understatement of what we all felt once we saw the news. We didn't even have thanked them for what they did to us. K'ON, Haruhi, Dragon Maid, and Lucky Star were all fascinating in their own right and as mentioned by everyone else could not have been pulled off without the care and engaged staff of a little animation studio in Kyoto. They've brought joy to millions the world over and did not deserve any of this but the community has responded with their love and support. Both your and Jack's videos use exactly one clip from Kanon: where Yuuichi, believing that Ayu is dead, goes to meet her (what he thinks is a ghost) at the site of the accident, refuses to forget her again, and inadvertently gives her hope that her body is still alive somewhere. Whether that's meant to symbolize that there's hope for the survivors, the industry, and the fans after this or it's just meant to evoke the emotion in the scene itself, it's a powerful choice.

Well said man. You moved me to tears, and as you talked I remembered my childhood. I was a neglected child, grew up in a broken family, developed depression rooting from childhood, it wasn't easy growing up. But it was anime who saved me. I was able to grow up into a decent adult because I modeled characters in this medium whom I assumed would have been a good parent or family if I did have one. I am 22 now and currently under training as a hospital staff bound to Japan. Ever since I was younger, if ever I'll be offering my 100% service I would want to offer it to the people who helped me develop who I am now. And that is the country where my love of Anime originated. Japan. It is sad that I cannot help for now. But I hope my lifetime service to their country would reach them one day.
