My Grandad and my Dad used the chest expander.. I’ve been using it off and on for 50yrs. What killed off the use of springs was the introduction of the bullworker in the very early 70s, kids always looking for the next best thing and what with all the hype and promises surrounding the bullworker it became the top seller. I’ve lifted weights for my entire adult life but the last 3yrs I’ve concentrated on calisthenics. I found I was losing width so I broke out the old chest expander and hey presto! In a short space of time my shoulders were back... I use just 4 exercises on just 2-3 strands x10reps to get blood in the shoulder girdle before working out. The best lateral raise is two hand, springs in front at the waist with a slight lean forward. Highly recommend the chest expander if you have any shoulder or elbow niggles, they just seem to disappear!! As for the name chest expander I think that just evolved during wartime. Before the 2nd world war it was strand pulling or cables. The guys enlisting in the Navy had too have a minimum 2” chest expansion to pass the medical. So to get in recommended by relatives, they would use the family cables! at the medical you’d deflate your chest, breathe in expanding the chest and flexing everything you had!! Easily passing the test... thank you Alex for promoting the expander.

This year, I had a shoulder injury that prohibited me from loading any kind of weight for any kind of overhead pressing. Lost a lot of my shoulder and trap gains. I implemented the chest expander, focusing on rear delt movements for sets of 12-15 hard reps, building up a cable as I got stronger. My injury cleared up in a month. It completely addressed the issue of my overdeveloped front delts which caused a lack of balance on the delt heads, leading to pain when overhead pressing. It's an absolute necessity for me now and has helped build more balanced delt formations. Highly recommended.

I hope to see spring training surge in popularity, I purchased a spring chest expander asap after watching your interview with Golden Era Bookworm and am very pleased with the results so far. I'm only doing single arm spring curls and spring pull-aparts right now (using 3 springs on a cheap amazon model) and have noticed gains in my biceps and upper back. I plan on buying 2 expanders from Robert's shop to take my spring training to the next level, the pictures you showed in this video gave me some ideas on new spring exercises I want to add in.

Just watched your video and enjoyed it a lot. I’m 65 Australian male and divorced now but when I was 12 I got a chest expander as a gift. I never forgot the feeling I got when I saw my body changing. I spent a lot of my teenage years at home apart from sport due to Asperger’s. I remember working out most nights especially during summer and I built a body I was proud of. Many years and injuries later I’ve been noticing my body slowing down and not feeling that good particularly in strength and endurance. I put this down to total lack of motivation and feeling I don’t have to go out looking good anymore cos really nobody is looking at me. I’m old! Recently I bought another 5 spring chest expander, took off 2 springs and started a short daily routine. I noticed a small change in muscle mass on my electronic scales. There’s a saying that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. I want to keep this small exercise regime up and hopefully awaken the motivation to go walking again soon. Thanks for the post mate 👍

The first thing I used for training was the chest expander when I was about eleven or twelve years old (I'm 51 now). For quarantine reasons I went back with them. But one thing leads to another and I had my first taste of resistance bands, mini bands to be more precise. I haven't set foot in a gym for over a year. For me the mini bands are much better than the long ones and it's pretty similar to the workout I would do with the chest expander, plus you can train your legs too.

The best thing that the expander did to me was improving the "mind muscle connection" with my long head. I don't how or why but I feel a tremendous contraction right there in every pushing exercise and it shows when I look in the mirror. I don't know why but it has something to do with the resistance curve of the expander: at the very end of the rom the long head is fighting for his life to extend that shoulder and you can really feel it if you lockout your elbows. It's kinda like when you feel your biceps working during a rings support hold, those exercises don't cause much hypertrophy but they improve the feeling of other movements.

My grandfather did some bodybuilding. Built his own gym with friends that had a hosepipe in the corner for a shower. Real spit and sawdust place is how he described it to me. He showed me some of his old black and white posing photos and he was absolutely jacked. Completely natural of course. When the war came he did a lot of boxing in the army but I don’t think he went back to bodybuilding after his service. Bodybuilding hasn’t really changed hugely. I mean the main difference is the use of steroids but the fundamentals of progressive overload were well understood back then and are still the foundation of everything today.

This honestly makes a lot of sense. Getting bigger by getting stronger is a good concept, but the application of it is more like "get stronger, through a full joint range of motion, with your muscles engaged throughout the movement". It's entirely possible to get stronger with barbells, dumbbells and weighted calisthenics and neglect the time under tension aspect It's impossible to get to Fred Rollon strength standards without having the muscles fully engaged and constantly straining, simply due to the nature of the expander and it's exercises
@AlexLeonidas2 жыл бұрын
The first time I used my expander, I understood right away how Fred Rollon was so jacked. The straining is on another level and for Fred to have been well above 7 springs on many exercises is still mind boggling to me. But it all makes sense.

Used to hook 2 expanders over a bar and sit on it (with a back rest is better), then hook the other ends over another bar and do perfect form military presses. Your thumbs hold the top handles in position. The movement feels so natural and you get an amazing shoulder pump. Also with a chain or bike lock attach 2 to a tree and do rows.

Saw a chest expander in our local thriftstore, definitely going back to see if it's still there after watching this video.

The chest expander focuses on the contracted position, which is good for strength and definition. Maybe not as good for size as lengthened partials, but… better for strength and definition and rounds out the benefits of lengthened partials. That’s why I LOVE the one I got!!!!!!

Holy shit, this would be great for external rotator pull-aparts with 1-3 springs to avoid the no linear resistance band tension you mentioned

It's my favorite way of hitting the external rotators, feels so good man

I have a set from the 1930s. Spenbys, made in England still in original box . Built to last forever and they still look like new! Used them today. Utterly murdered my delts and arms lol. I only train to absolute failure. Fantastic bit of kit
@romanmclean5425 Жыл бұрын
Great video Alex, after watching your video i remembered i had an old Spenby chest expander in a box somewhere, found it and it's like brand new, 5 springs and the best part is i got it at a Australian cash converter place for $5, $3 USA lol. I am 53 and do lots of band workouts and isometrics and was quite pleased with the workout i did with the chest expander .I was looking into the Robert Baraban chest expander on Reddit and some say after a year they have over stretched the springs and needed to be replaced, i would think his product would last at least 10 years.I measured my chest expander and it looks smaller in length than the handgripper one, if not to much trouble can you measure it just laying on a table or floor from outside handle to the other outside handle, my old one is 68cm or 26 3/4 inches, it just seems if any wider than that would take away some of the inside tension. Thanks.

I've always wanted to purchase one but I've only ever found older models from the 70s of plastic handles. I'll be picking one of these up immediately. Thank you so much for sharing.

Love using tjese movements with high resistance bands with knurled handles provided by Valhalla fitness..I usually superset with my pushups or dips during active rest...tires you out...no body can tell me that this is a useless device...it should be an essential...great video...saludos from Argentina...

Hey Alex I want you to know that I seen your video at the end of November and got an expander in December. A silicon one from Amazon. Best workout equipment I've ever owned. I increased my lifitng power by almost double in a week and my man titties have lifted. I've been weight training seriously for about a year and this is a gamechanger. I get a good workout and since the Siberian winds I've been inside away from my outside gym. This gave me more of a challenge than my weights ever did AND I'm starting formation on a 6 pack???????? Never do situps I neglect my core usually. I'm being as serious as possible I thank you for this workout equipment you sold me on. Best shit ever.
