After watching this film, we in our family hardly spoke for a day. Each thought about his own. A very difficult, but very necessary film. Hats off to the director and actors.

Good job on this one, "The best war-movie we only watch once." What sticks so hard with me is the look in Flyora's eyes as the historic image of baby-hitler on his mother's lap shows up. I can only interpret it as a realization of his own capacity for cruelty, his expression changing as it dawns on him. I rarely hear anyone else comment on it though, so I'm almost wondering if its my own projection. Any time I see any other war-movie now, no matter the circumstance, I have an image of that particular expression stuck in the back of my head...

No you are right in that analysis. Further, I would say it even shows how at that age, who could have known what he would become? None of us know the path before us when we're children. If we somehow, could know that someone will become evil incarnate, or even live a life of absolute misery, absent of hope and joy, what would be the right thing to do?

This film makes me wish that Klimov could have adapted Cormac McCarthy's novel Blood Meridian; as his style reminded me so much of McCarthy's prose.

Just think...20 years ago, almost no one in the west had seen this film. 10 years ago, almost no one had seen Soy Cuba. What other masterpieces are out there waiting to be discovered? And yet westerners would rather given their time and money to Space Jam 2, a fact which is even sadder than this film.
