I think oda made the right call having luffy lose again. luffy JUST learned how to use conquerors haki in his attacks. one does not just master it right away. plus, he's still not quite the emperor level yet, just like blackbeard said prior.

Kaido was just hallucinating in the last part of the fight and he only realized it when Luffy disappeared. Kaido got too excited in the 1V1 fight to the point that he thought Luffy got up and was still fighting him.

In case you don't know what happen, Kaido knock Luffy out of Onigashima for a while now but he so worked up in that moment that he thought Luffy still smiling and fighting him.

Luffy was fighting in base form and Kaido in hybrid form. You gonna hurt him BUT it wasn't enough Luffy still needs more power up, after all, plot armor is gonna save you at the end. Kaido is just built different, he fight almost everybody. From akazaya samurai, the worst generations teaming up, Zoro hurting Kaido and still take damage, Luffy gets a power up BUT it wasn't enough. AND also, he is holding up ONIGASHIMA If it's one on one, bet on Kaido 🤷‍♂️🤔

Luffy is not using gear 4 not because he doesn't wanna use it, it is because he can't, Kaido is a freaking monster not katakuri or doffy he knows if he use it it will not be enough to defeat kaido and then when he runs out of stamina he will die. That's why he used it once before cuz there were 4 other nakama backing him up after G4 runs of. And that's why when he comeback he will still use it and he will still lose so don't talk like luffy has a choice here he does not it's simple if he uses G4 he will lose unless there is some zoro, yamato or law protecting him
