Dear Black Friday - I found you 3 years ago and I absolutely adore your videos and find myself watching them over and over again. I am the 52 y.o. mother of 2 teenage daughters who most would consider 'goth', tho they would describe their aesthetic a bit differently today. I was a goth in the 80's (replete with art school attendee) and so i embrace and support their love of this lifestyle and self-adornment (make up, clothing and piercings). I totally understand the CONSTANT explanation of why and how they want to look and be as they are. Your admission of going through a recent growth where you are accepting yourself w/o makeup is really resonating with us. Thank you for sharing this. You are such a wonderful, open and honest human being...you are a jewel in this world. Thank you.

As a fellow redhead, I really get this. The whole “no makeup allowed” school- I had that too. And I also wore the forbidden products. Lol. Today, I avoid going out without at least mascara. That way, fewer people ask me if I’m sick or tired. “No, you just can’t see my lashes today.” Is how I’d like to respond.

I used to feel similarly, until I realized that I was who I was no matter how I looked. Right now I have sort of three looks; my heaviest makeup with tight lined eyes, mascara and lipstick (still much lighter makeup than what is typically considered "full face"", a natural makeup look where I use historical makeup products such as eye kohl and lip tints (I'm a cultural historian so bear with me) and then no makeup at all, like, maybe just a bit of lip balm when I leave the house. I grew to feel equally myself in all these looks and realized that I was equally admired and feared (my style is much more subtly gothic than hers, but gothic it is; I've been described as a witch trying to blend in as a muggle and given my user is my real name, well now...) in all these "forms". It's amazing and has done wonders for my confidence!

This is so great! I'm on a journey of face-acceptance myself, but it's so tough! I think I used make-up to disguise my vulnerability in the past - people being mean to you don't know they're getting to you if they can't see your face getting red and flustered under foundation. I still much prefer my face with make-up on, but it contradicts my general ethos so much! Still a ways to go. Things like this help. Thank you!

Lovely video! 😊 I used to have a bit of an unhealthy relationship with makeup and didn't want to go outside without it, though that was mostly because I have acne (not even particularly severe, but it's there) so I always wanted to at the very least have some concealer on my spots. Then when I started removing my eyebrows I would also be a bit self conscious about going outside with no eyebrows drawn on. Now I've stopped caring though, I've adopted a "screw it" attitude and while I still love doing makeup, I'm not going to bother with it if I'm just running to the store for like ten minutes to get milk. It's such a relief to not be bothered by it anymore, to not stress about quickly putting at least a bit of makeup on before having to go for just a quick errand or whatever.

I feel like in the past couple years, (female) gingers have become super elevated in public opinion. Loads of people are chasing that look. The whole bleached eyebrow and cottage core things may have had something to do with it. I've wished I'd been born a ginger the second I started reading Anne of Green Gables as a kid and then the Pippy Longstocking movie just pushed it into high gear. :) Female gingers in literature have always been independent thinkers and mischievous fun people. So great.

I can completely empathize with everything you said! Thank you for doing this video 🖤 I used to hate wearing makeup when I first had it put on me for dance performances, and then later I discovered makeup's power, so it became my mask. I would refuse to even answer the door without makeup. I also get an identity crisis without it but have also been working on accepting my naked face. I still have a difficult time dealing with my natural face, but you are beautiful both with and without makeup and have such a great personality! Thank you for inspiring me to keep working on embracing myself inside and out too 🖤🖤🖤

I share alot of the same views with you about makeup, that like fashion it can help show the real you. Lately though I have been wearing such minimal makeup just out of laziness and lack of effort, and its been helpful to reclaim the face that I kept hiding behind pounds of makeup. Though I still prefer to be all glammed up, I am far more comfortable in my own skin now than I was a year or so ago. You look gorgeous both in and Out of makeup and I love the video!

I'm not sure what ones you've tried, but NYX makes a really good one. I get redness on my cheeks as well and it woks amazingly. I'm also super pale. So pale, my cousin calls me "translucent" 😂 It blends really nicely & it's not too bright where it shows through your foundation

I love what makeup can do for us. I actually don't go out to clubs and the like anymore, so when I do makeup it really is just for myself and no longer for the scene (whom I was never trying to satisfy anyway). Your natural features are actually very beautiful and I'm glad you're beginning to see it.

@@emilycurtis4398 hmmm maybe her mom did say "thistles". It sounds like "piss holes" to me. But thistles aren't bad things at all! They're lovely! Still, Freya looks beautiful without makeup and I'm sure she did as a kid as well. Freya can wear makeup or not- her choice but its awful the things said to little girls that cause them problems when they grow up. Red hair and green eyes are beautiful. I never understood why people pick on it. then again people used to pick on my curly hair as a child... but my mother and father never said anything bad about my looks.

I've never worn makeup, but I go through a similar identity crisis when I don't wear black or when I've gone too long before redyeing my hair black and I have my natural hair coming through. It's so weird that I've only been doing it for 6 years (a third of my life) yet it's so integral to how I see myself and properly relate my mind to my body.

yeah every man i've been with has preferred the no makeup look, one guy even went as far as to get me into the shower to see 'the goods without face paint' lol. when it's genuine it's good but for most of them it's just code for 'i want your skin to be perfect and you to be as close to naturally beautiful as possible but without makeup ' - which is just another form of oppression by the beauty ideals. now mind you, i'm a bare faced bitch for most of the time - but i'm not doing it to please or scare anyone (most of the time it would be scare lol).

This is the most reliable video I have ever seen and could vibe with. I was just like that a few years back. I was told I was ugly at a very young age and from there, I could not leave the house with out a full face of makeup. Now that I'm a mum, I hardly have time to do my makeup every day. So I just do my eyebrows and that's it.

Fashion is another art form and you're so artistic! Your face without makeup is very pure and, don't take it the wrong way, but you look almost child-like. So really you have an extremely trans-formative palette to work with. The looks you create are all spell binding and hauntingly lovely. Love your videos!

I really love the commentary to this. It's all very true. Most days I will keep all the curtains drawn till I have makeup on and then some days I will spend all day making myself up and then get disgusted and wipe it all off and feel better. It's all very personal and psychological. You are lovely both ways and your dolled up face is always so impressive and shows what an artist you are and is definitely still you.

You truly are beautiful, without and with makeup. I relate strongly to the concept of makeup making you feel more like yourself. I can't stand to look at my own face without a bit of brown eyeshadow and some eyeliner at least (this is how everybody saw me 6-12th grade). It's an enhancement. It's not "hiding" or "lying", it's an expression of how we truly see ourselves. Makeup is a wonderfully magical thing.

I am so happy to hear that you're feeling comfortable enough to go out without make up. I used to not go out without make up, then it went to not going out without eyebrows (mine are so very light, it looks like I don't have any from afar and I feel like that makes my forehead look huge) but now I go out with nothing on and it feels so freeing, for me. But one positive I can say to having went through a period of never going out without it, is all of the practice I got. I do feel awesome about that. I totally understand what you mean by not feeling like yourself without it, going through an identity crisis, and wearing your soul on the outside. I feel the same way. And I agree with make up giving a certain confidence which helps you Express yourself better around people or in public, etc... I love this video and it was awesome to see a side by side. You're beautiful inside and out, make up or no make up. 🖤
